I had an overgrown bush in my yard when I bought the place. I had no idea what it was - but it was about 6ft of bush… so I trimmed it to a tree- almost as a joke.
It’s about 13ft after a few years- and now it’s turning out crab apples. I had no idea what it was until this year. Great surprise.
I think I’ve got a Whitney crab tree, it’s my favorite apple for fresh eating. It has an amazing rose floral taste when ripened well.
Here in Germany crab apples are not a big thing, and I always wondered what to do with them. So, thank you for the great video 🙏🏻
I guess we have different crabapple down here in the south. Ours were always green, a bit larger than a golf ball, never red or yellow, and you know they were ready when they were tart and no longer bitter. They were the greatest thing when you pickled them in salt brine and lasted all winter long. We lived on them as kids, and most of the neighbors had them in their yards or pastures. The deer loved eating them as well, but I haven't seen any in years now.

Fascinating video... Here in the uk there is a naturally occurring wild crab apple, a modest tree of the hedgerow with a small tart yellow apple. It good for cider, making apple jelly and for the birds and small mammals to eat. Thanks for your enthusiasm.
I have some of the wild fl. Native crabb apple trees.
They are little smaller than 1/2 a large egg. Very sour and bitter. And Brite green
My aunt said you could make them into jelly but you used about twice the sugger.
Found out yesterday that my University grows cherry crab apples, and they're great!

You can make your own pectin from crab apples for canning jams and jellies.
Dumb apple farmer talks 😂 thank you for that acronym. And thank you for this video. &HEYYO from New Hampshire. I’ve been getting into harvesting natural resources. Found a bunch of Siberian crabapples some ways behind a gas station in a rural area, nearby a brook. The brook runs behind my home and I followed it. And from following the brook you wouldn’t believe the number of different useful resources I found. Or maybe you would believe it. As a crazy wild woman I’ve also consumed some water from the brook and it’s just fine. There’s tiny fish in there. Some crawfish/crayfish and frogs all around. I’m lucky/blessed to live here. (Technically my dads property).
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Sharing this type of knowledge is important to pass on down to new generations. (my dads a retired mechanical engineer from Boston as far as he’s concerned all plants are weeds, he has no green-thumb and doesn’t care for one).
I think we all need some of this information now maybe more than ever. New Hampshire has an increasing homeless population. Our property taxes went up twice within the past 2 years. And before now there’s been no raise on property taxes for quite many years. I can’t remember the last time taxes went up. Now , it’s been increasing each year. Seems crazy!

Should come an try Newfoundland crab apples, could never find what they actually or or a video on them lol we have 2 kinds, one is a bright green and very sour and ones HUGE and a bit more sweet then sour, sweet enough that we ate them as kids lol but grow wild

This was not really everything I need to know about crabapples but I did learn a few things. Maybe the more accurate title should be the history of crabapples in U.S. or something like that. I got a few potted trees last year at Home Depot on clearance at end of season. What can anyone tell me about Harvest Gold? And what happens if you still have it in the pot a year later because you haven't had time to plant it yet? Also can you just repot it into a larger container instead of in ground? (at least for a few years)
Yes you can repot them. I was a merchandiser for cottage gardens at home depot. Consistent watering is key with pots.
No. You will eventually have to plant in the earth, and nothing it worse for a tree than transplant shock and root damage. It is best done when tree young.

Thank you. Dolgo? Is that the variety you had mentioned? How would you rate its resistance to disease? I live in central Arkansas and have high disease pressure. I've seen small dark red crab apple trees in the area that get no spraying and are healthy.

Hey if you venture around by taking some walks in your area you could find some growing wild. I found some Siberian crabapples growing a few yards near a gas station. Grab some to use and plant the seeds. 😊
It seems like Clark's Crab is the best eating and longest storing crabapple out there! ~2 inch diameter.
Apparently so far only available from 39th Parallel Nursery.
Candy crabapple also seems amazing.
Does crab apples taste good?
We have something that we did not plant and we are pretty sure it is a crabapple. But what kind we do not know. Is there a way for me to send a photo of the trunk and branch with many crabapples? The fruits are about 1 1/4”s in diameter. All the others we planted and their fruit is very small. Thank you! October 6, 2022
You can pay to have the tree DNA tested and the results compared against large databases to find the closest match. It's pretty cheap these days.
This is useful to know if you wanted to graft new varieties on to the existing rootstock if the apples aren't very tasty.

Actually I loved sour taste crab apples 🍎 but I couldn’t find it I want to grow a good crabapple tree so can eat I planned two crabapple trees but the fruit it doesn’t tasted good I don’t think is not the right one 🥲🤷♀️Now I had 5 crabs apples tree and 2 apples trees 🤦🏻 But no fruit what’s the heck 🤷♀️I gave up I’am too old for these crabs 😂for get it no more crabs apples for me🥲
