- Join historian and author Timothy H. Smith for a presentation on John L. Burns, one of the most famous civilian warriors in American history. On July 1, 1863, Burns left the shelter of his Gettysburg home and joined in the fighting west of town. Wounded and captured, he survived the battle to become a national celebrity. In the months that followed, he was visited by reporters and photographers; he received the personal thanks of Abraham Lincoln, and Congress passed a special act granting him a pension. As his tale spread across the land, some of its details became distorted, and today much of what happened is shrouded in myth and legend. Join us as Smith separates fact from fiction.

Loved this presentation.. I had a relative that was a Southern Officer and I always felt like in a past life I was there at Gettysburg fighting along side of him.

A fascinating part of the battle of Gettysburg, learned a number of facts about the Man.
Loved this presentation. My maiden name is Burns. Most of my family came from Virginia and my great-great grandfather's dad was from Ireland. I am wondering if I am related to this John Burns.
