I learned "Old Tar River" from Aaron Stevens of Monteagle, Tennessee. See Clarke Buehling and Mark Weems for other versions of the song. My instrument is an 1880s Fairbanks & Cole short-scale banjo tuned gCGBD.
"Old Tar River" (Old Tare River) is attributed to Joel Walker Sweeney, who's thought to have composed it by 1840. Frank Brower and Dan Emmett played it on stage in Lynchburg, Virginia, on July 4, 1841. Sweeney himself is documented performing it in New York City the following year. It first appears in print in THE COMPLETE BANJO PRECEPTOR by Elias Howe (1851).

Hey Clifton, love the rendition of this classic song! I’m also a Patreon member and just wanna put it out there that I’ve learned so much since subscribing to your Patreon and had a lot of fun while learning from your lessons. I wanted to ask you, any chance there may be a future lesson on black jack Davy or Raleigh and spencer? They are 2 songs that I really enjoy and would be interested in learning if possible. Great material as always Clifton and thanks again
Thanks for writing, Anthony. I will definitely do "Black Jack Davy" and "Raleigh & Spencer" soon.
Thanks a million Clifton I really appreciate it, keep up the good work my friend!
Like the sweater man .... Own 3 of them, beat the tar out of em' and they wear like iron. Thanks for the lesson.
I like that you slapped yourself
There's something about both this one and the boatmans dance that have got them stuck in my head since hearing them. I think it's mostly the fun and light hearted feeling of them. These types of songs also seem to be some of the easiest for me to both learn and retain
All those old minstrel tunes are like that I find. Catchy, memorable melodies.
@CliftonHicksbanjo
Recently I saw an odd instrument, it was pretty much a guitar body with a 5-string banjo neck, i.e. banjo on top, guitar on bottom. It was from a picture of various old mountain instruments like dulcimers, Pickin' sticks, Cigar Box Guitars, Mandolas, Diddly bows, and an octagonal wood-top banjo.
I have one of these, the one i have is called a “Ban-tar” and this one was made in toronto canada in the 70s by an old shop “Dean Banjo and Mandolin”
@@chrismlastname it was a collection of 1800's era instruments
Gotta say, I’m loving the frequency of these lessons. Currently on a long deployment and thankfully I have my banjo with me. All the down time is helping me get more comfortable with some of the more advanced techniques and even gives me time to try and teach a buddy of mine how to play like you do. Thanks for all the hard work putting out this great content
That double drop-thumb might seem a little gimmicky but after learning this song it's made my playing better because I've been finding all sorts of other songs to throw it in as some variation. Sounds good in most songs with a first string melody run.
Such a great little banjo
I love how happy this old tune makes me thanks Clif you're the man! See you on Discord brother.
I bought a Buckbee "Tremont #98" banjo 50 years ago at Elderly instruments. I messed around with it, had no idea what I was doing, and it sat in various closets all this time. I was thinking of selling it at an upcoming antique show, and I found your videos. I've cleaned it up, ordered new strings, and even got a book written about this same model of banjo. Your videos have given me a renewed interest in it!
The 'Howard Green' jumper brings back memories!
Rocking the Wooly-Pully and a hell of a song for it! Great work, Mr. Hicks!
Great video lesson Clifton. Beautiful little banjo also🎉 thanks
Very cool, Clifton
Great little tune Clifton (:
awesome. i am new to clawhammer. if you are not good enough yet to do drop thumb, can you use another option? double thumbing? love the tune! will add that to my learning list!
Yes! Try doing a pull-off with your left hand instead. But don't give up on drop-thumbing, either. Keep trying!
Very pretty, makes me feel young.
Hi Clifton. Couldn’t this be played in standard gDGBD tuning? Is there an advantage aside from the 2 finger C?
Yes, it could be played in many tunings. Both gDGBD and gCGBD have their advantages/disadvantages.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Hey clifton Im having a hard time figuring out what the drop tune for this tuning is.
@@malcolmraynal9336 Try dGDF#A
@@CliftonHicksbanjo I cant get any tunings to sound right I think my banjo needs some working on
Do you keep your picking nail longer than the other? I'm trying to learn claw but I can never seem to get a clear note. Do I just need to work on my precision?
I keep all of my fingernails very short.
Where did you get that sweater?
State municipal surplus.
