I love Billy Cobham when it comes to drums that’s why I clicked on this thumbnail. There has to be some love to Jerry Goodman because he’s a fiddle playing maniac lol. The original lineup was my favorite.

@@TheJudgeofLevelstm I also saw the two together, in May 1975, when M.O. opened for Jeff Beck in CT, but this was not the original M.O. lineup, it was the group with Narada Michael Walden on drums. Jean-Luc Ponty had already left the band, even though he was featured on their latest album at the time, 1975's "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond". Still a great show, but I am partial to the original band with BC...

Man I thought that this song was incredibly fast on the inner flame, but Billy is playing it even faster live. He speed and ability is superhuman.

Same here, Bill. Saw the original version of the Ork 5 times between Sept 1972 and Dec 1973's final tour. All concerts I saw were in CT or MA. Nothing else like them, their power & musical telepathy was uncanny. BC is the greatest drummer I've ever seen live to this day. I've seen him in person an additional 3 times, post-Mahavishnu, closeup at club shows. He was literally astounding every time. 🥁 🔥

I wonder how many musicians could be able to perform this holy crap live: The Mahavishnu Orch was a revelation when I was a youngster, amazing Cobham even though my fav drummer is Joe Morello.

I loved this stuff in ‘72 and ‘73. Not sure what I think about it now.
Looking back on early live footage, it seemed to some extent, Billy and Jerry’s band, more than John’s.

Unlike other band leaders, Mclaughlin always WANTS his musicians to overplay as much as possible. Just ask Dennis. No instructions just go for it! There is a cool short clip of Billy and Mclaughlin on a red strat just jamming like kids in the garage with no band yet (Montreux). Would love a DVD of that show.
