    I just bought an XLT with sport appearance package, technology package and towing package. I was in the market for a Tacoma, and I did quite an extensive test drive with the Tacoma V6. but in my opinion, this XLT is far superior in the drivetrain. With incentives, it was less expensive than the Tacoma. I traded in my 2014 Ram 1500 which I had since it was new. I hated the Ram since day two...The XLT Ranger is so far my favorite vehicle I ever owned, fits in the garage, has all the safety and comfort options and the ecoboost with 10 speed is excellent. 25MPG, goes better than my 5.7 Hemi that I traded and far better than the two Toyota pickup trucks that I had in the past.

    ford just announced the ranger's 1st recall due to a shifter problem on the transmission. It's hard to take Tacoma's crown like that

    • @HiPlains1
      @HiPlains1 5 лет назад +4

      I was wondering when the transmission would have issues. The 10 speed is having issues in other full size that gm/ford offer. The 10 speed being co developed of course. But I would not brag up the taco trans. That is one pile of crap. Its a gear searching, hard shifting, gutless gas guzzler. 0 to 60 in 10 seconds wow. And the damn thing likes to early shift to try to increase mpgeeeee which keeps you out of the torque band. Junk transmission. The only decent motor left is Nissan's VQ 4.0 V6 double overhead cam with the great 5 speed auto. Nissan Pro 4X is best 4WD and that motor runs forever and always gives you the torque when you need it. None of that adaptive learning computerized transmission BS. Only reason taco sells well and high resale is huge brand loyalty. That in itself does not mean its transmission is any good. Its not. Not even remotely so. Test drove it twice and I was like WTF. Why are people paying top dollar for this crap? The real sleeper in the bunch is a fully loaded Nissan Pro 4X that can be had for around 34K.

    As a past owner of 2 Tacoma’s, a 2002 and a 2015, now I own a 2017 F150 STX Crew 4wd and honestly I ain’t looked back. Tacomas rust like crazy are very uncomfortable to drive, loved my 2002, but never liked even a little bit 2015 model. Maybe because the color was white, but the 4.0 felt way under powered and the seats and the low seating position would hurt you. Mechanically the trucks were flawless, but rust no matter how clean you kept them rust appeared everywhere underneath. Scale of 1-10 I rate my 2002 Tacoma 2.7 4WD access cab a 7, my 2015 4.0 4WD Crew a 4, both we’re manuals. Maybe it’s where I got old, but there’s nothing like a full size truck, I hope the new Ranger is a great truck, I still see a ton of the old Rangers on the roads around here.

      Consumer reports gave the Tacoma 1 out of 5 reliability score for, and I quote "included issues with wind noise, squeak or rattles in the door panels, slipping transmissions, and other nuisances." Wow, I didn't know rattles and squeaks made a vehicle unreliable. The only actual transmission problem was with the algorithm that controlled how the transmission shifted, a flash corrected that problem. I have personally experienced this, that was Toyota's poor attempt at trying to make the truck more fuel efficient. Consumer reports can't give actual good data on these so called reliability issues, then I call bullshit. Those trucks are still going to last longer than anything else and will retain their value for that reason I absolutely guarantee it.

    Really I think each major make in this segment will be reliable with proper care and of course picking the right one, get it checked out even if it's new, every makes manufacturers lemons. I've driven new vehicles that one model was poor but a different one same model was noticeably better so you can't just shoot in the dark thinking it's all the same, different options, build date, etc does make a difference, ask anyone who owns several of the same model vehicle, I own several F150 work trucks and out of 12 4 are prone to warranty/fix time, same configuration as most of the ones except 3 which are a different trim, motor etc. The v8 XLT premium is by far the most reliable out of the bunch.

    I got mine mid January. very disappointed. does yours shimmy at take off? around 1600-1700 rpm mine has a vibration, shake, something. seems to go away when you pass 2000 rpm. sounds like an old VW bug engine lol. when i test drove it the brakes had a bad shimmy too. i figured it was a bad rotor or two, and they turned them. Most of the brake shimmy gone now, but I was left feeling this take off vibration. they cant feel it, but everybody that has drove with me can. Then there is the back seat backrest, wont latch in the upright position. they removed a rubber bumper (the fix), still wont latch and when you take off, or apply the brakes it vibrates back there lol. Front USB ports don't work, they light up pretty, but they do nothing else. I don't know if the back ones work or not, haven't tried them. Oh, then there is the wonderful shift lever, mine seems to be ok, but i make sure and check it every time i park.

    35K dollars. Ok. Let me tell you what I just bought today for that exact same amount. A Nissan Pro 4X with 4.0 VQ double overhead cam with 5 speed, 4X4, 31" all terrain off road tires, leather, 10 speaker stereo with sub, 8 way power seats, dana locker, bilstein shocks, hillside descend, sunroof and it built like a tank. Very nice feel to the steering and not the mushy crap like the ford were you bounce around side to side. The Nissan reminds me of real quality. Really planted. A serious offroader for sure. And a drivetrain that is proven to run 300K miles if you take care of it. Ford's price points are the higher extremes and the frontier Pro 4X is on the polar opposite. When you drive/view these two side by side which I did last week you will know that the Ford is a complete total rip off. The nissan is the real deal. But only the Pro 4X. Nissan did something special with that one.

      HiPlains So you went from being high on the Ranger to then high on the Colorado to now the Frontier Pro-4x. Taking pot shots at every other truck except the one you were liking at the time...... Interesting.
      2 weeks ago you claimed to have bought the Colorado when you couldn't get the Ford dealer to give in on the price. Not surprised as the truck is so new and with so few around it will be a while before the killer deals come around.
      So what happened to your Colorado? Trade it in for the Pro 4X?
      Whatever....
      I'll agree with you on the Frontier Pro 4X. It's a solid, very comfortable truck and it priced right no doubt due to that Nissan didn't retool the factory line for 10 plus years. I was very strongly interested in the Pro-4x and right now you can score a certified used 2018 with 10K miles for 25 to 27K with a 10 year 100,000K warranty. There is a ton of them for sale on Car Gurus and Auto Trader for that price.

      @@dannylynch4512 basically the ranger just came in too expensive for what it is and it's a good truck but first year model the Colorado actually I had ordered one and backed out once I found out about all the problems with the 8-speed and the shuttering and torque converter failures and class action lawsuits what not after finding that out I bailed out pretty much went with the frontier because it's basically reliable and tried and true. in short I really didn't trust these new advanced learning transmissions with the computers. Now that I got the pro-4x at home I actually like it a lot and prefer the handling ride and build. The vq engine is bullet proof. by the way the ranger 10-speed is already having issues with some of the Ford gm full-size. Also a recall on the Ranger transmission but nothing serious as of yet. Really like the Colorado and thought GM was starting to turn things around. However all turned out well. I really happy what I ended up with. Got my leather, 4x4 dana locker 10 speaker stereo with sub, bilsteins. They even put a lifetime spray liner in there. Has a better ride then the Ranger. More planted. Hard to explain but its firm but at the same time absorbs the shocks. Went over a speed bump and barely felt it. Its basically a modded out truck from the factory. But in the end, it came down to the drivetrain. Bullet proof engine and trans will run 300K if you take proper care. Plus I got them to throw in a 100K 10 year warranty bumper to bumper with no deductibles for an extra 1500. Out the door tax/tilte was just about 38K. I paid under 35K and I think the sticker was 37500. So I did pretty good and also have peace of mind since I will be retiring in about 7 years and will most likely still have this truck knock on wood.
      So yeah I had ordered a colorado a few weeks back. That is true. But I have my reasons for changing my mind. GM has had issues with the damn transmission from the get go. The 6 speed was crap and then they went to the 8 speed and problems got worse. GM even has had to buy back a fair amount of them for lemon law. Even my GM at dealer told me that about 20 percent will develop the problem early on. This all after I pre ordered. It was one to be build and thank god I did not buy one off the lot. So much happier with what I ended up getting. Hope you find what you are looking for as well. I would definitely suggest test driving a pro 4X before you make your decision.

    A fair review sir, and I thank you for that. I needed a mid size truck, not a luxury hauler. The XL w/ the STX package, in the Supercab 2 wheel drive set up, along with a few options (Ford 360, sliding rear window, carpet, spray in liner) hit right in my wheel house. The main thing that drew me to the XL/STX was the ability to delete the rear seats, which TBH are worthless unless you're a 5 year old. I needed some storage space to keep things safe, and dry. With a MSRP at 28,980 I don't think I could have gotten the same in a Taco at that price point. The truck is set to be built 11/18/20, and I'm quite sure it will serve me well.

As an everyday consumer vehicle, I think Tacoma will stay at the top at least for the first year, but as Ford works out the kinks of a new release vehicle, I am pretty sure it will start gaining on the Tacoma. Toyota made a good shot with the Tacoma because the Ranger had leave the scene! But now that is back Ford will give headache to Toyota. Toyota is not a truck company. And already Ford has more demand than anticipated. And the Tacoma is not the best in reliability in the CR. It’s look look like your mind was already made up before you review it! And by the way there’s a lot of journalists and reviewers (with more experience than you have) that are convinced that the Ranger will regain it’s place.
    This is a part of the review of the recent Motor Trend magazine about the Tacoma «The Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling midsize pickup in the country, but from behind the wheel, it's hard to figure out why. "Toyota wins all the style points," features editor Scott Evans said. "Thank goodness for that because it has a lot of offsetting to do." It's hard to pinpoint just one flaw with the Tacoma because there are so many.

    The Tacoma's biggest asset is one the Ford ranger never had, resale. Rangers are a cheap truck, or at least they used to be. On average Rangers never lasted like Tacomas. That is a pure, undeniable truth which is easily provable. I'm not a fanboy for any brand, but facts are facts.

    • @grocerygoat06
      @grocerygoat06 Год назад +1

      Really? I still see Rangers from the mid-nineties on the road. Interesting, I don't see many Tacomas from that time on the road. It could be from the rusted frames that Tacomas were known for. That is an undeniable fact!

    Bought my Ranger STX w/ tow package. Seems to have a little more than the STX above w/ towing package such as power mirrors, cruise control, carpeting, tonneau cover, and rear window that is manually opended and some kind of emergency stop alert (red flashing led lights on top of driver side dash). It also came w/ Sync and Ford Pass. I did have the bed painted by a truck specialty company which was cheaper - $300 vs $700 by the dealer. It is replacing my 2001 Ranger base model w/ standard transmission which I love. It had 217K miles but is running like a champ with no issues - sold last week for 3K as I did not like the $700 trade in value from the dealer. Having said that, I love the new Ranger. I bought it for $29k with TTL. My wife owns a 2015 Tacoma which she loves. But there is no comparison between the 2. The new Ranger outperforms the Tacoma in every way. Heck, even my 2001 Ranger did the same. LOL
