Only thing is, in the description, these kids are referred to as "greasers," but here in San Francisco, that term wasn't used, and for that matter, the specifics of the San Francisco gang subcultures of the late 1950s were distinct from the actual "greasers" of 1950s/60s Chicago. Here, there were "barts," who favored the Ben Davis trousers, pachucos (left over from the previous decades), "muns" (who wore all black), and "white shoes," who dressed in the "Ive League" clean-cut fashion, but were a teen gang culture. Robert Arthur Ranson, the 19-year-old gang leader who shot Andrew Ulibari and Norman Bothello in a gang conflict outside of the San Francisco Civic Center after the Annual Butcher's Ball dance in 1952 was a "white shoe," and that subculture is briefly mentioned in this opening, when the young narrator mentions "the shoes" (he wasn't referring to footwear, but to boys who belonged to that subculture.)
