It is not the Soviet Union or indeed any other big Powers who need the United Nations for their protection. It is all the others. In this sense, the Organization is first of all their Organization and I deeply believe in the wisdom with which they will be able to use it and guide it. I shall remain in my post during the term of my office as a servant of the Organization in the interests of all those other nations, as long as they wish me to do so. In this context the representative of the Soviet Union spoke of courage. It is very easy to resign; it is not so easy to stay on. It is very easy to bow to the wish of a big power. It is another matter to resist. As is well known to all Members of this Assembly, I have done so before on many occasions and in many directions. If it is the wish of those nations who see in the Organization their best protection in the present world, I shall now do so again.
Powerful stuff. Yet one more point of ignorance in my life: until this morning, I had not heard of one Dag Hammarskjold. With time, I am sure that I will learn more about him. Thank-you for this upload.
I know this is comment was made long ago. But if you're still interested you should look at the new trailer for "Hammarskjöld" here on RUclips. The movie releases on Christmas day and looks promising.
Thank you for posting these videos. I'm doing a project for National History Day about Hammarskjold and the research I've been doing about him is fascinating. I've come to respect him as a wonderful man despite all the challenges he had to face in the time of the Cold War.
It is a honour to see this great man in his time and we owe a debt to all of those like him, all honourable people like this wise man who did his best to make better world and save the Katanga region Congo. He was a religious decent man who believed the good in people (and even small countries rights) and he stood for his beliefs untill death. The Soviet did everything to get rid of him just like the General Secretary before him MR Trygve Lie and actually succeeded and so thought he would give up so easily. The Russians accused Trygve Lie (his Norwegian predecessor) of being a pro American and eventually made him to resign, but Hammarsköljd stood up and did not give up.
And the USA too, because they didn't liked Hammarskjöld send UN soldiers to reunite the Kongo. The CIA helped to split Kongo because Katanga was the main supplier for uranium to the USA and after liberty they didn't want the Sowjet Union to make the business. Lumumbas killing was supported by the CIA too. Book recommendation: "The Devil's Chessboard" by David Talbot
Stop spreading one way propaganda, the western powers wanted him out also more than the russians. He was interferring with big buissnesses mainly mine companies that was owned by rich families.
It wasn't Russia. It was the entire west that consulted against him. He was murdered because he wanted Africa to govern itself without the interference of the West. The west had interest in Africa's resources so they sent a British/Belgian mercenary to shoot down his plane. He was assainated by the West, not Russia.
Thanks for posting all these. I always took an interest in Mr Hammarskjold as I grew up during the Cold War era & it was quite obvious he was a real peace maker. I was only 7 at the time of the crash but remember the TV news flashes.
Robert Sambello A few years ago when I started reading more in depth about the CIA, I am now believing that too. They are definitely America's assassination squad among other things.
Robert Sambello Millions do indeed live a long sheltered life without much of any encounters with the government except maybe yearly visits to their local DMV, so yes they believe that. I've been blessed in that I only had one encounter, an overzealous prosecutor in traffic court, 30 years ago who thought I'd buckle in and plead guilty and pay a then-hefty $343 fine but I refused to back down and that was the end of it (my friend's car was uninsured, but I hadn't a clue until I got pulled over for a tail light out) That and a disagreement with the state revenue dept, but again I didn't back down, end of that.
"Goodness is something so simple: to always be there for others, never to seek yourself."

Best general secretary of UN ever
Russians says about such men:
"Yea, were there men when I was young,
Bold tribe of whom shall songs be sung..."

+Robert Sambello Yes they do.
Dag Hammarskjold is like Sissi in the Palais des Nations in Geneva. He is always present.
A real marathon for peace.
A Heroe and a Saint
I appreciate leadership.
Dag: I shall remain in my post.
Censored: Wanna bet?
😢😢😢😢😢😢
He was just a plane down to earth guy.
D'Ascoyne You’re just plane mean.
Question! Was pun intended?
