Maneuvering Trick to Manage the Backing Speed

Maneuvering a sailing boat under power is not the easiest task for all the sailors, amateurs or professionals and That's one of the few Techniques I teach my class so they can take advantage of every possible tool they can use for their maneuvers.

in my skipper-training they always told us to be very very careful with the rudder when backing up and never let go of the steering wheel. because it might snap to one side. is there more useful tipps to going backwards? i see too many people going forward in marinas when they shouldn't. especially the tighter ones we have in north europe.

what is the benefit steering from side to side compared to giving a forward thrust from the engine?

You need to use the speed for Repositioning the boat higher to the wind, not to waste it with forward

No, if you dont let it Crash to each side
