    The problem I'm having right now is putting the rear suspension hack together.

    I had one back in the 1980s. Put a tilt fiberglass front end in mine so it no longer had a usable glove box. Still had the glove box door so I riveted piece of 1/16 inch thick rubber over the opening on the firewall/ trunk side to keep the wind out. But discovered I could bungie strap a slab case of beer on top of the gas tank, and the passenger could reach through the glove box to get us beer. 👍
    One if the big mistakes I made was to go with solid motor mounts. The bug body amplified every single noise transfered through the mounts.

    • @69bajaoutdoors
      @69bajaoutdoors  Год назад +1

      Thank you for commenting. My hood was a tilt hood. But, with the winch in they way, I had to abandon that idea. I had plans to make a lift frame, as in it would lift up and arc forward. I got impatient and just screwed it down utilizing riv-nuts. Not sure why you couldn’t have a glove box. I have an operating glove box now and when it was a tilt hood.
      As far as motor mounts, I agree that all the noises are amplified through the body with solid mounts. It is quite loud when the rpm’s are up. Now I know why race cars have communication systems.

      @@69bajaoutdoors If I recall correctly the glove box insert was cardboard and I think was accidently tossed out when cleaning up the shop one day. I know we couldn't find it.
      Had a lot of fun in my baja bug back then. For winter driving Id use 2 pieces of flexible dryer duct that ran from the heat exchange boxes to inbetween the front seats.
      I also remember because I had a cage on the back it made it really easy to pull the engine. I think it'd take around 20 minutes to get the engine out. My engine was a 1600 vw bumped up to 1800cc with a 2 barrel weber carb.

    Brotha?! If I might suggest another way of securing that drivers left corner where you said you(3:35) might weld a plate or whatever to the heavy shock mount/tube frame and body
    How about if you take a slice off a 90 degree channel about 1-2” long and put it so one side grabs the frame(flat stock part of shock mount) and the original inner fender or body so it’s able to bolt to the body on one end and weld it to the frame so you could unbolt it and take off the Whole body pan if need be? I see your very skilled in building this bug and I’ve only made it that far like so far but is only a suggestion bc my older bro is about your age and he’s built a couple Chenowith big tube frames ones long ago and mom had a brand new 74 Gaia she bought when I was a boy and I rode home with her that year in it so I’ve got lots of history in VW Air cooled Vehicles and I’ll subscribe to your Chan bro but nice work on that car I loved it😁👍

    Nice run - just enough to get it a little dirty and (as you found out) discover odd sounds and an occasional nut that needs tightening.
    About those rear shock mounts: I really think you're going to have to punch through the body near the top eyelets and put a cross- brace in. There is just too much vertical force that gets translated to lateral force at the top of the shocks for what you have now.
    My cage is 1.75x0.120 DOM with cross- bracing at the shock mounts and I know I still get a little flex. (and I don't even drive that hard)
    Just something to think about...

    • @69bajaoutdoors
      @69bajaoutdoors  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the comment. I had originally planned to go with a full roll cage to tie into. In order to do that properly, I would have had to pull the body from the pan. My heater channels and front hump on the pan are solid but the threaded weld nuts are questionable as I was afraid it would open up another can of worms. I replaced the rear quarter pans so I didn’t have to remove the pan bolts. But I believe you are correct. I will need to put some sort of cross brace between the shock towers if I plan to keep the same setup. At this point, I may just join the bandwagon and install a rear roll cage and go through the fender wells with the shocks and make a true rear long travel suspension. I have 10.5” of travel at the moment.

    • @mtnduck3674
      @mtnduck3674 Год назад +1

      @69 Baja Outdoors 10.5" is a good amount and might be adequate for your use. I like your setup. I'm just suggesting a 1" or 1.5" hole and cross-brace tower to tower. If you bend and gusset, I bet you could get one to follow the back wall of your package tray. But if you start thinking about shocks through body, then you are starting to consider 4"+ holes and that gets to be a big weather issue, especially in areas more cold and wet. I would start by cross bracing what you have and bomb it till ya break it, then go bigger if you have to.

    • @69bajaoutdoors
      @69bajaoutdoors  Год назад

      Understood. I know I need to do something or it will end badly. I will look into doing a crossbar to start with. Thank you!

      They work great if you invest in quality products. LED turn signals require a resistor or an LED compatible flasher relay so they don’t hyper-flash. My headlights were inexpensive so low beam seems like it has no upper cut off. Meaning they just send light all over so I have them pointed lower as to not blind oncoming traffic. My high beams work great.
