    Forget about the 6 chips, on individual accolades only he stands alone. The fact that he won 10 scoring titles, while being THE elite defender at the guard position is preposterous! The mental toughness it takes to be the best offensive player on earth, while shutting down the opposing team is something that one has to be born with, it's not something that you can just develop into.

    Great Video and breakdown! I grew up in St. Louis but loved basketball. I grew a liking to the NY Knicks. They were the new Pistons but heavy underdogs. I despised Jordan....absolutely despised him. Because in the end I knew at that time, nobody could beat him. He would always find a way to win. When he left, I missed watching him play because I knew I'd never see anything like him again. I was pretty confident in that. He was an artist in the air and could slow down time. He was also the most competitive individual on the planet. A nasty combination. Bar none IMO, the GOAT. But the closest was Kobe. He had the same vibe. Lebron is extremely talented, but he just doesn't have "it". Anyone growing up watching MJ play or Kobe for that matter know what I'm talking about.

      When it comes to GOAT conversations, they’re incredibly difficult to have because people have different criteria for prerequisites that should be attributed to the conversation. If it’s based on championships alone, Wilt should be to GOAT. However, after this, people start talking about other prerequisites that may be a bit more difficult to measure (change of culture, attraction to the sport, rules made in defense against the athlete example: Jordan Rules (Brady rule) etc). I can’t speak on behalf of Wilt because I haven’t seen enough content TBH to know the athlete personally, due to environmental factors (lack of internet, etc), but what I’ve come across to learn - is the work ethic as illustrated in Tim Grover’s book: Relentless. Also, Tim Grover was the personal trainer of both MJ and Kobe. He (Tim), was the reason why MJ put on 10 pounds of muscle to get past the Pistons and also why he was able to increase his vertical jump height from 33 to 43 inches. Not disagreeing with you as I honor your comment, I only wanted to interject a comment and some information to share. Take care my friend!

    And another thing: Phil Jackson and the role of the coach and the relationship of the player. The points made here are spot on that a player has to accept a coaches input and put in the work. We have countless examples of players, in all sports, who shrug off coach input and don’t ever take that next step to being one of the best of all time even though they had all the talent and physical attributes to do it, yet lacked the quality in between the ears to check your ego and LISTEN to what a teacher has to say. Look at Allen Iverson…could have been part of this video series. As a 76ers fan, I saw it first hand. Guy had the talent, the heart, and the physical attributes to do whatever he wanted. Just didn’t have enough of that final piece - even he admits this now.

    This is a great clip! Thanks for staying, “there’s more than one way to be a leader!” That’s incredibly insightful! It sparks an incredible debate as well because in today’s age, the conversation surrounds doing things you enjoy doing. However, should the same standard be applied to sports? Because in sports, athletes can be cut or traded in an instance. Furthermore, if you don’t enjoy playing in sports because of your environment, is it one’s responsibility to improve knowing the environment that athletes are in? Lastly, if you’re in an environment like this, would an individual become better if they were never exposed to this reality? Similar to the, “Patriot Way.” That too is also debatable. It’s fascinating!
    Regardless, for all the negativity that surrounds this, I still inherently think that the responsibility comes down to the individual, “what are you willing to do to achieve your goals?” It’s a fundamental question that creates so much intrigue! Thanks for your post!

    You said you're looking for things that nobody talks about. Ok, here's some that not many usually ever mention:
    1. MJ only played with 1 all-star teammate (meaning, was an all-star while a teammate of MJ's, not before or after playing with MJ) during his entire career: Pippen, who was an all-star for only 6 of the 10 years they played together - and that includes 1994-95 when MJ came back from retirement and only played the last 20% of the reg season (17 games). That's among the least amount of all-star help that any superstar has ever played with over an entire career.
    2. MJ never missed the playoffs until he was a 39-40 yr old on terrible Wizards teams, when he came back for 2 seasons, 4 years after his Bulls retirement, and he also dealt with a torn meniscus for more than one-third of his 1st season back.
    3. MJ was upset only once in his playoff career (LeBron has been upset 4 times), when the Bulls actually shouldn't have been favored and were technically the underdog: the 1995 playoffs 2nd round as the #5 seed vs the #1 seed Magic with Shaq & Penny, who won 10 more reg season games than the Bulls. MJ had just come back from retirement and was rusty and also not in basketball shape after almost 2 seasons away.
    4. MJ doesn't just have the highest ever career reg season & playoff scoring averages, he has the highest career reg season & playoff PER as well. The video mentions some of this, including the highest BPM ever.
    5. MJ is one of only 5 guards ever to win NBA defensive player of the year.
    6. MJ is 3rd all-time in assists/game for shooting guards who never spent a full season or more playing point (just behind Pistol Pete and Clyde the Glide), and is 2nd all-time in blocks/game among all guards (barely behind D Wade).
    7. MJ won his 5 MVPs in 13 seasons with the Bulls, which we can say was 11 full seasons because he only played 18 reg season games in his 2nd season because of the broken foot and only played 17 games when he came back from baseball. Also, in his rookie year, MJ still managed to finish an impressive 6th in MVP voting. Then in the other 5 seasons, MJ finished 2nd to Magic twice, 2nd to Malone once, 3rd to Magic and Barkley once, and 3rd to Barkley and Hakeem once - and there's actually a good argument to be made that MJ was robbed of 3 MVPs, with more dominant numbers across the board than Magic (twice) and Malone.
    8. MJ's only possible weakness is his 3 pt shooting, which at 32.7% was right around the NBA average during his era. BUT, MJ did not grow up with a 3 pt line and didn't get to practice on one until he reached the NBA! (note: the ACC had a wacky experiment with a joke of a 17 ft 3 pt line for MJ's sophomore season in college, doesn't really count) Colleges didn't adopt it nationally until 3 yrs after MJ left, and high schools adopted it the year after that. That in addition to the lack of emphasis on the 3 back then, compared to the huge emphasis on it in the modern game are the main reasons for the disparities in 3 pt shooting. Imagine if MJ had been able to practice his 3s since he was young, like all players since Kobe's era and after have been able to - that, plus MJ's legendary work ethic mean that MJ probably would've been a good 3 pt shooter, since he already had one of the best mid-range jumpers ever.
    9. MJ has some moves that STILL have never been able to be duplicated since 40 yrs ago when he started showing them off in college: his double-clutches and ball fakes where he combines his ridiculous hangtime and palming the ball, both of which very few could ever do either. MJ is tied for the highest ever measured vertical at 48" (LeBron's is 44", Kobe's was 38").
    10. MJ's work ethic and competitive drive are both arguably as good or better than anyone ever. Even Kobe, who many younger generations think had the highest will to win with his Mamba mentality, has said that MJ was more competitive than he was - because MJ's drive never shut off and he wanted to beat everyone in everything, on or off the court.
    11. Accounting for differences between eras: due to the rules differences, defenses were much more physical in MJ's era and less touch fouls and flagrants were called, plus big men could camp in the lane all-day. This, plus the lack of emphasis on shooting 3s means that MJ took a lot more of a beating when going to the hole or posting up than he would've received nowadays, which means that MJ playing in the modern NBA would've likely played a lot more games, and vice versa [modern players wouldn't have been able to play quite as long back then vs nowadays - edited for clarity]. This also takes into account how much modern medicine, nutrition, fitness, diet, as well as "load management" have helped players.

    • @darchon5
      @darchon5 3 года назад +6

      Now part 2: note that the video creator [edited for spelling] isn't entirely objective and doesn't have all the knowledge when discussing MJ because he admits that he was less than 2 yrs old when MJ finished playing for the Bulls. Those of us who followed MJ's entire career as it happened have a better feel for just how much more dominant MJ was compared to his peers back then vs how dominant LeBron, Kobe, or anyone else was vs their peers. You can hear clear biases, and I gotta clear some things up:
      - He claims "the internet would have you believe" that MJ won every game and made every shot he took - um, no, NO ONE actually says that; it's people who didn't watch MJ play live and/or are haters who interpret comments that way. Granted, yes, some fans can go overboard in terms of diminishing other players, BUT, the same damn thing happens with some fans of other players diminishing MJ. The biggest problem is people from younger generations who don't even give a fair chance at evaluating all the data and watching more than just a couple of MJ highlights yet definitively declaring how so-and-so are better than MJ. All I ask is for people to get as informed as possible about all the realistic GOAT candidates before making GOAT judgments.
      - It's wrong of him to ignore MJ's Wizards years - he implies that MJ wasn't good. But that's false; MJ was still very good and sometimes his old self, and has the best stats of any 39-40 yr old player in NBA history (the next closest were Kareeem and Malone, but they really didn't come close).
      - He's also factually incorrect: MJ's Bulls lost to the Bad Boy Pistons 3 times, not 4. And he failed to make it clear that Phil was only head coach for the 3rd of those 3. And Pippen/Grant were rookies who came off the bench the entire reg season during the 1st of those losses. And in the 3 previous years before that, MJ didn't have much help, and lost in the playoffs as a rookie to a 59-win Bucks team (with 2 all-stars, and 1 future hall of fame player & coach), and then to the 67 & 59 win Celtics dynasty teams.
      - He basically implies Phil Jackson is the GOAT coach, but people don't seem to realize that Phil's 1st head coaching job ever in the NBA was in MJ's 6th season, and he wasn't an all-time great from the very beginning; he had to learn and MJ made him a better coach also, not just the other way around. And I appreciate that you mentioned some of this about Phil - he was not known as the "Zen master" until they started winning back-to-back and [edit, forgot to add: threepeat] titles.
      - He calls Pippen "the best sidekick in sports", which imho is overrating him. Plus, almost no one talks about how MJ made Pippen better, not just in terms of skills but also instilling a killer mentality. Yes, Pippen was the perfect complement to MJ's style and personality, but in terms of how good he was on the court: Pippen was only an all-star 7 times in his 17 seasons, was all-NBA 1st team 3 times, and was all-defensive 1st team 8 times - really great, but not like he's a top 20-25 player ever. Pippen's career PER is only 127th. For perspective: ALL of LeBron's all-star superteam teammates have much higher career PERs; the lowest being Bosh at 67th and now Carmelo at 86th. AD, D Wade, Westbrook, Kyrie, and Love are all in the top 50. No, Pippen's not a "glorified role player" (again, dude is exaggerating what is said), but no he couldn't carry a team by himself and his career shows it. After the Bulls, he was a shell of his Bulls self even though age-wise, he was still at the back-end of his prime at 33 and beyond.
      - He hypes up Grant and Kukoc, but honestly, they were NOT more than role players. Grant (career 11.2 pts/gm) was an all-star only once in 17 yrs and Kukoc (11.6 pts/gm) never made an all-star team in his 13 yrs. And again, MJ made them better players in terms of mentality. You mentioned Rodman, but keep in mind that 34-37 yr old Rodman with the Bulls was past his prime, though still excellent in rebounding & on D.
      - He paints MJ as a black hole and ball hog before Phil, which he certainly was a lot more of than later on, BUT it should be noted that in his 5 yrs before Phil became head coach, MJ averaged 5.9 ast/gm, which is actually higher than MJ's career 5.3 ast/gm avg. So MJ's 'selfishness' early on gets a little overblown. Also, he mentioned how Kobe patterned his game after MJ's, which is true, BUT, it should be noted that even though Phil coached Kobe longer (12 of Kobe's 20 yrs) than he did MJ, Kobe's career 4.7 ast/gm are significantly lower than MJ's, and even Kobe's avg of 5.2 ast/gm over the 12 Phil seasons is still slightly lower than MJ's career avg.
      - He implies MJ was a jerk/asshole all the time to his teammates, which isn't close to true. He was a jerk at times, not most or all of the time, and not to all of his teammates. This is way, way overhyped by too many people.

    I honestly think that Jordan is underrated today. Yeah, there is still a lot of hype but the fact that there are people who exist that think LeBron is better than MJ, means that Michael isn’t respected enough. I love LeBron. He’s incredible and the absolute best of his generation. He will probably end up (probably already has) with the greatest career of all time. His peak has lasted over 15 years. The thing is, Jordan’s peak was higher (by a good amount) and he brought an intensity, a beauty,and energy that I don’t think will ever be duplicated.

      @johndlc1983 3 года назад

      Jordan got stole on and blocked a few times, which every nba player has got done to them. Now compair mugsy vs jordan accomplishments, yeah ill wait. Your a clown. Mugsy got steals cause he was a good player but got nowhere other than the mentioning of his height.

    • @herrzimm
      @herrzimm 3 года назад

      @@johndlc1983 It isn't about accomplishments, or awards, not even 'greatness" in general. It is about motivation. Someone who is the shortest NBA player in history having a 16yr career is nothing to sneeze at. It is about overcoming every obstacle despite everyone saying you had no right to be in the game, and yet once in the game actually making the "greats" take notice and have to contend with you and your abilities.
      The steals/block on Jordan isn't that "it happened all the time. It was that it was done by someone a FULL FOOT SHORTER than Jordan, and over several years.

    The biggest thing this guy gets wrong; is that Jordan was selfish with the bulls early on. He tried to pass but the early bulls sucked and kept missing. So Jordan had to shoot he is not at all correct on that part. And then his wizards run was amazing he was still a top 25 player at 39 and 40 years old; never done before. Jordan was clearly not as nasty as this guy says; if he was then he would have 0 friends.
