    I've gotten myself so confused for my skills check from second guessing this (for no reason, of course!) this really helped calm my nerves. Very easy to understand, clear to follow, showed me exactly what I needed. Thank you!

    To clarify, the primary and secondary fluids must be compatible for you to do this?

      Yes

      Absolutely! They will mix in the same tubing (primary) before being infused into the patient and therefore must be compatible.

    but now the second chamber will have saline instead of the medication ? so we have to finish the saline before the medicaiton infuses for back lime prime

      Yes, the secondary tubing and chamber will have saline or whatever fluid is in the primary bag. When you program the pump and open the valve of the secondary tubing, the pump will start to pull the fluid from the secondary bag, including the saline you just primed it with. This is only a minimal amount.

    So do you need to unclamp primary when you’re back priming? Ik you unclamp the secondary

      The clamp of the primary line opens to the patient so should be closed when you prime the secondary line. Once you lower the piggy back (with the open clamp), it will pull the fluid from the primary bag into the tubing of the secondary.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi. What if primary gets empty but secondary still running? Using iv pump

    • @NursingSchoolExplained
      @NursingSchoolExplained  10 месяцев назад +3

      As long as both bags are set up the correct way (secondary ABOVE primary) and the pump is working correctly, it will pull the fluid from the higher bag. When those fluids run out, it'll switch over and pull from the primary bag. If the primary bag is empty, it'll suck air into the tubing and the pump will alarm "air in tubing" or "air in line". This is a built-in safety mechanism. Always check with the manufacturer's guidelines and ask for help if something unexpected occurs.
      Hope this helps!
