They were mostly all conscripts on both sides. They all had better things to do with their lives, but they were told what was expected of them and they did it. Gockel went into the roof repair business after the war and was very successful. He's gone now.

I lived close to Gockel when i was a child. He was a Legend in my village. Not because he was a Nazi fighting in the german army that time but because he always told about the horros of war.
Meeting Franz was a highlight of my life. Have you seen my Omaha Beach film and Return to Normandy? Franz is a big part of that.

Franz Gockel. I met him and interviewed him in France in 2004. It was a great reunion. He is now deceased. Mr. Johnson is still alive at 96.
