Dixie, just discovered your channel. I'm a 71 yr old grannie who can't even go for a walk due to osteoarthritis. The kicker is I live right here in Colorado and can only drive to see these sights. Keep up that hiking, girl, because I can see much more of the beauty of these mountains thru your eyes in your videos. Thank you for sharing your experiences! Look forward to the next video!! : )
This is, I think, the most visually stunning video you've created thus far. The quality of the equipment, camera angles, subject matter, etc are top notch. And of course huge shout out to Aaron's outstanding editing skills- I especially loved the tent setup sequence and starry night 💕 but of course the real star of the show was the coyote encounter- moved me to tears. What an incredible experience! This is why I hike solo as well. Thank you thank you thank you for taking us along with you. I hope you know how much it means to so many of us 💕
Pretty much came here to say the same. Thought the coyote encounter was going to be the peak, then that timelapse of the starry nite sky over the mountains stole my breath. Truely stunning and just shows the glory of our creator.
I like hiking alone because everyone I go with just wants to get to the destination as quick as possible and get back home. I like to take my time and enjoy the journey to the destination.
That would be my issue too! I like to take my time unless there is a reason to hurry. I mean hiking (for me) is for relaxing and seeing what’s out there!
Sometimes it takes others awhile to realize that it's all about the journey, not the destination. Sometimes they never do make that discovery. Maybe try to share your wisdom with them?
After watching this video, I am reminded of the poem "High Flight". "Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark nor even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God." Dixie, may God always be with you on your travels and protect you.
I like that you don't over-saturate your videos with talking or music. Your commentary is just enough to punctuate the experience. The way you present your content just makes me feel like I'm just along for the hike experiencing it with you. The pacing, shot choice, letting the scenery, and natural sound "sit" with the viewer, all combine to make it so peaceful and enjoyable. Thanks again for bringing us along and taking the effort to make your content so inviting.
I love camping and hiking alone. Everyone always gives me a hard time about it, but I’m for sure not gonna let others or fear drive my direction in life. On to the next adventure!
Do you get scared at night? I'm going hiking with my dog and a friend and I think the only thing would be if I was alone in my tent in the middle of nowhere and a sketchy male hiker showed up...
@@ShelbyWalkerAdams Honestly, sometimes I do. But, I’ve been camping alone for a long while now. Bad things can happen anywhere anytime. I think of it this way, yes…A human can choose to do something to me that can make a huge impact on me. That’s their choice. Not mine. I’m choosing to live my life regardless of others choices. I do take safety precautions: situational awareness, not announcing that I’m alone, knife, and pepper spray. I trust my gut. You can also carabiner your tent closed at night. For me personally, I prefer to to alone in the deep wilderness over any sort of noisy party. My last camping adventure was in the Teton backcountry. The people camping around me were of my same mindset and attitude. I was left alone at camp, but met the friendliest people on trail. Try it out and have an adventure! What choice do YOU want to make?
Dixie, this video is amazing in so many different ways. The sequences of the bee, the coyote, the fades in & out of setting up your tent, the views, the music, your voice & melodic accent. Thank you. 🌈

Awesome video! After years of suffering from migraines I was finally able to find some long term relief. I was living in Arizona at the time and I discovered desert hiking. It was so amazing. After all that suffering I felt like discovered the outdoors again. I just wanted to hike all the time. My wife would be grudgingly go with me. At the recommendation of a friend I convinced her to do a “day hike” to Flagstaff….Humphries Peak. I had no idea….our little day hike turned into a 12 hour mountain climb. We were totally not prepared. A light jacket, tennis shoes, no hat, no gloves or rain gear. We each had a small container of water and some beef jerky. Once we got over the tree line I kept pushing her to keep going despite a very cold wind that would literally blow us over. False peak after false peak. Scrambling up the side we finally made to the top at 12,600ft. It was freaking awesome! Once to the top we realized we were only halfway done. It was a long hike back. We’re divorced now and don’t think she ever forgave me for that day! I would totally do that again. My guess she won’t go near a hike ever again!
NO ONE does wildlife photography and videography like you, Dixie! It is truly art. And can we talk about those shoes? I couldn’t take my eyes off of that lemon yellow! The poor coyote was just trying to locate another of his kind. Didn’t seem to be any others around or they would have called back. Also I was amazed at how many trout there were! Beautiful! That was a gorgeous trail, for sure!
Lots of people wouldn't understand the patience and dedication it takes to leave a camera under water for an unknown amount of time; just to see if you can get a shot of some fish. But I'm here for it and I appreciate your dedication to making such stunning videos!
Oh wow. I’m only 2min in and those minutes have summed why I love to hike and camp alone. My mum used to call me “unsociable and selfish” but I don’t see it that way. I work all day with people so for me the trails are somewhere I can just be with my own company and thoughts and mentally it is so good, although for the past year I’ve been dealing with some emotional issues and some days being on my own with my mind are better than others. But your videos Dixie are so wonderful and I can escape for those minutes to somewhere peaceful and wonderful. THANK YOU🙏 btw, those bee shots were just incredible!
Really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Great photo work! I've been solo backpacking since I was a teenager (first trip in 1973). I really enjoy the solitude and the ability to go at my own pace. I also really like how after a few days of isolation you start picking up on the environment around you and start smelling, hearing and seeing things you wouldn't notice if you were with a bunch of people. Hoping I'll be physically able to do the PCT SOBO in 4 years since I'm getting older.
Dixie, your videos/content are always wonderful. But, your videography/cinematography and narrative recently are really elevated and I am both impressed and appreciative. Thank you.
Dixie you rock. Based on watching your vids I went with a buddy and hiked 30 miles of the CDT. Later that year I was diagnosed with DISH. A disease of the back and may never backpack again. I appreciate the boldness you've shown and how you've inspired an old man. Bless you.
Jessica, Another OUTSTANDING video from your collection that shows your hiking and amazing cinematography. The bumblebee flying to the Mules ears (Wyethia amplexicaulis) flower is right out of photo school. You have become an amazing storyteller as well, the coyote encounter was wonderful to watch. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR HIKE, . . . Mike
I like the way your videos have "evolved" over the years and the miles. Some of your best work is when it's not about "getting somewhere" but rather about "being somewhere." Keep up the good work from a fan and "groupie."
The sequence starting at 1:45 is a great example of nectar robbing! This is a behaviour where a bee will drink nectar from a flower through a hole bitten into the base of the flower, rather than entering through the flower's actual opening. So the bee gets nectar, but doesn't get coated in the flower's pollen - it's interesting because that bee is not facilitating pollination, as we expect all bees to do, because it is avoiding getting coated in pollen!! Really awesome observation!!
Excellent!!!! Thank you!!!! When I go backpacking with friends, I'll hang back until they are out of sight and then I stop and enjoy my environment, and I'll start up again at a slower pace. I did this for a week in Yosemite last year and it was quite peaceful and rejuvinating. When I'm out alone I'll keep a fairly slow pace and just enjoy the serenity.
Yes, the solitude can be frightening to some, and heaven to others. I'm like you, and traveling alone is SO enjoyable. I drove from Charlotte to the Kenai Peninsula in AK, and I don't know anybody else that would have put up with the way the trip went at times. But those are the parts that make the best stories! And Dixie, your vids are getting so good, I think Robt Redford will be calling you about an appearance at the next Sundance Festival. Your macro stuff is so enjoyable and you have a good eye for composition- BRAVO! What fun!
You did one of my favorite loops! I just did a run out there this past weekend, though we do it in the opposite direction that you did. I nearly cried watching this because you captured the beauty of this area so well. I'm SHOCKED you didn't see any moose. And I have NEVER seen a coyote in the high country. Thank you for showing the gorgeous scenery of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. ❤
I saw a coyote in the San Juan Mountains while hiking over the Continental Divide. My buddy and I got hit by a surprise thunderstorm and were hunkered down, but we knew the storm danger had passed when a coyote popped up about 50 yards from us and loped over the Divide.
Oh, the bees at work and the orchestra’s rendition of All By Myself…I was smiling and easing into a restful state and then Dixie brought me right back to the reality of the hike! Made me jump a little🤣. During that sequence, I saw a paw print in the snow I wondered if we’d find out what it was. Yep. This was a beautiful video!
Now that was cool Miss Fancy Toenails! We used to have a home below there in Winter Park and Devils Thumb and the Indian Peaks were a towering landmark for us. Love that area and the critters…plenty of elk, moose, bear, and of course those coyotes! Thanks for sharing!
As always your videography is exquisite - I loved the slow motion of the bees. My two labs were really interested in the coyote. The 3 year old was nose to nose with the tv for a while. The 6 year old growled at the tv. BTW watching your RUclips videos on my big screen tv really makes a difference in how much I enjoy them. Thank you for sharing.
I do all my backpacking and canoe trips solo at this point in my life (57 yrs). I got tired of planning with others or a group, just to have folks cancel at the last minute for whatever reason. Now I just go when I want (6 weeks a year). It's so much easier to plan and pack for. And I love the solitude.
Dixie, that Milky Way timelapse is fantastic, especially the way it fades out of view in the dawn light. The slow-bees are also spectacular. You've really got the eye for images. Thanks for sharing this with us. btw, this is also the reason I enjoy hiking alone, there's just a different vibe that is presented.
Dixie I've been watching your videos for years and have enjoyed all of them and learned so much from you. I appreciate the extra work it takes to make them. Your photography skills are awesome l. You have inspired me to hit the AT in 2024. Can't wait.😋
The best backpacking video I've ever seen. It lets the video do the talking, and yet the pacing is not too dragging or indulgent. It's just right. Majestic shots. Panoramic yet intimate. Compelling first person storytelling.
That coyote is giving you the business. That is one of my favorite things to listen to when out backpacking. I could listen to them all night. Thanks for the extended yote coverage.
Dixie this video was awesome. Great job with the photography. I grew up in North San Diego County where we lived in Coyote Country. They have a very distinct bark/howl. He was just trying to hear back from family and friends. This time of year is calving season, so stay away from Moose and Elk with little ones. A few weeks ago a runner was stampeded by a moth Moose in Breckinridge CO Stay well Dixie!!
I know I'm not the first to say this, but the visuals in this video were exceptionally beautiful, and the editing was top shelf. Thank you, for sharing your adventures and for making them so enjoyable to watch.
Dixie I think this is my favorite video so far! The editing, scenery, the animals, the flowers, all so beautiful. I think the fish were my favorite part. Absolutely love the shots you get... These are all my favorite things about hiking and backpacking as well. I gotta make it out to Colorado to try this trail!
I love your photography, especially the closeups of flora and fauna. The time lapse of the early morning sky was stunning. The sequence of your putting up your tent was downright spooky and reminds me of how ephemeral life is. The coyote was so real! Thank you for sharing these visual and auditory wonders with us. May your trails be ever more beautiful and satisfying.
Haven’t watched subscriptions lately; good to get away from the web. And not seen a Dixie vid in sometime but this was spectacular. I gotta say, from the score, the editing, to cinema photography, sounds, to the act-ions.., this was very enjoyable to watch; and deserving of something. An award, cookie, idk. Great production👍
Nature is so beautiful and you capture it so well. The music that you choose is perfect! You don't take yourself too seriously. You're not afraid to show your weaknesses, which helps others learn to walk through their own. God bless you for being a giver!
Ive had an abscess on my face from a root canal, cant get a dentist, on antibiotics so Been struggling lately and I know that being in nature is the solution. Be back out soon.
Haaah! Loved that entrance of tranquility to 'boom - snow'!!! The coyote was a treat - she lost her 'pack'.....more concerned about hooking back up with them than a lone woman coming down the trail. Loved this video! Always a joy watching you. You hit this one out of the ball park!
Solo trips are the best! Beautiful shots in this!! Coyotes can be incredible to hike with. I see them a lot in the mornings here in California, and I love when I get to hear them barking and howling!
I like solo trips because I’m a slow hiker. I take quite a few breaks, especially when gaining elevation. When I hike with a buddy I feel rushed and usually end up way more sore and tired at the end of the day. Further, I’m more of a camper than a hiker. I love a 5-7 mile hike, then chilling at my campsite enjoying the solitude. No need to engage or entertain. I work a job that requires constant and intense social interaction. Solo backpacking is one of my main ways to decompress. I do like hiking with others, but given the choice, I go it alone.
Well that was a wonderful video I got so into it that it was gone before I had a chance to say or do anything. That coyote could have been a male also they squat too from time to time. That trail reminded me so much of the Granite Canyon Trail up out of Jackson Hole Wyoming over into Alaska basin, when you was looking down on that water that reminded me a lot of that. I took that trail I just mentioned in 1976 in the middle of the summer and on the way down I came down towards Jenny Lake, down through hurricane pass and I stopped to take a picture of the Grand Tetons all three of them it took two pictures and when I held the camera down to see if I had any more film and I looked up the clouds had already dropped and covered the Grand Teton itself that told me right off the bat I better get down off that mountain cuz I was in short sleeve shirt and shorts and by the time I got down to my pack it was snowing on me but I loved every minute of it. I thought you might enjoy my little trip into Tetons the trip you just made reminded me of it so much. Thanks for the video have a great day and stay safe out there Dixie.
The trick with the trout(s) was fun (and sneaky). The Milky Way time-lapse was 👌, mwah. This trail does look like a moderate and rewarding good candidate to initiate someone on the wonders of nature hiking, thanks Dixie & Aaron 🙏😍
Thank you for showing that you don’t have to set out on a through hike to see and hike a beautiful trail. A great hike can be done in one or two overnights. Your content is so beautiful. Thank you
This is what it's all about for me. You're experiencing the true gifts of the wilderness. Hiking alone is simply in another dimension from anything you could ever do in life !
I'm about to go on a solo road/ camping trip. Going all over middle and northern California. Watching this is getting me jazzed for the quiet and the nature.
OMG this is by far the best video, and I have been binge watching your videos every day! you are so brave, I love every second of your content. I've learned so much. I'm gathering gear and practicing locally. I can't wait for my big day in the wilderness! 🧡
Hi legend.! Great to seeyou still conquering the snowy rocky mountain. The coyote is most probably calling for its cups or partner. At time we can tell by the sound other animale make, what else is around & close by. It'ssomething worth researching & learning by all backpackers & hikers when adventuring in area where there's other inhabitants besides humans. Stay safe matey. greetings from Australia.
I know others have already said so, but this is the most beautiful backpacking video I have ever seen. This is the one, the one I will send to my son that will hopefully get him to go on a trip with me finally. Thanks so much!
Wow, great camera work & editing. I watched everyone of your videos when you first hiked the AT & enjoyed them all. I got away from watching RUclips videos and have just started back watching them again. Your videography is really really good. Very professional, Dixie. You’ve come a long way since that first day on the AT. I’m proud of you! Great job!!
One of your best videos ever. There is some really beautiful footage in this one. I know the exact area you were in. I'm headed to Estes Park and RMNP in 3 weeks, and I'm so pumped! I have absolutely got to find some snow to step foot in. I love snow! This Missouri heat and humidity has GOT to go!
Excellent videography! Cool encounters with the locals, and wonderful synopsis at the end! You amaze, excite, and encourage, more than all the backpackers I watch...Hike on, Youngin! Keep on keeping on!
This video should be watched during lunch to set the tone for the rest of the day. However your morning went, nature's sights and sounds will smooth things out. Dixie's low keyed voice provides just enough info to let the movie move itself along. We don't have to be there to know it's there. And sometimes, that's enough.
Dang, I'm enjoying my fancy enhanced HD(?) SMART TV. The nature shots were UNBELIEVABLE with these old eyes. (I'm also glad that I'm usually casting as I DO BELIEVE that I could count every stone on the Mnts and every flower in the fields. So THAT'S why you carry all that extra gear. HAHAHA (I have the same reaction when they broadcast any Arial city shot, but Thanks. HAHAHA)
Have watched your work for years. You have evolved positively with your content, imagination, and videographic skills (which are superb). For our sakes accept the loss of great photographic experiences and independence for the considerable increase in safety that comes from adeventuring with others. I come from both the selfish place of wanting to see more of your work and joie de vivre derived from watching your productions.
O M G! That coyote footage was amazing! Truly priceless. 🥰. National Geographic should be hiring you to get footage of all the wonderful critters you meet along the trail.

The use of a tripod and manual focus for the macro sequences (1:05) really raises them to another level.
I really like the new filming/editing style of these videos. Beautiful and great story telling. Excellent job on bee slo mo
So, a sociable coyote, a UFO, the Milky Way, and beautiful scenery.. I'd call that a 10.
Yep! My Blue Heeler agrees that is a coyote Dixie! She howls w/ them frequently around here; especially, in Jan. @ Feb..
The bee, the trout and the night sky, BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you for sharing.
These videos are always so mentally liberating for me. It’s hard to place a value on that living in the turmoil of 2022.
That underwater shot of the trout was amazing.
Ohhhhh, I just loved the parts with the bees. How simple and beautiful. You have a most wonderful eye for such things.
I adore your on-trail videos so much, Dixie! Thank you, as always, for sharing your experiences!
Fantastic. So many folks have never seen the Milky Way and you saw it so bright it shone through the passing clouds.
Ive had an abscess on my face from a root canal, cant get a dentist, on antibiotics so Been struggling lately and I know that being in nature is the solution. Be back out soon.
Oh gosh Dixie! This video is magnificent! Thank you so much and so glad you can still get out there and hike!
Haaah! Loved that entrance of tranquility to 'boom - snow'!!! The coyote was a treat - she lost her 'pack'.....more concerned about hooking back up with them than a lone woman coming down the trail. Loved this video! Always a joy watching you. You hit this one out of the ball park!
Stunning video! The gorgeous fish! The coyote!, the bees! This video is so good for the soul.
Loved the bee and flowers piece with music, and the coyote etc. You’ve taken hiking videos to a new level! 🙂🙏
What a beautiful area, you and your critters, the wildflowers are popping. Thanks
Thank you for showing that you don’t have to set out on a through hike to see and hike a beautiful trail. A great hike can be done in one or two overnights.
Your content is so beautiful. Thank you
Certainly not alone.......lots of friends along the way.👍👍
This is what it's all about for me. You're experiencing the true gifts of the wilderness. Hiking alone is simply in another dimension from anything you could ever do in life !
🤣🤣 7:25 Coyote: "👀..." HW: "Uh-uh"
Great cinematography, beautiful scenery, and you’re back country skills are admirable ~ thanks for sharing ! 👍👍
Thanks for taking us along in this beautiful video. My backpacking days are over but I still like to get into the mountains for a little hike.
Great video! The close-up of the bees and the coyote encounter were awesome!
And this is why some of us live and hike in Colorado! Coyote video is excellent!
All I can say is WOW!
I completely understand your desire to hike alone.
I miss the mountains.
Great cinematography 👍❤️
Of all the great things on this video, I was blown away by all the fish right after the stream crossing.
Great job!!
So beautifully filmed, Loved it and your down to earth natural commentary.
One of your best! Loved the way you create a feeling in me as a viewer, instead of telling/saying what it's like.
Hope you had a lovely time in our beautiful state! Indian Peaks is one of my favorite places to explore, come back anytime!
So well done! Felt guilty for watching for free. Keep up the great work
Thank you so much!
That whole area around Skyscraper is so beautiful!
Excellent videography! Cool encounters with the locals, and wonderful synopsis at the end! You amaze, excite, and encourage, more than all the backpackers I watch...Hike on, Youngin! Keep on keeping on!
Most beautifully edited and scored of all the posts I’ve seen of yours. A real pleasure!
Thanks Dixie, I needed that! Great job on the photography and cinematography!!
Thanks for taking us with you.
Oh my gosh I cried watching the night sky.. thank you Dixie.
Perfect sound track for this hike. Amazing!
This video should be watched during lunch to set the tone for the rest of the day. However your morning went, nature's sights and sounds will smooth things out. Dixie's low keyed voice provides just enough info to let the movie move itself along. We don't have to be there to know it's there. And sometimes, that's enough.
Beats the heck out of anything I've done lately! It's wonderful to see you living the life you love and it being your job / career.
Very happy for you
Dang, I'm enjoying my fancy enhanced HD(?) SMART TV.
Beautiful Colorado scenery and amazing videography. Thank you for sharing Dixie.
your video skills, story telling, editing, and all have greatly improved over time!
That was a lovely video Dixie! Beautiful scenery. Thankyou for all the effort.
I absolutely second the remarks from Vanessa R below. Stunning video. They just keep getting better and better. Thank you.😃
What an incredible adventure! I actually just camped at devils thumb the other night on a 22 mile loop I did in the Indian peaks wilderness
Magical photography! Thank you!
My goodness Dixie! You have become an amazing photojournalist! Your video moved me and right at the crescendo you stumble and show us Dixie and it was perfect! Love it soooo much. Thank you for being you and answering the call of the wild.
