  • One of the biggest NBA debates is if Bill Russell is better than Wilt Chamberlain. Many of his supporters point to the 11 titles he won with the Boston Celtics. On the flip side, his detractors mention that he always had the better team over Wilt. The author of "The All-Time Greatest Book" series goes in-depth on why this is the biggest myth in basketball.

I agree. Being from Philly in 1966 the Sixers were equal to Boston in 1967 & 1968 The Sixers were better than Boston in 1969 LA Lakers were better than Boston

Only two of Wilt's teams were superior to Russell's Celtics teams: the 66-67 76ers and the 68-69 Lakers. The 67-68 76ers might have been the better team, but, as the channel host points out, Billy Cunningham missed the entire playoffs with an injury- a decisive loss to the 76ers. That would mean to me that, when Wilt had the better team, his record against the Celtics was 1-1.
The host points out that an argument can be made that several Celtics were HOFers only because of their association with Bill Russell. Okay....but what about, say, Larry Costello? Would he be in the HOF were it not for his association with Wilt? If the fact that several Celtics were not All-Stars yet made the HOF redounds to Russell's credit, shouldn't that same courtesy not be extended to Wilt?
The 68-69 Lakers loss was the fault of Butch Van Breda Kloff and no one else. Late in game seven, Wilt came down with a rebound and banged his knee. He had to be helped from the court. After a few minutes, the pain receded to a point he could live with and he signaled Coach Kloff that he was ready to go back in. At first Kloff ignored him but finally told Wilt "We're playing better without you.". The two feuded all year, mainly over very petty things, but it boiled down to the two men just could not get along. To ultimately prove he was the boss, Kloff cost the Lakers a championship.

Wilts 1968-1969 Lakers with Jerry West and Elgin Baylor where deeper than Bill Russell's 1968-1969 Celtic, and somehow a slightly injured over the hill Rusell still found a way to beat a better a much younger and more talented team in a 7 games series. Most of Russell's teams where better than Wilts, but on paper Wilt's 1969 Laker where much better than Russell's 1969 Celtics.

And wilt was the captain and FMVP of 2 of the top 10 greatest teams of all time...the 1st being the 76ers team in 1967, where he led the team to at that time the most wins in NBA history (68 wins) while leading the league in assist, blocks, rebounds, and efficiency from 67-69…The next team, AS A 35 YEAR OLD(without modern medication and training that increases longevity) he shattered his previous record, setting the bar to 69 wins…with a winning streak of 33 wins in a row…a record that is still standing to this day

Jerry west has come out and said that it was Van Breda Kolff and his on going fued with Wilt that cost them game 7. It was his call not to feed Wilt and as everyone knows he kept him on the bench as they lost.

This is a non-existent myth. I have yet to read or see an interview with a member of the 67-68 76ers/68-69 Lakers or a basketball writer who covered those teams argue that the 67-68/68-69 Celtics were the better team. The most egregious omission in your presentation is that AFTER the controversial SI article on Wilt's return to Philly, he proceeded to dominate the 65 playoffs (e.g., 29.3 points, 27.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists) and he almost willed his team to victory against the greatest Celtics team of the Russell era. In the East Finals, Chamberlain became the ONLY player in NBA playoff history to average a 30-30 (e.g., 30.1 points, 31.4 rebounds) in a playoff series.
In Game 7 of the 65 East Finals, Chamberlain was 12-15 from the field, he scored 30 points, grabbed 32 rebounds, and he scored the last 6 points of the game to cut the Celtics lead to 1 point. Unfortunately, Havlicek stole the ball and the rest is history. The 65-66 76ers had to win the last 8 games of the year to capture the East crown, but the Celtics were only 1 year removed from fielding the best team in Celtics history and the 76ers having to wait almost 2 weeks before entering the playoffs certainly factored into the 76ers poor playoff performance.
The 66-67 and 67-68 76ers were clearly better than the Celtics and same goes for the 68-69 Lakers squad. The 66-67 76ers were an all-time great team. The 67-68 76ers were on the brink of defeating the Celtics in 5 games before injuries and woeful shooting led to a 7 game series loss. The 68-69 Lakers won the first 2 games of the NBA Finals, but up and down performances in the remainder of the series led to another 7 game series loss to the Celtics. Ironically, Wilt was having his best offensive performance (e.g., 18 points, 7-8 from the field) in Game 7 of the series before hurting his knee in the 4th quarter.
The real myth is that Chamberlain took himself out of the game after the injury, but video of the game demonstrates that he received treatment on the court and he remained in the game. Wilt is clearly hobbled by the injury, so Butch Van Breda Kolff calls a time out and Wilt goes to the bench for further treatment. According to Van Breda Kolff, Chamberlain asks to come back in the game, but Butch tells him, "We're doing better without you." In essence, Van Breda Kolff put his ego ahead of winning and he ignored the fact that Chamberlain sacrificed for the team by agreeing to Van Breda Kolff's request to "rebound and play defense." In the 1969 playoffs, Wilt faced off against 3 HOF centers (e.g., Thurmond, Beaty, Russell) and he averaged 24.7 rebounds and 8.5 blocked shots in 18 playoff games.

Despite the fact that wilt played against the second most HOF player at his position(only behind kareem and parish, which he played 7 years less than both) He PLAYED THE MOST TOTAL GAMES against another hof center….see list below lol
(mind you these are their barefoot heights, in the modern NBA you would add 1-2 inches to their height, as players have been measured in their shoes only after 1977)
C-Bill Russell: 6’10” HOF (143 games played in 9 seasons)
C-Kareem Abdul Jabbar: 7'2" HOF(27 games played in 4 seasons)
    C-Willis Reed: 6,10” HOF(72 games played in 8 seasons)
    C-Walt Bellamy: 6'11" HOF(100 games played in 11 seasons)
    C-Artis Gilmore: 7'2" HOF
    C-Bob Lanier: 6'11" HOF(17 games played in 3 seasons)
    C-Nate Thurmond: 6'11" HOF(47 games played in 4 seasons)
C-Bob McAdoo: 6’10” HOF (5 games played in 1 season)
    C-Elvin Hayes:6’9 “ HOF (22 games played in 4 seasons)
(Wes Unseld is also a HOF center but he is 6’7) (26 times in 5 seasons)
(Dave Cowens is also a HOF Center/Forward but he is 6”9)(17 games played in 3 seasons)
(Connie Hawkins is also a HOF Forward/ center but he is 6”9)(31 games played in 4 seasons)
(please note there are more HOF PF who guarded and were guarded by wilt chamberlain but the majority of them are 6’8 to 6’9)
SO THATS 574 OUT OF 1045…WHICH TRANSLATES TO 54% OF WILTS GAMES BEING PLAYED AGAINST ANOTHER HOF CENTER…

There is but when it comes between these two the argument is always based on championships. We already know no matter how great one player is he cant beat 5 that play together as a team. Wilt, Jordan, Kobe they all tried it with the same result. But to say Russell is better no his teams were better every position was a hall of famer. Plus they were built to play together to achieve one goal win a championship. At a time when most teams were just trying to stay in business, and players couldn't go to other teams. So while stats arent everything it still shows wilt out preformed Russell each time. Yes Russell still won the games but even West and Baylor couldnt beat the Celtics. If Russell's teams weren't that good then how come not even the Lakers could win? Russell didnt dominate them so it must be a team effort.

@@RG-ct6qz exactly how did he make his teammates better? Or did he pass them the ball and they made shots? Im aware Wilt said that. But how does it make sense to take the ball away from the best scoring option, and the most efficient one no less. There was plenty of ways to get his teammates involed but thats easier said than done. How many times were they watching Wilt like they were fans instead of actually playing. Multiple teammate have said they didnt play as hard as they should because they had Wilt and he can put up huge numbers. Im well aware that Wilt can be selfish, pety, stubborn, even insubordinate to coaches he doesnt respect. He has plenty of faults. Its just ironic when a player wins more championships then they get they leader tag and making teammate better. Which I'm not saying Russell wasn't a leader but makes his teammates better how? He played unselfish basketball as if he could put up numbers he was not a good shotter and had score near the paint. His goals was also on winning championships Wilts wasn't. Again teams dont even make that a goal even in today game fans do.

LOOK AT IT THIS WAY THIER WAS NO SUPERSTARS WINNING IN THE 1960S EXCEPT WILT...... THOSE 2 RINGS COUNT FOR SOMETHING.....THE FACT THAT WILT WAS ABLE TO WIN TWO RINGS.....
