He sit's on the curtain rod or shower head and chatters away, soaking up steam and sometimes drinking from the stream. I think he chastises me for using such hot water - he prefers cool or even cold water to bath in. Occasionally he asks for a shower by landing on my shoulders and nibbling my ear. I turn the water force and temperature down as low as I can tolerate and he gets SOAKED. Fun times. I don't know how this applies to finches but one of the most fun things for parrots is training
HI There, I can see that Leporello is in his prime.. perfect plumage. Gigi has lost a few feathers here and there due to our hot climate here in Malta. In a month or two he will be back to himself. You are so right, some birds need to be entertained with some sort of toys or something to nibble at. I am Gigi's playground, he's on my shoulder nibbling at my ear, on my arm playing with my watch or mobile.. and always up to something. We have our small routine now, as soon as I open his cage he flies onto my shoulder and the fun and play starts from there. I have just watched and subscribed o your channel. Your goldfinch is absolutely delightful. Learning quite alt from you. We had a goldfinch for 2 years (rescued, sat next to his dead parent on the road) Mango was gorgeous and it was a pleasure owning her. Sadly she flew out of a gap in the door, we do miss her and call all goldfinches "Mango's" now.

A helpful comment for bird owners who are taking birds into the shower with them; birds can 'dry drown' - meaning the constant water stream from a shower head onto a birds head can cause water to run directly into the birds nares (nostrils) then down into the lungs which can kill them. For birds, being underneath a shower head is different to being in the rain where birds alter their head&body posture/lower their heads to protect nares from water going directly into them, they find shelter from the rain etc. It's absolutely fine to take a bird into a shower but position those in-shower perches out of the constant stream of water, at a place where they can walk along it and into the water allowing them to get in and out under their own terms or where the water will just splash onto them. Spray bottles are also good as you can spray them and avoid the head. 🙂🐦

I personally wouldn't do it, as some sand can be very dusty. I prefer beechwood chips (NOT sawdust, but the actual woodchips). That said, if you use any bedding that isn't sand, one must always provide a bowl of bird's grit in the cage.
Your very good with birds! Question, have you ever tamed a linnet is this way?? I think that would be some achievement I have both goldfinchs and Linnets and find goldfinchs a lot steadier.
Thanks! - I suppose it depends on the individual bird. Most people think of linnets as pure songbirds, so are less likely to put in the effort to tame them. I've found that they can be just as easily tamed as goldfinches, however, they are more sensitive to particular daytimes and do not rest quite as much as goldfinches (goldfinches generally calm down in the mid- to late afternoon, linnets on the other hand get more active during that time).
How are you able to keep leporello as a single finch? Everything i’ve Read about keeping caged song birds usually leads to information about keeping them in pairs or that they pine without a feathered friend other than canary’s of course
You are right, finches should generally be kept in pairs! Leporello is an exception and I got him by accident; he couldn't be socialised with other birds, and since I spend most of my day working from (and being at) home, I decided to take him in.

Myself and my partner are looking at getting two zebra Finches soon and so we have been doing a lot of research. It would be greatly appreciated if you would take the time to answer a few questions we have :) * Is it better to have a single zebra finch or a pair? I've read that it's better to have two females together. *What are the cage basics? ie what is the best type of food/water bowls to have? *Is it safe to use any newspaper to line the bottom of the cage with, is the ink safe? *We do not live by a meadow so what do you think would be the best food and treats for them? *They will be kept in a quiet room that we use regularly but should we cover the cage at all? * What toys would you say are essential? I've read that putting a shallow dish at the bottom of the cage for them to bathe in is a must. * How long should you leave the birds to adjust to their surroundings etc before letting them out of the cage? Hi Daisy, glad you're enjoying the videos! It always makes me happy to see people do research before buying birds. Here are your answers: 1) Always get a pair of zebra finches. It doesn't matter if it's a couple or two females, but they must not be alone. Zebra finches have an insanely strong flock drive and they will literally go out of their mind and die if kept alone. 2) When choosing a cage, go with one that has exterior feeding bowls that can be changed without having to reach into the cage. It will make taming your birds so much easier and this is why: ruclips.net/video/b2Iic7zzGw4/видео.html For water, there are also small water dispensers. I use this kind: amzn.to/2Q6274c (For some reason it is pictured with seeds - they are not supposed to be used this way, only for water, and they must be changed daily just as the food dishes.) 3) Contemporary newspaper ink tends to be non-toxic, however, I'd refrain from using cheap advertising flyers and magazines. The best birdcage liner is beechwood chips (not sawdust!), but they may be hard to find. 4) Zebra finches will enjoy treats such as fresh vegetables (there are bird-safe lists online - no avocado!) and spray millet which you can get at any pet store. 5) Their cage only needs to be covered if you plan to keep lights on past nightfall in the bird room. It is important that birds get the right amount of sunlight and darkness (as close to natural hours as possible) because they have an incredibly sensitive endocrine system. So if you're planning on spending your evenings in the birds' room, a dark, thick bedsheet would work as a cage cover. Note that most birds will panic when the cage gets covered; so it's better to avoid it if you can. 6) Bathing should be done outside the cage during the birds' daily free flight session (at least 4 hours each day), as birds splash about immensely (you wouldn't believe how far they can splash that water). This degree of excess moisture inside the cage will invariably lead to mould, which is toxic to birds and can cause severe health problems. - As for toys, anything that encourages foraging is good. Bad: Anything with a mirror. 7) Before letting your birds out for their free flight, they should be at the stage where they don't panic when you're next to the cage. There's a video on this channel explaining in detail how to get to that stage (The "Your Bird is scared of you?" video). Hope this helps!

Sounds great. Keep them as a pair, if you can - they will thrive much more if they have a little friend of their own species, and will get just as tame as a single bird; plus they'll be much more fun to interact with!
I have this tamed calm green male budgie he's fully finger trained but he is so scared of objects he won't play with toys. How do I get my bird to play with toys. (Be playful)
Omg I’m so happy your uploaded because my emotions have been a mess lately because I went on vacation and had my grandpa take care of Charlie and I specifically told him not to take him outside and he did and while he was the bottom of the cage fell and Charlie got scared and flew away when I came back my mom told me the news so that’s why I’m sad but I’m also happy because we got a black headed caique that matched my personality so much more his name is loco I got him 2 days ago and he just follows me everywhere and already is attached to me but yet I feel bad for being happy because of my baby Charlie and I’m still sad about him and I just don’t know how to feel 😓😓

All of your videos are absolutely lovely! In the future, I hope to own a tame pair of Java sparrows. However, my only bird experience is with a Galah cockatoo my family had when I was younger. Because of that, I might start with parakeets instead, even though they may be louder. How did you come to be so experienced with small birds, if that's all right for me to ask?

Parakeets are definitely a great place to start, they are naturally inquisitive, bond easily with humans and can learn lots of little tricks and games. - To answer your question, I've been taming and caring for birds since childhood (mostly canaries, parakeets, exotic finches and the odd injured domestic bird). Birds in general, with their powers of flight and song, are such fascinating creatures.
Hi! How are you? I have a canary I found on the street last July and I'm trying to tame it. I'm not trying to catch him nor putting my hands inside or near the cage as you say in other videos. Currently, he is not scared of me when I'm around one metre from the cage, but when I come closer he starts becoming a little anxious, not very but a little. My question is: is it a good moment to let him outside the cage? If it's not, when should I let him outside the cage? Thank you for your answers and your useful videos!
Hey, nice to see you! It sounds as if you're making good progress with your canary. It's normal for untame birds to be a little anxious when you get near; this will get better over time if you keep practising with him and feeding him treats. The best time to let your canary out of his cage is when he starts accepting treats (e.g. spray millet) from you through the cage bars: this means he is sufficiently used to your hand that you'll be able to close the cage door when he goes back inside the cage after the free flight without too much stress. Hi! If you're in any way unsure about cutting your bird's nails, you should have a vet do it. First of all, it is easy to injure the bird when doing it wrong, and secondly, being grabbed is a very stressful, trust-destroying experience for a bird, so it's best if a trained professional does it (and not the bird's owner). That said, most birds will take care of their own nails if they get too long, so if you can live with the "imperfect" aesthetic of your bird having longer and shorter nails, and your bird doesn't get caught in anything, I'd say spare yourself and your bird the stress of nail-clipping and leave them as is, and have them done at the next vet checkup if necessary.
Amazing! I think birds understand a lot more than we think. While editing I saw that I'd forgotten to film footage for the swing part, so I put Leporello in the cage and told him to sit on the swing - and he instantly did, ten seconds later I had the film I needed! These little creatures have great intuition. Your bird seems to be like that, too. :)
Birds are like people in the regard that they have likes and dislikes. I've found that birds generally prefer swings that only swing back and forth (fixed in two points) rather than those that swing in all directions (fixed in one point). When introducing a new object or toy, it is important to always do so gradually - put it in the room (!) one day, then nearer to the cage for a couple more days, and finally, put it in the cage. Never put a new toy into the cage right away, birds are scared of anything that they don't know and putting unknown objects in their cage too rashly will make them associate the toy with stress.
Hello... I have a question I want to get my canaries to molt... but I don’t know how to let them molt...can you teach me how to let canaries molt? I’ve been told to decrease light hours... so I started to gradually decrease the light hours from 10 light hours to 9 light hours Is that correct to get birds molt? Hi there, please don't tinker with the light - birds know perfectly when to moult, which is usually at the end of August, early September. The only thing you should do is make sure the canaries' environment is dark when it's dark outside, and light when it's light outside. For instance, if you have them in the living room and don't want to sit in the dark at night, cover their cage as soon as night falls and uncover it before you go to sleep, so that your birds will wake up with the sunrise. That's all you need to do. Birds are very sensitive to even minor changes in daylight, and meddling with the light artifically can cause serious hormonal disruptions, so one really shouldn't do it. Best of success!

Don't worry, birds won't die from not moulting. If your birds aren't moulting, perhaps their diet isn't rich enough. Always make sure to feed greens along with the regular bird food (which should be a quality mix, not just one or two types of seed). And moulting once a year is the regular frequency; sometimes birds start early, sometimes they only start moulting in autumn, it's nothing to worry about, your bird will moult eventually. This year has been very hot weather-wise, so I wouldn't be surprised if many birds were to start moulting later than usual. Again, don't worry, because even if birds don't moult, they won't die. Sometimes birds only moult halfway through (when food is scarce or when someone meddles with daylight times!), they will look frazzled until the next year, but they'll be fine. Three-month-old canaries won't moult the first year, their feathers are as good as new! Again, please don't worry, Nature knows what she's doing. ;)

Denkst du, ich kann die noch etwas zähmen? Und vorallem wenn sie zu zweit sind.. zumindest möcht ich dass sie uns vertrauen. Werde deine Vorgehensweise probiern, aber wie gesagt, meine Annahme ist, dass ich sie nicht total handzahm machen kann.. Myself and my partner are looking at getting two zebra Finches soon and so we have been doing a lot of research. It would be greatly appreciated if you would take the time to answer a few questions we have :)
* Is it better to have a single zebra finch or a pair? I've read that it's better to have two females together.
*What are the cage basics? ie what is the best type of food/water bowls to have?
*Is it safe to use any newspaper to line the bottom of the cage with, is the ink safe?
*We do not live by a meadow so what do you think would be the best food and treats for them?
*They will be kept in a quiet room that we use regularly but should we cover the cage at all?
* What toys would you say are essential? I've read that putting a shallow dish at the bottom of the cage for them to bathe in is a must.
* How long should you leave the birds to adjust to their surroundings etc before letting them out of the cage?

Hi Daisy, glad you're enjoying the videos! It always makes me happy to see people do research before buying birds. Here are your answers:
1) Always get a pair of zebra finches. It doesn't matter if it's a couple or two females, but they must not be alone. Zebra finches have an insanely strong flock drive and they will literally go out of their mind and die if kept alone.
2) When choosing a cage, go with one that has exterior feeding bowls that can be changed without having to reach into the cage. It will make taming your birds so much easier and this is why: ruclips.net/video/b2Iic7zzGw4/видео.html For water, there are also small water dispensers. I use this kind: amzn.to/2Q6274c (For some reason it is pictured with seeds - they are not supposed to be used this way, only for water, and they must be changed daily just as the food dishes.)
3) Contemporary newspaper ink tends to be non-toxic, however, I'd refrain from using cheap advertising flyers and magazines. The best birdcage liner is beechwood chips (not sawdust!), but they may be hard to find.
4) Zebra finches will enjoy treats such as fresh vegetables (there are bird-safe lists online - no avocado!) and spray millet which you can get at any pet store.
5) Their cage only needs to be covered if you plan to keep lights on past nightfall in the bird room. It is important that birds get the right amount of sunlight and darkness (as close to natural hours as possible) because they have an incredibly sensitive endocrine system. So if you're planning on spending your evenings in the birds' room, a dark, thick bedsheet would work as a cage cover. Note that most birds will panic when the cage gets covered; so it's better to avoid it if you can.
6) Bathing should be done outside the cage during the birds' daily free flight session (at least 4 hours each day), as birds splash about immensely (you wouldn't believe how far they can splash that water). This degree of excess moisture inside the cage will invariably lead to mould, which is toxic to birds and can cause severe health problems. - As for toys, anything that encourages foraging is good. Bad: Anything with a mirror.
7) Before letting your birds out for their free flight, they should be at the stage where they don't panic when you're next to the cage. There's a video on this channel explaining in detail how to get to that stage (The "Your Bird is scared of you?" video).

Hi. Thanks for the wonderful video. Do you know of cheaper play stand of better height? I was looking for around 3 feet height play perches but around the price of $30 or so
3 feet high, $30? No chance. Only option at this price point would be to buy screws and to build one yourself with untreated wood from the forest.

Sounds great. Keep them as a pair, if you can - they will thrive much more if they have a little friend of their own species, and will get just as tame as a single bird; plus they'll be much more fun to interact with!

Omg I’m so happy your uploaded because my emotions have been a mess lately because I went on vacation and had my grandpa take care of Charlie and I specifically told him not to take him outside and he did and while he was the bottom of the cage fell and Charlie got scared and flew away when I came back my mom told me the news so that’s why I’m sad but I’m also happy because we got a black headed caique that matched my personality so much more his name is loco I got him 2 days ago and he just follows me everywhere and already is attached to me but yet I feel bad for being happy because of my baby Charlie and I’m still sad about him and I just don’t know how to feel 😓😓

All of your videos are absolutely lovely! In the future, I hope to own a tame pair of Java sparrows. However, my only bird experience is with a Galah cockatoo my family had when I was younger. Because of that, I might start with parakeets instead, even though they may be louder. How did you come to be so experienced with small birds, if that's all right for me to ask?
Hey Melanie, thanks! Parakeets are definitely a great place to start, they are naturally inquisitive, bond easily with humans and can learn lots of little tricks and games. - To answer your question, I've been taming and caring for birds since childhood (mostly canaries, parakeets, exotic finches and the odd injured domestic bird). Birds in general, with their powers of flight and song, are such fascinating creatures.

Hi! How are you? I have a canary I found on the street last July and I'm trying to tame it. I'm not trying to catch him nor putting my hands inside or near the cage as you say in other videos. Currently, he is not scared of me when I'm around one metre from the cage, but when I come closer he starts becoming a little anxious, not very but a little. My question is: is it a good moment to let him outside the cage? If it's not, when should I let him outside the cage? Thank you for your answers and your useful videos!
Hey, nice to see you! It sounds as if you're making good progress with your canary. It's normal for untame birds to be a little anxious when you get near; this will get better over time if you keep practising with him and feeding him treats. The best time to let your canary out of his cage is when he starts accepting treats (e.g. spray millet) from you through the cage bars: this means he is sufficiently used to your hand that you'll be able to close the cage door when he goes back inside the cage after the free flight without too much stress. Hi! What do you think about cutting our bird's nails? Do you think we should do it or is it dangerous for the bird?
Hi! If you're in any way unsure about cutting your bird's nails, you should have a vet do it. First of all, it is easy to injure the bird when doing it wrong, and secondly, being grabbed is a very stressful, trust-destroying experience for a bird, so it's best if a trained professional does it (and not the bird's owner). That said, most birds will take care of their own nails if they get too long, so if you can live with the "imperfect" aesthetic of your bird having longer and shorter nails, and your bird doesn't get caught in anything, I'd say spare yourself and your bird the stress of nail-clipping and leave them as is, and have them done at the next vet checkup if necessary.

Amazing! I think birds understand a lot more than we think. While editing I saw that I'd forgotten to film footage for the swing part, so I put Leporello in the cage and told him to sit on the swing - and he instantly did, ten seconds later I had the film I needed! These little creatures have great intuition. Your bird seems to be like that, too. :)
My bird has a swing but he rarely gets on it,is there a way to get him used to it,or will he get used to it being inside the cage overtime?
Birds are like people in the regard that they have likes and dislikes. I've found that birds generally prefer swings that only swing back and forth (fixed in two points) rather than those that swing in all directions (fixed in one point). When introducing a new object or toy, it is important to always do so gradually - put it in the room (!) one day, then nearer to the cage for a couple more days, and finally, put it in the cage. Never put a new toy into the cage right away, birds are scared of anything that they don't know and putting unknown objects in their cage too rashly will make them associate the toy with stress.

Hi there, please don't tinker with the light - birds know perfectly when to moult, which is usually at the end of August, early September. The only thing you should do is make sure the canaries' environment is dark when it's dark outside, and light when it's light outside. For instance, if you have them in the living room and don't want to sit in the dark at night, cover their cage as soon as night falls and uncover it before you go to sleep, so that your birds will wake up with the sunrise. That's all you need to do. Birds are very sensitive to even minor changes in daylight, and meddling with the light artifically can cause serious hormonal disruptions, so one really shouldn't do it. Don't worry, birds won't die from not moulting. If your birds aren't moulting, perhaps their diet isn't rich enough. Always make sure to feed greens along with the regular bird food (which should be a quality mix, not just one or two types of seed). And moulting once a year is the regular frequency; sometimes birds start early, sometimes they only start moulting in autumn, it's nothing to worry about, your bird will moult eventually. This year has been very hot weather-wise, so I wouldn't be surprised if many birds were to start moulting later than usual.
Again, don't worry, because even if birds don't moult, they won't die. Sometimes birds only moult halfway through (when food is scarce or when someone meddles with daylight times!), they will look frazzled until the next year, but they'll be fine.
Three-month-old canaries won't moult the first year, their feathers are as good as new! Again, please don't worry, Nature knows what she's doing. ;)

Wollte eh fragen, wir kriegen bald einen über 2 Jahre alten Kanarienvogel und dann relativ bald auch ein Weibchen dazu, beide von Vorbesitzern und ich hab keine Ahnung, wie mit denen umgegangen wurde.
