    To be precise, they first removed it in P3P most like to prevent the need of making more animations for the female protagonist, but keeping her options on par with male one. Reload just stuck with it most like out of the same reason: less animations to make.

      its not animation problem, but balance
      they added team member control in p3p, so to balance this they decided to give player only one melee weapon variant

      Tbh, different weapon only give slight advantage, and that's only applied with bow. With bow, even if you miss, you won't fall like other weapon and bow ultimate weapon guaranteed 100% hit, so you'll never miss when using it (including Yukari). I can't see any advantage when using others weapon except bow. They could just remove bow and let the MC use other weapons, instead of remove it.

      @@troev i dont know how to break this to you but this would not change the game. it would be unbalanced if you can switch weapons in battle. the point of the dungeon battle mechanic is to constantly strategize how to progress using as little sp and hp as possible, once in battle you are locked in a role you are responsible for securing it.
      junpei uses fire and takes damage so you do not have to, yukari uses wind and heals so you do not have to. more weapons is just more responsibilities. even if you have all the magic, you will lose sp quicker, even if you have a bow, you are stuck till the end
      they weren't balancing shit, they were just making it easier for them to finish

    I think the in game lore for the mc to be able to use multiple weapons, along with his fusion spell abilities, was that death enhanced all of his abilities overall

      Death only enhanced his abilities so he could utilize the wildcard power. Him being able to use other weapons is just him being naturally adept.

      Think of how fast Joker's bruises healed and how fast he recovered from getting drugged. Shit was overnight

    The upside is that MC could use Axes like Shinji. With Thor you could get Mjolnir as a weapon which gave you a 0sp Zionga as your melee attack

    Other cool facts about this is that the summon voice lines and victory pose would change depending on the weapon you were carrying. I remember one where the protag does a little hair flip when the battle ends lol

    They also removed mp3 Player inside Tartarus. In original Persona 3 after some time you could change music in your mp3.

      You can still change BGMs but I don't think you have access to it inside Tartarus. I got the game on release so I got the p4g bgm pack

    The best part of this was that it gave axes a use later in the game. I remember running Mjolnir on MC endgame; it was really cool.

      Honestly I remember portable feeling a bit unbalanced because if you wanted the full range of standard attacks, you couldn't make your protagonist the strike guy, you NEEDED Akihiko

    I much as I'm adoring Reload, it kinda sucks how many things they just... got rid of.
    Nothing game ruining by any means. The NEW additions and presentation make Reload worth it imo, but at the same time I miss the weapon options, being able to choose the Kendo or Swim teams, even the little things like Tartarus having a transition screen between blocks.

    Someone made a mod-ish for P3P that allows the male MC to wield nearly any weapon type. It's not free of jank (unless it's been improved/remade for the 2023 Steam version). Maybe it's possible for an ambitious user to make a similar mod for Reload?
    In addition, I believe I've read that the WIP FeMC mod for Reload will allow her to wield a similar type of weapon to what she wields in _Portable_ (IIRC). I wonder if it's possible to suggest an add-on that allows her to wield nearly all weapons as well...

      The naginatas in the femc mod are currently just model swaps of the swords iirc, bringing back fes mechanics is kinda out of the scope of the mod

      @@goshator Would it be possible to turn at least one of the 1HSword/Naginata weapons into a somewhat bludgeon-like weapon that deals Strike damage, and another one of them into a polearm-like weapon that does Pierce damage, even if they aren't wielded correctly? (If that workaround is possible, then could it be a separate mod that works for male MC as well?)

The mod currently only changes visual stuff like text and models, since a lot of things can't be changed with current tools including character animations. Game mechanics and weapon stats are most likely out of the question too

      A bit off-topic, but this is also why it's painful to me to hear when people show that mod as proof that "it's that easy" to add femc into the game since "the modders are doing it for free". It'll take modders years before they'll even figure out how to change a lot of stuff, yet alone add social links and change entire story elements

      ​@@goshator That's because modders lack the development tools and assets which the developers of the game had, so they have to work backwards to add those things in. Obviously modders have to figure out how the game functions when they don't have any of the tools or source materials available.
      That being said, I can understand where some difficulty may come from as modders can reusing assets from previous games (as far as I hear), unlike Atlus who would have to redraw and rerecord everything from scratch and that would cost them money along with development time.
      In spite of that, I do feel like P3R should have come out with P3P and FES content out the gate (rather than adding Answer as DLC), especially given the asking price for this game.

    It would have been dope to add that in for reload. Like if the player wanted to use a specific weapon theh could go talk to a party member with said weapon to unlock it

    While it is unfortunate that they left that mechanic out, engaging with Shadows in Reload isn't really that difficult to warrant an extra reach. I can only recall like... 2 times of my total play through where I was caught off guard by a shadow and I was playing on hard. And since you now fully control your party, it'd just feel like an unnecessary addition considering how much is already open to you.
    I don't believe for a moment that it was left out because of "them being too lazy to make the animations" cause have you SEEN THE ANIMATIONS IN THIS GAME? Aigis's 2nd Theurgy alone puts every single Persona game previous to shame like goddamn. The animation team was definitely proud of what they accomplished. I'm sure they would have put the same amount of effort like they did for every other animation had they been called to it.

      while one can simply say just add it for aesthetics, its weird to put it there anyway as aesthetic while makoto cant use the weapons in battle so it contradicts the aesthetic itself

      It wasn't removed cause laziness but rather for balance, in the original you couldn't control your party members so giving the MC access to slash/strike/pierce normal attacks made sense.
      Now that in the remake you can control the entire party you have a fairly even spread of slash/pierce normals (Strike is kinda shafted in that regard having only Aki as a normal striker but that's made up for by having the strongest hitting specials in God's Hand and Akasha Arts) so you no longer need the mc to have multiple weapons.
      Another thing they changed was that they took away the choice of what team to join in the chariot social link, before you had the choice between Running/Swimming/Kendo teams but they made it that the Canon team is the running one.
      Making it the running team makes sense given the context of the Strength and star social links.

      Kinda was disappointed with them not really doing to much creativity liberties with the remake. It’s a one 2 one remake, which means tartarus is still the worst dungeon in Persona series with a slight clean coat of paint…. Seriously hoping for some improvement there but nah. The only time Tartarus felt something was those extra difficulty bosses with the red epic filter that took 2 seconds to implement with unreal. Just really wished they at least MADE the final part of tartarus special or anything. You just go up floor to floor even on the final day… again, just disappointed with this remake. I already 100% and beat the game on the hardest difficulty on a single max social link run. I felt it needed more. :/ especially for 70 dollars and I wouldn’t recommend it at its current price if you played any of the other persona 3 adaptions.

    I have a theory : makoto doesn’t use fists in reaload because just like doom slayer he finds killing enemies with his fists way to easy so he uses weapons for extra challenge

    The best part about wielding any weapon type in the game is that it makes Shinjiro’s axes still useable even after he leaves party. In Portable and Reload once he’s gone the axes are basically useless.

      I kinda prefer them being useless for narrative reasons imo it really makes you feel his absence even more after his death it really Does end up feeling like he wasn't just a extra party member meant to only be there temporarily it genuinely feels like your missing an entire party member for the rest of the game that should be there

      @@middlethenerd : but for same reason, i prefer shinjiro's weapons to still be usable by MC : so the MC may perhaps pay homage to Shinjiro by using his weapons, to remember him by, to feel that Shinjiro's still with the team in spirit.

      @@middlethenerd The fact that it was removed in Portable is more weird honestly. Makoto uses the same sword as Mitsuru and Kotone uses the same spear as Ken. They’re already using weapons utilised by another party member, so why not let them use the other party members’ weapons?
      (The most likely answer for this is that they didn’t want to make more animations for Kotone and they wanted the two main characters to be equal, which is why they removed the ability for Makoto to wield any weapon. Still don’t get why it couldn’t have been brought back for Reload though.)
      I also get the angle of it adding to Shinjiro’s death by making his entire weapon line inaccessible, but being able to use the axes (and most other weapon types) also makes sense narrative-wise for Makoto’s wild card abilities.

    Always used short swords even tho I had all those others options. It's one of those features that It's neat to have but you can easily balance something out of it and not miss a lot

    It’s not very often a rpg lets the protagonist literal throw hands against enemies. It’s usually allies while your character wields a sword. It’s a shame the reboot didn’t bother to keep these other weapon options. Variety is always nice even if they’re not optimal and great if they are.

    I think they should have kept that. This was one of the many things that made Persona 3 special for me. I always thought that since the protagonist could wield any Persona, he could also wield any weapon. That gave us the sensation that our character was truly customizable.

    Is a shame. I really liked to use all weapons, plus. I also miss being able to pick which clubs. I loved the kendo team and the photography club, but in reload you can only be on the track team and art club. I would have at least asked them to keep the option to have the final scene with a girl from the team you had romence, as it was on P3P.

    I believe it was like that in the original, and Fes was the update. Perhaps in the future the fans should be more careful about versions being remastered and not just the game.

      The original also let's you use multiple weapons. Fes mostly added a few scenes and changed some activities.
      P3P was the only version before reload that limited weapon choices.

    I know the video just wanted a short breakdown of the various weapon types so here is a bit more about each type:
    _ 1h sword : average reach and average winding up time in exploration mode
    _ 2h sword : longer reach and slower winding up time in exploration mode
    _ Spear : the same as 2h sword but has pierce attack type
    _ Hammer/rod : unsure It is either 2h sword of the strike attack type or 1h sword
    _ Bow : longest reach and slowest winding up time
    _ Boxing fists : shortest reach but also fastest winding up time.

    I was also disappointed, mostly because that was the only reason to not trow Shinji's weapons, in my opinion the most powerful in the game, now once Shinji's passed away I cannot use it in the MC and had to sell all of it. :(

    I would give up if I were you, Atlus is never going back to the mindset they were when they cooked FES.

      We Know what Liz does after the evetns of p3. Margaret talks about it when you beat her ion p4g. She mentions, loosely and somewhat ambiguously, that liz is searching, with aigis for a way to save door kun

    Thing is it would have made sense for Makoto to be able to use the gloves in reload. There are many instances where Makoto was ready to throw down bare handed and the times he does he always comes out on top.

    I feel like the protagonist in Persona 3 Reload is severely less vocal. Even more so than Joker form P5.
    Here I can here every attack he does. When I was playing P3R I almost forgot he wasnt a mute when I heard him whisper something 15 hours into my run.

      Baton pass and all out attack new animations to remark the characters personalities and make them feel unique, theurgies to make them look useful and, again, remark their personality (and in the case of Junpei add a cherry on top of his Chidori arc) and most ctuscenes being remake from low quality anime to 3D.
      But yes, it is a downgrade because they didnt add the most useless and unnecessary feature. Seriously, it was in one game, how is it a downgrade only here and with all the upgrades the game added.

    dont forget that if you just used the sword you will never hear the mc say "persona" when summoning. youd have to use i think the long sword, bow, or boxing gloves

      tactics was super fun and like gamble x prediction style of gameplay by knowing your teammates habits, now p3reload lets you ccontrol all players but it doesnt hit the same. normies think they're getting more gameplay but its so predictable and overly calculated. P3fes lets you realize you really are just a player along with your teammates, not some omnipresent god who can calculate everyting. P3fes you had to adjust and make the most out of it and create good coordination and teamwork

    Well the practical reason for why they removed it probably stems from not making more animations for Kotone, which then led to them canonising Makoto as a one-handed sword user, as seen in the spin-offs and movies. Besides, I think it's cool for each MC to have their own iconic weapon type. I wonder what 6'll use?

      Firstly, Sho is already an established character, and modern Persona protagonists tend to be blank slates.
      Secondly, Sho's pretty deep into the P4 lore. People who haven't played the games would be really confused by who this guy is and why he's already connected to the Shadow Ops and IT.
      Lastly, dual weapons for a protagonist was already done with Joker's dual knives. While they MIGHT add more weapon types, dual swords feels a bit farfetched. I personally think a gauntlet user or axe user like Aki or Shinji would be cool.

      @@amarant1275 Even then, I think the general appeal of Persona is having a blank slate protagonist, so you don't have to play the prior games to understand what's going on.
      Also, Sho wore green, but his general colour was red. Red hair, red eyes when using Minazuki, etc. His clothes can easily change, but his body can't.

      ​​​​​@@axis1247 Portable introduced the rapiers for Mitsuru though. That came out three years BEFORE Arena. Reload is just replicating how weapons worked in Portable. So you got it reversed, Arena was just reflecting this implementation of Mitsuru not the other way around.

    My favourite was the spear. High attack power and distance strikes were insurance against ambush and added some distance to secure your own ambushes.

    Because early mid to late game, we mainly use Persona and rarely use normal attacks. So they reduce animations. P4 and P5 protagonists only use one type of weapon.

    that's because Reload is primarily a Persona 3 remake, not a Persona 3 FES remake. several other features were also removed, like being able to join the Kendo or Swim team.

      Why are so many people thinking that the og didn't let you swap weapons? And to the other things. The other things like club choices where in the OG persona 3 aswell.
      Technically this isn't even something they cut. Because you would have to remake all animations they didn't include it.
      Tbh it was clear that they wouldn't include weapon switching, in debth AI-Tactics, FeMC or The Answer at launch. The biggest issue is cost vs. use.
      How many people are actually interested enough to dive into a game to even find out they can switch weapons or choose different clubs? Not that many. Similar to how ultimately only a minority of people cares about FeMC and/or in depth AI Tactics (which were gutted and only included since p4 and never became a valid alternative for direct command like they would have been if the tactics are more varied like in p3 or fes).
      And the Answer is much better sold as a seperate DLC because people will eat that shit up.

    Alternate weapons felt like a balancing change, because for the first two blocks of the game you couldn't exactly command your party members to target physical weaknesses. The best way to approach the first Tartarus midboss is to bring in a bow for MC and use that instead of relying on Yukari, whom will attack the same enemy twice and just bring them back up.

    Iirc fes had removed weapons from vanilla it seems but I was unaware mc still had some of them. As originally mc could use every weapon other than aegis because obviously that'd be physically impossible and I think doggos. He could use Yukari alihiko mitsuru Ken and Shinjiros (junpei and mc already shared 2h swords)

    It was the best thing they ever made. As we all know, the game only have akihiko & shinjiro as a strike damage while the slash are 4 person and pierce are 3. But when shinjiro died, I had to pick akihiko in the party throughout the gameplay. I hate to fusion a persona because we all know how long it took to get exactly the skills we want even the skill card ain't helping much as we have to fuse a persona and level it up and if you remember to register it to the conpendium or you go to the shrine and give it away but have to wait 4-5 days I guess then you can have the duplicate of it like AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

    They also technically simplified the tactics menu; however, the action that party members make when controlled by AI is ridiculously good being very dynamic. The only downside is that Shift and Theurgy cannot be done for party members without using Direct Control.
    I find Tactics useful for grinding or extremely niche situations where you want to do something like have Yukari on healing duty or you want party members to do specific things and don't want to waste time in the menu.

      They use Theurgy on bosses or when there are limited options which I think is good.
      The AI doesn't know how close you are to a boss fight, it prefers to save a super strong attack for when its needed rather than using it when you're 2 steps away from the big hard fight for no reason
      I still wish they had more tactics like FES but I am happy with the AI in Reload

    Yeah that's the thing, though. Of course they didn't include that, because that was from P3 FES. They just included all the content from the original P3. Except for Chidori's resurrection, which was introduced in FES. I guess Atlus just couldn't bear to keep Chidori dead after such a heartwarming, dramatic cutscene. Plus, it's canon tha Chidori was alive, since Junpei often speaks of her in P4 Arena, and wears a necklace gifted from her.

    Really a shame they left it out, I never really liked FES, more of a Portable fan, but the one feature I missed in Portable and now Reload was weapon choice. Weapon choice just gave a little bit of expression to YOUR protagonist, made him feel unique, and also let you imagine that he was learning from and with his teammates. It was a little thing that I feel added a great deal of depth. How unfortunate we'll likely never see it again.

    I can understand why it wouldn’t make much sense to have the mc to be proficient will all weapon types which is why I imagine they stuck with a sword but I kinda wish that you could join the archery or boxing clubs to learn how to use other weapon types, they could’ve even tied it in with social links

    Ppl saying this was for balance when Mitsuru/Junpei/Koromaru use slash, and Yukari/Ken/Aigis have pierce. Only people with strike are Akihiko and Shinjiro (barely counts), meaning Akihiko's the only one on the strike team...

    In P3 and fes you couldn't directly control the party members so I looked at this as the developers way of letting the player even the odds if they kept having bad AI rng in a fight.

    tbf only the Axe and 2 hd swd is good in FES, and that's just because of the elemental weapons it had. The 1 hd swd is best for general usage, especially when trying to get golden shadows and whatnot. In the original, you only take a 2 hd swd called Apocalypse just for the +10 all stats effect (the only one that has that there). Otherwise, there's no reason to switch. Now we have variety within just the 1 hd swd, seeing how it can have different affinities and have pierce. Problem is though is they implemented the bad damage formula for weapons in Reload. So using weapons is honestly a bad idea apart from its effects. And 1 hd swd has the best ones.
    It's really a nonissue, the more you think about it.
