Nashville is "Guitar Town". This was Steve's first charted single and off his first album. I will still pop the CD in and listen to all the way through. He did good go far on "$35 and a Jap guitar"!!
I love Steve Earle! Twenty years ago, I was working as a legal secretary in Wichita, Kansas. One day I took my boss to the airport and he noticed my Steve Earle CD in my car. We bonded over our mutual love of Steve.
I had a lyric from this song stuck in my head all last week, but just couldn't remember he song. I was banging my head against the desk trying to remember. Then you go and post it, lol.
What I love about this version is his shout-out to Hank Williams..not just The Lost Highway reference but the way he swooped when he sang calling my N-ame one day.
Thanks for this Don. Guitar Town is a great old song. It would be interesting to watch your reaction to some later Steve Earle. Steve has evolved as an artist. Amerika v6.0 could be taken right out of today’s pandemic but comes out of an album I’ve had for years (called Jerusalem)
Funny story over 30 years ago Steve Earl was playing in Our small city(120,000) up here in Canada . Well after the show the doorman of the club they played was with the band and looking for an after the bar party . He had taken them to another place in my area but they were not home so he was a friend of mine and new we usually had a few drinks after the bar . I had about ten of us there so the band came in and joined us . Steve wasn't with them but his band felt like parting it was a fun night listening to their southern accents and we drank there for a couple hours. Good bunch of folks I think they were the same players as in this video.
Just for the record although Steve was born in Virginia his family was from San Antonio and they moved back there before he was a year old. He ran away from home when he was 14 in search of Townes Van Zandt. He didn't find him until three or four years later in Houston. I think "Guitar Town" is my favorite song of his but it's a hard choice. I think guitar town is probably Nashville but I can make an argument for it being San Antonio or Houston as he was on his way to Nashville from there. If anybody wants to get a feel for my taste in music I highly recommend 1976's documentary movie "Heartworn Highways". In which you will discover not just Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Buddy Miller, David Alan Coe, Richard Dobson, Rodney Crowell but also a 19-year-old Stever Earl. The last three on that list are only in the bonus features at the end of the DVD. And I'll tell you if you can't download it, it's worth buying. You can probably get it from Amazon fairly cheap. Richard Gruver
I think I've mentioned it before but Steve Earle is who got me into alt-country (though I grew up listening to Jerry Garcia and David Grisman so maybe I already was)
For me, if there’s a 10, this is it. I had never heard this live version. It was very good. I do recommend the studio version over this. I never get tired of this one. There is something about the driving rhythm of that acoustic guitar with the added punch of that low, twangy electric that just hits every musical nerve in my body.
Oh snap I heard a classic Earle *grunt right after he says Rollin' outta here tonight. I didn't realize he was incorporating the Grunts that early in his vocal repertoire lol. His later songs he grunts after Every line lol (see Mr. Bojangles)
Lost my comment. Love this song, and the whole album. Hillbilly Highway is, to me, a song that expresses the reason so many people feel like they do. Steve credits doing time when he was busted for drugs, for saving his life. I like his distain for authority, and his social criticisms. Such a talented, socially aware artist. Thanks for sharing this song, Don.😊
He’s got a song you need to do. The audio isn’t great but it’s the only version he’s ever recorded. The song is Elijah’s Church. He preformed it in the documentary Heartworn Highways. He was 17 & playing guitar in Guy Clark’s band. They were sitting around Guy’s kitchen table on Christmas Eve night in 1975. Guy looks at him & say “Would you do Elijah’s Church?”
Lyrics: Hey pretty baby are you ready for me It's your good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone With the radio blastin' and the bird dog on There's a speed trap up ahead in Selma Town But no local yokel gonna shut me down 'Cause me and my boys got this rig unwound And we've come a thousand miles from a Guitar Town Nothin' ever happened 'round my hometown And I ain't the kind to just hang around But I heard someone callin' my name one day And I followed that voice down the lost highway Everybody told me you can't get far On thirty-seven dollars and a jap guitar Now I'm smokin' into Texas with the hammer down And a-rockin' little combo from the Guitar Town Hey pretty baby don't you know it ain't my fault I love to hear the steel belts hummin' on the asphalt Wake up in the middle of the night in a truck stop Stumble in the restaurant wonderin' why I don't stop Gotta keep rockin' why I still can I gotta two pack habit and a motel tan But when my boots hit the boards I'm a brand new man With my back to the riser, I make my stand And hey pretty baby won't you hold me tight We're loadin' up and rollin' out of here tonight One of these days I'm gonna settle down And take you back with me to the Guitar Town
This one from Steve is a great toe-tapper and for the snappy lyrics and twangy lead guitar, I would bump the rating up to around 8.8. He hit national prominence around the same time as Garth Brooks and Randy Travis in the late 80's with a more pronounced rock approach to his country sound. Another fine reaction, rating, Don and keep rockin' dat country.
Hey, my guy, this live version is cool and all but ya really gotta check out the original music video that played on CMT back in the day upon this release. It sounds 10 X better. That electric guitar kicks on that cool riff and the vocals just fu***ng rock. Very cool pick. Thanks dude.
Hey Don, can you react to" Don't you think this outlaw but has done got out of hand" by the great late Waylon Jennings? I would really enjoy hearing your take on this song, thanks
You gotta get some more Gary Allan songs to react to. As you stated when you did the two other songs of his, you liked him, rated him high with an 8.8 and a 9.0, and thought of Frankie Ballard. You know he has some deep lyrics, a great voice, and killer instrumentation, so give him another go-round for a reaction. I suggest "No Regrets", which deals with his wife's suicide and him finally getting over the grief and coming to terms with it. I also recommend "Life Ain't Always Beautiful" and "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", those songs have been reacted to by others, but no one seems to have reacted to "Watching Airplanes", "Smoke Rings In The Dark", and "Today". Every song of his is great, I don't think he had written and sung anything you wouldn't like.
Hi Could you react to i can still make Cheyenne by George strait and could you also react to saltwater joys please i live in Newfoundland and the song really means alot to me and i would love to see someone react to it and say what they think
: "Well, I gotta keep rocking while I still can, I got a two-pack habit and a motel tan" YESSSSS
still remember this playing on the radio in the mid 80's. released March 5, 1986
Guitar Town came out my senior year of high school. This was my jam all that summer!
Nashville is "Guitar Town". This was Steve's first charted single and off his first album. I will still pop the CD in and listen to all the way through. He did good go far on "$35 and a Jap guitar"!!
I fell in love with Steve first time I heard it ❤ he had so much energy and the sweetest person to entertaiment he had fun
Steve Earle is one of my favorites. His song "Someday" should be your next Steve Earle reaction.
Finally someone is reacting to Steve Earle!! I love him- I saw him in concert and he was great!! Thank you!! More SE!!
I love Steve Earle! Twenty years ago, I was working as a legal secretary in Wichita, Kansas. One day I took my boss to the airport and he noticed my Steve Earle CD in my car. We bonded over our mutual love of Steve.
Great song. I have always loved the music in this.
I always loved his music

Jeeze he's a baby in this video! Still put still puts on a hell of a show.
I used to listen to the Guitar Town album all the time. Hillbilly Highway, Someday, Good ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough), lots of good songs on that.
Awwww, love Steve Earle❤❤❤. Have you ever heard of "Leadfoot" by Billy Strings, it is amazing!
Loving his" Fonzie" rolled sleeve, white T-shirt lol
One of the last great singer/songwriters.
What I love about this version is his shout-out to Hank Williams..not just The Lost Highway reference but the way he swooped when he sang calling my N-ame one day.

Ashes to Ashes, on Jerusalem is my favorite of all of his songs.

he wrote a song about townes van zandt called fort worth blues that is one of my favorites. i recommend it to anyone who isn't familiar with it.
Steve Earle is great. #Decarcerate #Peace #Nonviolence #FreeSpeech #EattheRich
1986. 30 Million views on RUclips. Unbelievable.
Someday by Steve Earle!
Lost my comment.

He's from Schretz Texas. Bon in Virginia left as a baby
Lyrics:
Hey pretty baby are you ready for me
It's your good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee
I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone
With the radio blastin' and the bird dog on
There's a speed trap up ahead in Selma Town
But no local yokel gonna shut me down
'Cause me and my boys got this rig unwound
And we've come a thousand miles from a Guitar Town
Nothin' ever happened 'round my hometown
And I ain't the kind to just hang around
But I heard someone callin' my name one day
And I followed that voice down the lost highway
Everybody told me you can't get far
On thirty-seven dollars and a jap guitar
Now I'm smokin' into Texas with the hammer down
And a-rockin' little combo from the Guitar Town
Hey pretty baby don't you know it ain't my fault
I love to hear the steel belts hummin' on the asphalt
Wake up in the middle of the night in a truck stop
Stumble in the restaurant wonderin' why I don't stop
Gotta keep rockin' why I still can
I gotta two pack habit and a motel tan
But when my boots hit the boards I'm a brand new man
With my back to the riser, I make my stand
And hey pretty baby won't you hold me tight
We're loadin' up and rollin' out of here tonight
One of these days I'm gonna settle down
And take you back with me to the Guitar Town
The clothes and the dance and the gravelly voice, dude was the country version of Bruce Springsteen here.
Steve Earle is out of the Johnny Cash mold. 🔥

Look into “The Long Haul” or “Six Years Come September” off of American Aquarium’s new album! Keep up the great work!
Read Steve's book.
If you haven't done it yet, please review Sweet Amarillo by Old Crow Medicine Show
Hillbilly Highway is a good one too.
Tom Ames’ Prayer is a great song.
REK's version is pretty darn good too!

10x better than any of the garbage Nashville vomits out today
he broke ground for a lot of performers that had no place in country music at the time as did Shania Twain
Hi Could you react to i can still make Cheyenne by George strait and could you also react to saltwater joys please i live in Newfoundland and the song really means alot to me and i would love to see someone react to it and say what they think
Alrighty Don, now you gotta take Steve Earl and his song and mash it with Benjamin Tod and do The Mountain. Another coal mining heartbreak song.
