What It Takes To Fly The $21 Million Goodyear Blimp

- We took a ride on the world-famous Goodyear Blimp as it flew above the Daytona International Speedway where it provided aerial coverage for NASCAR in February. Our journey began at the Blimp Base in Pompano Beach, Florida - from there, the Blimp flew 200 miles north to a small airport in New Smyrna, where it would call home for the weekend.
We got to spend about five hours in the Blimp, which was updated in 2014 in collaboration with the Zeppelin company. The new model isn't technically a Blimp, due to the internal structure inside its balloon, or envelope.
This is what it's like to fly on the iconic Goodyear Blimp, which isn't accessible to the public - only the crew and invited guests are allowed to go for a ride.

acydic. I though they flew in the rudder or very tip
Yall honestly stupid while kids
I still believed that until today .
My dad had a tire shop in the 70s...he was a big Goodyear dealer... pretty much exclusive. He was given tickets to fly on the blimp when it came to our city. For some reason, I was the only one to go up, not even my parents were with me. So we go up and I was invited to go up next to the pilot. It was quite cool but as a kid I didn't get the gravity of it. So there was this big wheel like a wheel on a ship between the two front seats...I asked if I could move it. He had his hand on it and said " yes , just very slow forward " ...well being 7 years old I reefed on it back and fourth...not a good idea evidently , I was sternly told to go back to my seat lol "...I still have my ticket.
So, about 34 years latter ( 2014 ) my dad passed away from prostate cancer. My parents have a big piece of land and the following spring I was helping my mom with the garden...so we hear this brrrrrr...and here comes the Goodyear blimp. We hadn't seen it in our town for years and years. It gets closer and closer and is coming right in our direction. So veers off , turns sideways and comes in REAL low. Freakishly low. It goes by with the light up sign flashing " Goodyear " ...we were crying. We know someone high up remembered my dad. He was a good tire dealer ...did all the city fire, cops, regular city vehicles, contracts with local mills etc. So I can only think they remembered him and did a flyby. Their house isn't even in the city so they had to go out of the way to do this. It hadn't been in our town since the late 90s so...it had to be planned.
Thank you Goodyear !
That’s incredible
Great story

@@ReelsCW in 1990, my girlfriends Dad was a Vice President of marketing for a big grocery chain in San Francisco. Somehow, he was able to get my gf and I a ride on the Goodyear Blimp. It was crazy, the crew and us passengers were in a cockpit the size of a motor home. We could talk to the pilot from our seats. He flew us over the Oakland Collisium and dipped us down low over it. One of the coolest things I’ve ever done. They gave us signed cards that said we had flown in the blimp.

In the '80s when I was in high school, there was a Goodyear Blimp based right across the freeway from our school. I was on the yearbook staff and we requested a ride to photograph the campus from above. Goodyear was happy to oblige. When it was our turn, they put me in the co-pilot seat. We flew around, I took pictures, and then the pilot asked if I wanted to fly it. This was an older model with pedals for the rudders and a big wheel beside each seat for elevators. I'll never forget that day. For a few minutes, I got to fly the Goodyear blimp.

That’s a big improvement from the previous generation blimps. I had an opportunity to look inside the cockpit of the older model and I was shocked at how small it was.

@@onewordhereonewordthere6975 Those are rigid airships, meaning that they can fit things inside the "balloon" due to using internal gas bags. A blimp or semi-rigid just could not do that, limiting internal capacity to just the cockpit.

Wow, the new "Blimps" are a far cry from the old GZ-20's that were in service when I worked for Goodyear Canada Inc. The old versions were only 192 feet long, had hardly any passenger capacity, and were much less tech oriented, but they were fun to fly. As an employee I had the opportunity to fly in them on 3 occasions, and actually took control of the craft for several minutes on one of the flights, and have a certificate of provenance that made me an honorary Blimp Pilot.

Was poking around through the cobwebs on my bookshelf last night and pulled a small hardback from one of the dusty layers. Instantly a rush of joy filled my mind. It was Dr. Paul Litchfield's "Why Has America No Rigid Airship?" Few corporations have a sense of vision, or especially a sense of national vision. Perhaps nowadays vision is considered a costly luxury, hardly justifiable. But by the mid 20th century, after people had mostly given up on big rigid airships as a good (transportation industry) idea, Goodyear CEO Dr. Litchfield remained fast to his personal vision. In my mind, his vision is legendary. Thank you so much, Goodyear, for keeping that lighter-than-air idea up and going.

Hello, and Thank you, for such a Great and Informative Video Tour. While on vacation in Florida, in 1958, the general public was allowed to ride on the Goodyear Blimp. I believe then, the cost was around $5.00 to $10.00. The wind was quite gusty, on that day, so flights were cancelled. At least I was able to view the blimp, at a fairly close distance of a few hundred feet! Thanks again.
I throughly enjoyed this video! When I was a child, if the Goodyear was spotted, my mother would load me and my sister into the car to chase it. Literally! She would hop curbs, go off road in our '70 Chevelle. She would only stop when trees, or a fence blocked our passage, or until the muffler was ripped off the car! This happened numerous times throughout our childhood! Good times!
They brought the Good Year Blimp Wednesday night to Tupelo, Mississippi. They own Cooper Tire which was hit months ago. They brought the blimp to show the appreciation for the hard work that the employees did to try to get back on track. It was amazing watching this in person. After work I drove about 30 minutes just to watch it and be able to record my own videos of it. I knew they came from Florida because I saw the tag on one of the maintenance vehicles.
I live in Orlando and I remember walking outside my house a few years ago and seeing that in the sky!
I remember falling in love with Blimps back in 2003. At the National Museum of the USAF in Ohio, 4 Blimps came to fly together to celebrate 100 years of flight! The four Blimps were the Goodyear blimp, Saturn Blimp, MetLife Blimp, and the Fuji Film blimp.
And my love for this particular Goodyear "Airship" in the video began in 2015 when it visited Oshkosh, WI during EAA AirVenture!

In 1978, the Goodyear Blimp was selling rides on it for $15.00! As I was on vacation in Miami,
I went to the Blimp base to ride on it! Unfortunately, when I got there & the blimp was right
