SpaceX just rocked the world with the ground breaking second integrated flight test a week ago, but since then, an absolute mountain of great information has been thrown out pretty much daily. SpaceX Starship to Launch again when!? Musk has his optimistic timelines when the hardware for flight 3 will be ready, but how true could that be? You might be surprised, because this is nuts!

7:22 As far as I remember they said last time that it was not intended to have an angle already at the start. Or maybe they changed it now? Plus I'm not sure it is much safer. Wouldn't be the plume even more pointed to the tower in this case?

A big shoutout to @MarcusHouse for passing two big numerical milestones this week! I’m a 66 year-old space enthusiast from Florida, who can still remember the excitement of the Project Mercury launches. Nowadays, my Saturday morning would be incomplete if not for a cheery “Hey hey!” to kick off my weekend. Thank you so much for what you do! I love your little corner of the internet.

Hey Skip ... Same great memories here of the good old days including a highly detailed model that I constructed of one of the Mercury capsules. Wish I still had it but it experienced a "Rapidly Unscheduled Destruction" due to hard play and an over active imagination fueled by whatever candy we had at hand!
You're absolutely correct that Marcus and his team do such a great job with their coverage and his endless enthusiasm for space. His "Hey Hey" greeting takes me back to the 1960's when the phrase "Excitement Guaranteed" really meant something to an eight year old kid.
Keep it coming Marcus and congrats on your viewership milestones! -- Dave L

I think your take is a little too broad.
Quick iterations that fail fast only make sense if the cost of the iterations don’t bankrupt you. In pure software development for example, iteration times are fast and you generally don’t consume physical resources every time you fail making iterations incredibly cheap. It would be foolish not to fail fast and put out minimum viable products. In firmware development, the firmware written is tied to the lifecycle of physical hardware, and producing hardware is not cheap so it is more difficult to “fail fast” in this scenario.
Producing rockets puts you further on the spectrum of “it’s not cheap” as each individual rocket costs millions upon millions of dollars to produce. Once you consider the fact that to get such a system working properly you need to integrate 100’s to thousands of components from many dozens of teams, and the task to get a working rocket becomes very daunting. The engineers likely do everything in their power to make sure each submodule of the system has been tested independently prior to the real deal precisely to mitigate unnecessary waste.
My point is that I think the “fail fast” mantra of spaceX should be caveated as “fail fast for rocket development”.

One side of the mount was burned more than the other because it took off at a slight tilt. At least, that's what I think. I have no way of proving that. It is also why I don't understand the speculation that they do that on purpose to protect the tower. That angle points the world's most powerful blowtorch closer to the tower. Not only does it burn one side of the mount but it sets one of the arms on fire for a split second. So, how does the tilt help protect anything?

    • @dfiler2
      @dfiler2 6 месяцев назад

I was wondering this too. Also, that side of the launch mount houses more equipment. I forget the name of that armored box on the tower side but it seems to be getting torched extra due to the tilt.
Perhaps the tilt helps prevent crashing into the tower if tower-side boosters fail to ignite or fail before clearing the tower. In that scenario, the tilt could keep the rocket headed vertically despite asymmetric thrust. That seems logical but is complete conjecture on my part.

What a great week for SpaceX, thanks for compling another comprehensive review.. and yes the florida live footage was stunning.. I wouldn't mind betting SpaceX would like more of that calibre footage for the next flight. Re the new dish, I'm not convinced it's due to the number of satellites, I suspect they have greater RF steering.. i.e. each antenna segment can tune over a greater phase range, which results in a wider tuning angle range, which in turn makes it much less sensitive to installation position, that's harder to design, but once done, makes all installations trivial. If it were due to higher number of satellites, the old dishes would be benefitting too, maybe they do, but I haven't heard of any alignment relaxations. (I'm a radio electronics R&D engineer)

We keep on hearing about this “wonderful data collection” but each test involving this project has ended with catastrophic failures and proof that it’s just an unreliable vehicle. The booster keeps exploding and the starship itself keeps on crashing or blowing up. I think it’s time they scrapped this thing. You see how the team keeps on mechanically cheering in all the videos? That’s because they’re being told by the hire ups to cheer no matter what the outcome. Classic sales technique. You know what SpaceX could do that might be useful?
Set up a cheap, floating triangle adrift out on the Gulf of Mexico at the place where the Booster is supposed to return to. Such floating triangle having a hole in the middle that appropriately mimics the Chopsticks dimensions when the Booster returns.
That way, when the Booster is setting down upon the ocean, it could try and squeeze into the triangle and touch those grid fins on the sides of the triangle, so as to prove that the Booster could hit its grid fins on the Stage Zero like it's supposed to.

Spacex had one hell of a year and they need StarShip 2 off for the data. I see as like car engine tuning, your not going to know how the engine/rocket behaves without tests. I'm sure test launch 3 will close to perfect as they can get. I suspect they will get to at least 5 total test flights to dial this thing in before payload tests. Go SPaceX!

The new Starlink dish is a phased array like the old ones. If you make the dish larger you also increase the ability to steer the signal. A larger dish with no moving parts should be more reliable aside from being cheaper. Plus it can instantly change it's aim where as the old dish had to physically shift it's angle to pick up different sats. So the performance of the new dish should much higher with fewer dropouts.

Yes, it is part of the engineering maxim "never do something mechanically if you can do it electronically", metal being a lot more costly and difficult to manipulate than electrons.

so the dish I have has a phased array antenna...it literally never moves after setup. it only moves to optimize angle, then its done.@@kenoliver8913

The fact that nose cone remained intact after the self destruct charges bodes well for a design of a crew-only Starship with a detachable nose or tiny B-58-style ejection capsules with individual heat shields and recovery parachutes.
I definitely think such a vehicle will be designed to meet NASA manned spacecraft requirements when SpaceX wants to launch more crew and passengers and will retire Dragon 2.

The starship is amazing - the sheer massive scale of it all - and to me, this is all a reflection of Elon's mind, a mind that thinks on massive, extended scales where almost nothing is impossible. If we think about it, none of this would be happening if there was no Elon Musk on Earth. What a unique and gifted mind!

Let me remind you of tesla solar tiles, the lie detector test determined that was a scam. The tesla roadster, which customers had to pay up front 250,000 usd 6 or 7 years ago, that was a scam, hyperloop, that was a scam to kill any money going toward a California rail line, the Vegas loop, that was a scam. Full autonomous self-driving, that was a scam. Neurolink - also known as the monkey torture factory, that is a scam. Tesla semi, you guess it, scam. Cyber truck, which took money from investors 6 years ago and is now rolling out TEN units (I bet to tesla employees), scam. Elons blatant stock and crypto manipulation, scam. Tesla bot, which can do nothing more than walk in a straight line across a flat surface while Boston dynamics robots have been doing back flips and manual labor for a decade. Space x, the unprofitable rocket company celebrating a "reusable" rocket that constantly explodes. Oh but he makes luxury ev cars for well-off people using child slave labor in Africa. We should all kiss the ground he walks on. No thanks. Billionaires are not your friend. He does not care about you. He has no interest in helping humanity. Stop worshipping him.
