      MN12DOTNET There you go. whatever works man. I might get a older xw series for a file server. you can get those super cheap amd I already have a couple 3.0Ghz quad core Xeons to put in it.

    I'm probably off topic on your video, but my Z820 died as a result of the cable harnesses insulation cracking, and shorting to chassis. This is most at risk with the main power connector (to the MB) as there is a sharp bend here leaving exposed cables right next to lots of metal surrounding! I also foung that the connectors (that PSU sits into) these wiring harnesses also had cracked
    cable insulation(s) You can see these cables by removing the opposite cover plate. Although probably not so much of a risk of a short circuit here, but i was surprised to find all the cable insulations cracked exposing the wiring. Despite going over everything I wasn't able to get the PC to work. I decided that the MB must have died? Was only when I remove it I discoverd the
    broken exposed cables, esp. at the MP connector! BTW with reference to why they put HEX screws on the CPU's they reckon that this is not a DIY job, and you must bring it to a tech - who has the magic removal tool!

      @ducter2001 Good to know, my PSU went out on mine. I still want to use it as a server even though since this I built a gaming PC. I'll pull the motherboard before I replace the PSU and check everything out.

    Very nice system. I did have a Intel Skull Trail rig, Dual QX9775 with 8GB of RAM. It was a monster that need a lot of fans, made a lot of noise, and consumed a lot of power. I've since built a new Silver Lake i5 rig but miss my Skulltrail, which has been donated to my younger brother.

      Sounds great. I might well get one myself, and see what it's like. The sounds of the cooling in my Skull trail system was a little loud. I've since bought an i5 Skylake system, and wondering if your rig is more powerful than Skylake.

      Thats why all the compartments are seperated on the Z800. Stays nice and cool. Never had a problem with heat, even when I was running it as a folding machine. It would run the cpus around 90 percent and the gpu around 80 percent all day.

    I know this is old, but still these are great machines for the money once they are off lease they can be purchased for a fraction of the original cost. I purchased the Z620 it came with two E5-2650v2 8 core CPU's one SSD and one iTB HDD plus 96 gb of ECC ram. It also has Win 10 Pro for about 600 dollars. You can upgrade it from there to have 2 E5-2697v2 12 core CPU's and 784 or 786GB of Ram I just can't quite remember what the max is. The next one I get off lease will be a Z8 with 3TB of ram and two 28 core Xeon's but that may be a while as they are still very new. Give it 5 years and it will be the same cost. I love getting high end enterprise gear for cheap. Also p/u a Dell Poweredge T620 Server with dual V2 Xeons as well. That one will run Free Nas. The Z620 is used to do WU's for World Community Grid for cancer research. Love to use my machines for a worthy purpose.

    Excellent! On your earlier video, you rendered out this 24 min video in about 17 min when using Media Encoder. How fast is the rendering using this new setup?
    For video rendering, which is faster, the GTX 970 or Quadros?
    Thanks.

    • @TheEdge008
      @TheEdge008 9 лет назад

      +TheEdge008 My bad, I wanted a comparison of rendering speed when using the old processors vs. the new ones on the workstation.

    • @Notsosamurai1
      @Notsosamurai1  9 лет назад +1

      +TheEdge008 When it comes to rendering video like gaming or 3d rendering it uses your graphics card, and for me it is not cost effective to use the newer quadro cards vs the GTX because of the price. To encode video like in my video it mainly uses your processor/processors. With the original 2.67GHz processors it took about 12 to 14 minutes to encode a 10 minute 1080p video that was 30fps and rendered at the highest quality. With the new processors that are 3.2GHz it takes 6 to 8 minutes for the same video.

  • @samsen201

    Good job. I am thinking of buying an old workstation HP for graphic intensive work (Not gaming). Is there any significant differences between Z600 (That I am considering buying) or Z800? On the same topic, what about the newer versions Z620 / Z820? Are they very much superior? The price difference could be slight, depending on what is offered for sale so do I need to be picky on the newer versions or any other spects such as CPU type or amount of RAM that they ship with?

    • @Notsosamurai1
      @Notsosamurai1  7 лет назад +1

      The difference in the Z600 vs the Z800 is space inside for drives and extra stuff. I believe it doesn't have as many pci slots and memory slots also. Yes the Z620/820 is superior because of the newer processors and SATA 3, but they are also still expensive and the processors for them are really expensive still. Thats the only reason I didn't get one. The Z800 is still very powerful compared to a normal single cpu desktop and is really cheap.

      I just found it. It's called rainmeter. It's a program that gives you different widgets to monitor performance and temps. I just use CPUID and select the option to show the temp and CPU usage in the notification area now. Not as cool but it works on my main pc and laptop without taking up a bunch of my screen on my laptop.

    Good vid. Just ran across one of these and thinking about getting my paws on it and doing some tweaking.
    What wattage is your power supply? I think these base out with 850 watts but had some higher wattage options.
    -Also, what do you think about graphics card upgrades? I think there are two free 6 pin connectors for GPU on this?-
    Edit: Just saw your vid of you adding the 970. Thanks!

      @Notsosamurai1  7 лет назад

      SirtubalotTX They have 2 options for the PSU. 850 watt and 1100 watt. I have the 1100 watt. You need the 1100 watt for 2 high watt processors and more then one high wattage graphics card.

    • @SirtubalotTX
      @SirtubalotTX 7 лет назад

      Not So Samurai Thanks for the reply. Do you think two X5690s would run ok with an 850 watt as long as there's no heavy GPU? I have those CPUs on the way and was hoping that I could put off getting the 1150 watt until I put the bigger GPU in. Will be running a 750ti until then. The 750ti I have has no power connections whatsoever and runs entirely off the PCIe bus.

    I know that this isn't a CPU question, but you seem to know a lot about the HP z800. I have one and just tried to install two WD Black 6TB hard drives in the 3rd and 4th bays. It will only give me 1.5 TB each. I changed the initialization to gpt but that didn't change anything. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    • @Notsosamurai1

      It should work fine as ling as you are not trying to raid them. I had a 4TB drive in mine by it self. Do you have the bays connected to the SATA or SAS controller? Also go into your bios and make sure its not in RAID mode. After that then go into your disk management in windows and see if the extra space is available as unallocated space.

    hi there. i just acquired a z800 and looking to upgrade the memory to 48GB ram for editing. the ram im looking at is the Crucial 4GB 240pin PC3 - 12800. will this work? also i have quadro 600 graphics card, are the new GTX1080s compatible with the z800? thanks!

      Yes a GTX1080 shoulsd work just like my 970. I would get the proper memory for it. It uses ECC memory. You can get it pretty cheap on ebay from re sellers. I got registered ECC memory.

      I have not hear of that or checked it when it starts up, but I do know the motherboard revisions. Bases one the serial numbers they always end in 001, 002, or 003. Those are revision 1, 2 and 3. Revision 1 and 2 only support the 5500 Xeons and the revision 3 supports the 5500 and the 5600. Its a proprietary hot swappable PSU. Look up some videos on the Z800. There are some down sides to it but there are a lot of up side to it also. You can swap out the power supply in second if it goes bad. Although it will probably never go bad because its built like a tank.

These CPU's are locked however the older gen Xeons are not, but some are. I found a list somewhere that showed which ones were unlocked.
