"Dad, I need a water cooling system because the CNC machine I use to shred metal for things I'm manufacturing is getting too hot, also we'll need to run a 240v line because the whole setup isn't getting enough power." a single tear of joy and pride would run down my eye if my hypothetical child said that to me and would do my best to make that happen, if it were in my power to do so. Two years before there wasn't much detail about this, i struggled to upgrade FYI,The stiffness of the linear rods are not sufficient for cutting, i added linear ball rail , designed bracket myself and printed Well presented detailed content, keep the good work

You and your brother are incredibly capable and smart kids. Just an observation on your video and someone may have pointed it out already, but your safety is number one. Always use tabs for profile cuts as some hold-downs such as double-sided tape or CA glue on blue tape might not be sufficient enough, especially when aluminum gets heated during the milling. That part that flew off was very scary and could cause some serious injuries. I know you put your CNC in the enclosure but that one didn't seems to be in the enclosure or at least it didn't look like it. Please be safe.

Hello! It actually depends on what kind of CNC / spindle. For this kind of low-priced spindle, you get more torque at higher RPMs. But, on a more expensive CNC, the constant-torque spindle can maintain the same torque at different RPM. Thanks for watching! :D You can try Googling "Why does the torque curve drop off at low RPM" and you will probably find some better explanations.
tbh it looks worse then my stock spindle ... (agreed i saw way worse cuts on other 3018s but still..) btw for everyone wanting an cheap and easy upgrade, the spindle is not the problem on these mashines... well, it kinda is but not the power but rather the floppieness of the connected ER11 chuck. take a fitting ball bearing onto the shaft of the ER11 collet, print a part that holds the bearing as stiff as possible to the motor and see how much it improved. PS. for everyone wondering, i tested, well.. rather experienced that aluminum is no problem for the spindle motor even with a 5mm DOC @ 100mm/min and even V4A steel worked for the motor... main problem there was the overall stiffness of the mashine but the motor had no problem with 2mm DOC @ 60mm/min (granted it looked and heard horrible due to missing stiffness in frame and coupling to ER collet but it did cut the pipe in one go ....)
Fantastic video !!! At the end of this video you mentioned that you will be producing a video demonstrating the addition of a probe sensor to provide the exact location of the stock you are cutting. Please provide the link to this and other videos which demonstrate or explain the use of a probe sensor and 3018 class of desktop CNC machines. I look forward to seeing your next video. I have not had my 3018 for long and it's interesting to see what it can do with some upgrades. I think I will need fusion 360 as at the moment I am trying freecad but it is very hard to learn. Excellent video again and thank you for sharing.
One thing to be careful of once you get used to a CAD tool you'll end up sticking with it like glue so choose wisely. I use 360 it's fairly intuitive it can be a little buggy so make sure you save a design early on it has auto save but it only works after you've saved for the first time nothing worse than losing hours of work because you forgot to do a first save, like I say it's great but it's also tied to a company so they could change the license rules anytime they like. Free CAD is definitely less intuitive but no-one can just change the license rules on you.
Thanks for the advice I have been caught out by autosave? before. I will probably have to return the 3018 as the fan on the laser is faulty and makes the squeal that fans do when the bearings are shot, the seller thinks that it is normal! so I will have to get ebay to step in. The laser has not done more than 2 hours and if the fan won't keep it cool it will fail.
@@thingys-rd7id never really used a laser if I was going to get one I'd probably go all out and get a tube laser as I'd be more interested in cutting than etching if only I had the space for one.
Very helpful video. I did the same upgrade early this year, but I didn't upgrade to a bigger stepper motor. I read the control module manual and it mentions something like: "the maximum motor currents for the stepper motors used must first be set on the control module using the appropriate miniature potentiometers" and I was afraid that I had to make changes on the control module and I am not savvy when it comes to that. Is it necessary to make changes to the control module when you upgraded to a Nema 17 40-48? Can't wait to see your next video about the limit switches and the probe. Thanks.
Hello great video. I upgraded the stepper to the larger stepper motor but now it just shakes and I have to reset the machine. Its as though it needs more current. The smaller steppers still work first but this new one almost causes over current

I literally bumped into your video and love it, I've watched it several times. I have a question about connecting the E-Stop and Relay - I can't see exactly how you connected those - can you please share which end of the Relay you connected with the E-Stop and which to the power supply and which posts you used - please??? Thank you in advance and keep up the great work...ml Colorado btw: my son-in-law is an electrical engineer who is going to help me come up with a way to connect the spindle through the Grbl Controller so that the software (Grbl Control Candle) can control spindle speed - when I figure that out I'll share it with you if you're interested.
need to hook up a blow Nozzle to push those chips away, of cores a better option would be cutting fluid nozzle which you would want to use a non conductive cutting oil, and run it at a high enough pressure to push the chips away from your work piece.. this will improve the accuracy and over all look and quality of your end product, will also extend the life of your end mills and spindle by them having to work less to cut
Hello. I have been searching for days to find a definitive answer to which terminal is hot or live and which is neutral. I've read a debate about it doesn't really matter. That was in comments for one of the only videos where the author actually used correctly colored wires (for UK). He identified the terminal on the right as the hot (brown) and left as neutral (blue). That is opposite of how you have it. Any thoughts on who is correct? After watching your video, I am inclined to believe you know better than the old man who made the other video. Your video is possibly the most awesome I have ever seen on youtube. I will be watching every video you have made!

Yes I want to get that Mill, I use F360 already for 3D Print parts and I have a Cr 10S Pro V1 printer I have many of the same tools you do. Now I need that Mill. I need to make train parts for Motor Mounts and Steam Engine Linkage. I wonder if Aluminum can be Polished and buffed to shine then sealed to stay shiny? The Linkage is only 2 or 3 mm thick. Will it be stiff enough as these main linkages are used to drive all the wheels. If I sent you a part can you assess the process to make it for a Project, If I help pay for your time???? Dennis
You should be able to cut copper brass might be challenging though. I've looked at this machine before but always thought it was just to weak for any serious usage with after this video though I'll definitely be building one.

Hi, the 0-48v terminal on your board is a MOSFET which works the same as the relay in my video. Since my board doesn't come with an extra MOSFET like yours, I have to add a relay to control the external power supply. But I am not sure that 0-48V terminal is OK to control the 110V power supply, or you can consider a brushless 500w spindle which cost more, but make less noise and uses a 48V power supply. amzn.to/3yna7TD

Great Video - I bought the Comgrow . Updating to the 500 watt spindle and relay that you suggested. What are the three wires that are going into the input of the relay. I have the two that came from the spindle. The green light on the relay comes on when I give the start spindle command but does not trigger the relay. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
The green light is ON means the signal line to the relay is connected correctly from the motherboard 24V terminal. Please check the power supply and the spindle and see if it connects to the relay correctly: 1. The positive of the spindle and the positive of the power supply are connected directly. 2. The negative of both spindle and power supply connect to the relay, when the signal is triggered, the relay will connect them together. You can also watch and pause at 8:24 of this video for wiring, if you don't have the emergency button, just ignore it and consider that is the spindle.

I have a bunch of aluminum parts I am making, I wanna upgrade my CNC that is a 3018 Prover extended to 3040, this is a great looking upgrade, how does it compare to the off the shelf versions that sainsmart offers? I wonder because I cant 3d print a fan or spindle retainer/mount.
I don't have a sainsmart 3018 CNC, but it just look the same as those cheaper 3018 CNC from eBay or AliExpress with the same 60w 775 spindle, the same frame, and the same design. So I can't tell the difference between a sainsmart and an unbranded CNC 3018 machine at all.

I love your presentation - you guys are great. I had bought the same 500 w Spindle upgrade to my 3018 Pro and was searching for some help on RUclips for the installation. I literally bumped into your video and love it, I've watched it several times. I have a question about connecting the E-Stop and Relay - I can't see exactly how you connected those - can you please share which end of the Relay you connected with the E-Stop and which to the power supply and which posts you used - please??? Thank you in advance and keep up the great work...ml Colorado btw: my son-in-law is an electrical engineer who is going to help me come up with a way to connect the spindle through the Grbl Controller so that the software (Grbl Control Candle) can control spindle speed - when I figure that out I'll share it with you if you're interested.
need to hook up a blow Nozzle to push those chips away, of cores a better option would be cutting fluid nozzle which you would want to use a non conductive cutting oil, and run it at a high enough pressure to push the chips away from your work piece.. this will improve the accuracy and over all look and quality of your end product, will also extend the life of your end mills and spindle by them having to work less to cut
Hello. I have been searching for days to find a definitive answer to which terminal is hot or live and which is neutral. I've read a debate about it doesn't really matter. That was in comments for one of the only videos where the author actually used correctly colored wires (for UK). He identified the terminal on the right as the hot (brown) and left as neutral (blue). That is opposite of how you have it. Any thoughts on who is correct?

I really like your channel. So now it's no longer a 149$ cnc. Cnc 149$+limit switch 6$+spindle motor and power supply 100$+nema motor 14$+spacers 4.5$+power cord 4$+ Bearings 10$+screws 10$+tnuts 8$+wire 7$+24v relay 6$+end stop buttons 2x4$=327$. For enclosure mdf 2x6$+led 18.5$+acrylic 46$+magnetic tape 14$+corner brackets 27$+ aluminum extrusion 80$=197.5$. Total 327$ +197.5$=525$ minimum more transport of the different parts, reinforcement of the X axis, laser etc, etc... $$$

I would like to ask you another brief query regarding the above, and it is that I have acquired another nema, which has two axes for the purpose of adapting a manual knob, "Nema 17 stepper motor, double axis, 48mm, 17HS8401S, 1.8 TO". but this one doesn't work. a greeting.

Yes I want to get that Mill, I use F360 already for 3D Print parts and I have a Cr 10S Pro V1 printer I have many of the same tools you do. Now I need that Mill. I need to make train parts for Motor Mounts and Steam Engine Linkage. I wonder if Aluminum can be Polished and buffed to shine then sealed to stay shiny? The Linkage is only 2 or 3 mm thick. Will it be stiff enough as these main linkages are used to drive all the wheels. If I sent you a part can you assess the process to make it for a Project, If I help pay for your time???? Dennis

You should be able to cut copper brass might be challenging though. I've looked at this machine before but always thought it was just to weak for any serious usage with after this video though I'll definitely be building one.

Hi, the 0-48v terminal on your board is a MOSFET which works the same as the relay in my video. Since my board doesn't come with an extra MOSFET like yours, I have to add a relay to control the external power supply. But I am not sure that 0-48V terminal is OK to control the 110V power supply, or you can consider a brushless 500w spindle which cost more, but make less noise and uses a 48V power supply.

Great Video - I bought the Comgrow . Updating to the 500 watt spindle and relay that you suggested. What are the three wires that are going into the input of the relay. I have the two that came from the spindle. The green light on the relay comes on when I give the start spindle command but does not trigger the relay. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
The green light is ON means the signal line to the relay is connected correctly from the motherboard 24V terminal. Please check the power supply and the spindle and see if it connects to the relay correctly:
1. The positive of the spindle and the positive of the power supply are connected directly.
2. The negative of both spindle and power supply connect to the relay, when the signal is triggered, the relay will connect them together.
You can also watch and pause at 8:24 of this video for wiring, if you don't have the emergency button, just ignore it and consider that is the spindle.

I have a bunch of aluminum parts I am making, I wanna upgrade my CNC that is a 3018 Prover extended to 3040, this is a great looking upgrade, how does it compare to the off the shelf versions that sainsmart offers? I wonder because I cant 3d print a fan or spindle retainer/mount.
I don't have a sainsmart 3018 CNC, but it just look the same as those cheaper 3018 CNC from eBay or AliExpress with the same 60w 775 spindle, the same frame, and the same design. So I can't tell the difference between a sainsmart and an unbranded CNC 3018 machine at all.
