It's different when you get to watch them on your own terms, for your own reasons. We mostly hate them because they're invasive, boring, and blocking us from doing the things we actually want to be doing, but when it's a group viewing of ads with discussion, they get to be short films about commercialism, rather than commercials.
I had the Tyco Tantrum and the Tyco Rebound as a kid (they're probably still be buried in my closet somewhere), they were actually insanely durable for RC cars because they were forged in the era of Nintendium. Like, you could literally drive them down a flight of stairs onto concrete and they'd just keep on driving. They even sold extra wall chargers so you could just keep swapping out batteries and putting them through hell, they were great toys

No, Robocop is not a children's movie. It's a hard-R rated movie, but it's easy to see how attractive the idea and look of Robocop was to kids. It's only natural that they made a cartoon for kids on which to base the toys. I had the toys and watched the cartoon as a kid and loved them. I finally saw the movie in a heavily-edited TV cut a couple years later.
Vinny already pointed out that _Robocop_ is not a children's movie due to the graphic, over-the-top violence and disturbing imagery. Same can be said with other films like _Rambo_ and _Toxic Avengers_ being targeted for younger demographics, despite what the R ratings warned about. The idea of R-Rated films were profitable enough to get their own toys back in the 80s is something else, but at least it worked.

Thus they created kid-friendly versions. Now, the T2: Judgment Day was based directly on the movie. Of course, the movie was a very soft-R, could have been PG-13 with a couple minor edits. The Aliens line seemed to be based directly on the movie, but it was actually intended to be based on an Aliens cartoon series that was cancelled. However, there was a Micro Machines playset based directly on the first Alien film. It even had a graphic depiction of the chestburster scene on the box.
