Sometimes I think Angelina sounds best with just an instrument or two behind her so that your full attention is on her voice. Then I'll watch one where she's in front of a really good jazz band and see how she masters that situation, too. In one concert, she's about 200 feet in front of the stage, in the middle of the audience, backed by a full band and chorus on the stage and she's on top of them like a shepherd with a flock. Cool as a cucumber. She's simply astonishing.
One thing about Angelina is that she never quickens the pace. If you want to see her slide notes you should react to her singing "What a difference a day makes" It's amazing. You will think that her voice is a time machine.

In a pre interview she says she wants to be a superstar!
Angelina will have her wishes come true by age 18 or less since she signed with Republic Records, Amy Winehouse's old record label.
Angelina's grandmother Mery introduced her to classic jazz from the cradle. Then as a toddler AJ began exploring female jazz artists on RUclips on an Ipad. This acapella performance is striking because she pulls the opening note from out of nowhere. When you review the Billie Holiday original you can see what amazing effort Angelina put into developing her version and delivery. The disheartened faces of the other contestants in the room show how they realize that Angelina is in a league of her own and that they no longer stand a chance in the competition. BTW there is no nervousness here. Yep, cuteness overload here.
There's a video of her in a recording booth aged 6 singing I Who Have Nothing. Incredible.
There is another very important point to consider and that is Norwegian born Angelina is singing in English. When you consider that she was singing in a different language, she was seven years old, singing a cappella, auditioning in front of judges and other competitors, singing a difficult song in a genre that you would never expect to hear a seven year old sing, in a stressful situation that most seven years would not be able to endure and then have the self confidence and conviction to know she had the ability to compete with much older competitors is remarkable.
I'm very vert familiar with the original, played it a few times. I'm blown by this. Respect.
this original audition, in my opinion, is even more impressive than the more well=known "audition" that most people are familiar with. She just stepped out in a crowd of other contestants, and singing a capella, blew everyone else out of the water with her musicality.

Angelina can sing acapella better than most accomplished singers with instruments to guide them, she is out of this world no nervousness whatsoever, I like your reactions because of your musical background you can better explain her amazing abilities, you were blessed with a beautiful child I like his name as I was born in August.

This was the 1st round of the contest, Gloomy Sunday was the judges choice to be on the contest, all the singers had to do it acapella and there were some that just couldn't do it

Did you know it was going to be acapella? She's cute to the max. And so is August. But I don't think she's afraid. She said she is never afraid when she sings. Backstage at this competition, you can see her yawning and just hanging out. Imagine being out-competed by a seven year old.
As far as I read, it was her granma who introduced Angelina to Jazz. Since Angelina was 3 yo (!) she scanned with the tablet of her granma the internet for all the Jazz classics...

Angelina is born to be a legend in the industry. Even Quincy Jones, music icon from back in the day made a statement that Angelina has the greatest RAW TALENT he has ever seen since Michael Jackson.. People LIKE singers such as Taylor Swift, and other big name stars, but people LOVE Angelina Jordan. Perhaps ADORE would be a better word.

I think you have nailed her abilities perfectly, Angelina's voice is like unto an instrument that she has mastered from the start of her singing , ( her voice is like a fine violin that can produce any music she desires to bring forth out of it) , at a very very early age barely out of toddler and pre school age. I think that is why she sing any genre of music as an accomplished player of an instrument can, she can not be boxed into any one genre ,although Jazz seems to be her preference of choice In this performance you can music players that are not even there. She is symphony all by her self all wrapped up in a adorable little earth Angel . Love your comments

Great reaction Michal. This performance took place on February 7, 2014 and Angelina turned 8 on January 10. In my opinion, the only time Angelina was just a tiny bit nervous (or more likely over excited) was for her performance of Gloomy Sunday. Every other performance by our barefoot Princess has been zero nerves and 100% confidence. Angelina's ability to always have perfect timing and rhythm is remarkable, especially at this early age.
hi Andy i Think your wrong - she was not nervous there only concerned that the music may not start... nur there was another Video Who she was maybe nervous maybe overwhelmed when she sang for Quincy Jones by him sitting in his armchair you could see how she adored and respected him - for me this was a good example of her music knoledge at the age of 11 or 12 to respect the producer of many stars and Superstars Who is so old and out of her Teenage lifetime if that make sense cheers

great reaction, i listened to the original and couldn't hear any difference with acappella and the original soundtrack, that's scary for an 8 year old girl but i think it's great
She also has a great grandma, I mean a grandmother who's great. This is a woman who is an acclaimed artist in her on right and took the time and patience to indulge Angelina's fascination for Jazz as a child. She took Angelina to the record stores where Angelina could sample music at a listening desk, kind of like Barnes and Noble had in their hay-day. Angelina's grandma spent a lot of time showing and talking about music. If you watched Angelina in the little run-up before she started singing you saw grandma when they pulled back the curtain to the recording booth. Anytime Angelina sings in a booth it is grandma that is the one Angelina is making hand gestures to, to make sure everything sounds right. Grandma was also the first to jump up to applaude her grand-daughter's success. So Angelina has been fortunate in the family she was born into. I am not diminishing her talent that cannot be denied. She also works very hard at her chosen profession. I was just responding to Michal's comment about the parents, and I wanted grandma to get her due.
You can really hear the Billie Holiday influence in this song and her first audition song, also a Billie Holiday song. She has an ear that is almost perfect pitch. She is a bit of a vocal Chameleon which is as much a gift as her other tools. She will hear an artist or a form of music that is interesting to her and then absorb everything about it. Then synthesize it and retain the bits and pieces that make sense to her musically and artistically. Then she can call up what she wants to make a part of an arrangement almost as a one off, because it may be some time before she uses that feature again. Angelina is a wonder, but she has been nurtured as well as having a towering talent. Thanks for your reaction, and the insights that your talent and experience gives us.
Great honest assessment of this performance. This is not an easy song for the average listener to appreciate. As you mentioned it’s a cappella by a little girl channeling Billie Holliday. So that won’t appeal to all people. And I will honestly admit it took me a few listens to fully appreciate what she pulls off here. All of her early performances are so special because we get to see her grow up and embody all this classic music. It’s just magical.

You should show August the video of Angelina's Wicked Games, where she is playing the piano. Then ask him if he would rather sing a capella, like "I'm a Fool ..." or sing along to the piano.
Thank you for asking your son for his opinion first, and really being interested in what he has to say. I've seen multiple reaction videos involveing an adult and a young child, where the adult gives their opinion first, which of course influences what the child says later, and makes it almost pointless to ask for their opinion. You did it the right way. Nicely done.
She was 7 years old when singing this song in the audition. When she won Norway Got Talent 2014, Angelina was 8 years old. The show takes some months to complete.

Regarding matching the first and last note, you're not far off of what actually happened when this was aired on TV. All the early videos of this performance, uploaded shortly after the original broadcast, show an edited version that is missing the entire bridge of the song (from "Tiiiime and tiiime agaaaain" to just before she sings "Pity me, I need you" - it also contains cutaways to shots of the judges, which is how they hid the edit). So, we get to hear two parts of her performance, separated by almost a full minute, mashed up against each other. When the edit occurs (just as they cut to a shot of one of the female judges), you cannot tell that anything weird just happened. It just sounds like that's how she sang it. The fact that she had maintained her pitch (and tempo, and everything else) so well after all that "craziness" in the bridge… it's just amazing. Check it out: ruclips.net/video/NZU7xpeZm_c/видео.html
You hit on all the major points that struck me from the beginning listening to her. She never rushes (and from personal experience that's really hard to do) her pitch is dead on even without any kind of instrumental cue, she does those wonderful scoops up and down to the note, and she's got that old time jazz style of starting with a pure tone and tailing off to a really delicate vibrato.
I think you would listening to Amira Willighagen , she won Holland Got Talent in 2013 when she was 9 years old singing opera.
One thing that is almost never mentioned is that English is her third language..to be able to speak in three Languages at that age is just unbelievable to me . With your own child who is obviously very smart we really forget just how gifted Angelina really is ..that was a great reaction and I enjoyed your Analysis's

she know these songs thanks to her Iraninan/Persian grandmother who introduced to her to this kind of music at a very young age, her name is Mery Zamani i guess. and that barefoot incident that everyone loves to mention all the time also happened in Iran when she was visiting Iran with her grandmother. the colorful costumes/clothes she wears are also designed by her grandmother. i have a thousand problems with Iranians but credit where it's due. PS: her mother is half Iranian Half Japanese her father was swedish(correct me if im wrong) and she was born in Norway.

Angelina is never nervous performing. She goes somewhere else where the audience isn't. You missed that she is singing a song in English when that is her 3rd language - at 7 years old. In later videos around 10 and 11 years old she is singing astonishing renditions *whilst reading the lyrics*, so yes she knows the music intrinsically and perfectly, but sometimes not the lyrics? Incomprehensible.

I've hears others comment on her wild hair, and I just wanted to mention that the messy hair look was very fashionable at that time in Norway. You were supposed to look like a troll-doll.
I thought it may just have been another mark of great parenting. I know often children that age would find it difficult and uncomfortable to have their hair combed and brushed to a silky glisten "presentable" to a tv audience. So when she objected to that process, her parents simply let her appear with mussy hair. Why not?
You pick up so much, Miki. This is the judge's cuts for all the singers. They are all on stage for this second round with no audience and only the four judges. Each steps forward and performs their song while everyone watches---pressure! The judges do not make comments or show expression. Later they get together and compare notes to select who moves on to the semi's. So when it's her turn she steps up to the mike in her cute little white dress, snaggletoothed, mounds of hair, and performs her song with no accompaniment---a cappella. And she nails it! Then she smiles, gives a half curtsie, says thanks, and returns to the line. Most of the singers must be thinking they are now competing for 2nd place. After her audition with "Gloomy Sunday" went viral overnight, the judges thought they might have a Star on their show. After this performance all doubt was removed. She's goes on to win the show by a landslide, getting almost half of all the votes. Here's her performances in the semi's and finals:

If you thought she was good before, wait till you hear these two performances. WOW! Considering her age, these four performances on NGT are the best I have seen on any talent show, and I've seen many. After NGT she was destined to become an Star. And she has a library of performances (130+) that attest to her assent to becoming one of the best jazz (or any genre) singers in the world. No matter what song she is covering, she always brings that jazz quality that is now embedded in her DNA. I believe she will become THE singer of her generation; maybe even her lifetime. Yes this acapella performance is a bit hard to appreciate on its own. A fan recently overlayed this performance with a backing track. Sounded like it always was intented that way and transforms the whole thing. And you don't even note anthing out of sync. My favorite acapella piece of hers is her doing Fly me to the Moon a capella on a brazilian show. Angelina's musicality and timing comes so natural to her even singing a capella! It shows she has a great ear and has been listening to this type of music since she was a toddler. No, she was 7 year old at this audition. She was 8 when she won it.
I think there is at least one good recording of Angelina prior to this one - she was 6 and recording in a studio (supposedly in her musical school) ruclips.net/video/RjQZKBpVaes/видео.html. The song is I who have nothing - this is the only time when her excitement is very visible. Speaking about the music she was listening as a child, it is interesting that her grandfather was Japanese so I would guess with him she listened to some Japanese music, probably that explains that at the concert in Japan she sang one song in Japanese ruclips.net/video/dT0L8ISgE8Q/видео.html.
