What's terrifying is that AI research is racing ahead, and the public has no say in whether we want such a powerful weapon to exist. If we can't make a conscious collective decision about stuff like this then eventually there will be something powerful and dangerous enough, followed by an arms race, followed by disaster. Ever wonder why, despite millions of viable Earth-like planets, we have not contacted alien life yet? Maybe civilisations that can develop high technology are doomed to destroy themselves. Not that such fatalism will mean much when it is us wishing we had done more to stop it.
@@jimcrelm9478 I partly agree - wouldn't we be so much safer if weapons of mass destruction had never been invented? - but then there are many positive applications of AI, for example more accurate tumour detection, spotting animals in camera footage to monitor populations, identifying supernovae to name a few off the top of my head, and if we want to develop these then all the dangers of more advanced AI come too.

To me it seems like the relative peace and prosperity of the past century has come about as the result of the distribution of power - through the vote, through wealth redistribution, through organised workers movements and through the ever present threat of revolution backed by the USSR (and, for people living in the Eastern Bloc, the threat to the "socialist" state of a US backed counterrevolution). Any technology which interferes with the power of the people to defend our hard-won gains is a threat which cannot possibly, on balance, save our lives or improve our condition in the long run. And I can't see how AI and machine learning can be anything other than a massively centralising force which ordinary people could never use without a state or a corporation to back them up.

This is why trying to beat technology is completely hopeless. Instead, we have to familiarise ourselves with psychology and sociology and politics, and generally systematically and personally convince everyone to be and do better rather than just try and disarm them. Because disarming increasingly becomes unfeasibly difficult with technological development.
