Hey everyone, thanks for the comments. Some quick answers: - that mushroom looking brush is actually a crystal brush I found on the net. I just need a brush to put down values without hard-edges. So any brush with random edges will work. - the colors are chosen from the palette on the lower right corner. These colors swatches were collected over the past 10+ years; so I sorta know which ones work well with each other (the palette might look messy, but there's an order to them in my mind).
These are great tutorials. Flipping the canvas is a great idea. Your teaching style moves right along with a lot to say. Not boring!!! I am thankful and much enjoy your videos.
bob ross for most of us i think was our introduction to landscape oil paintings. I was just a little kid watching bob ross, easily my favourite painter to watch... I like this guys tutorials too though, allows me to take my oil painting techniques and add a whole new spectrum of mood to my art. :D
My mind is absolutely blown away... I sat through this 22 minute long video with my jaw glued to the floor. You start by doodling some colors here and there and the next second - BAM, it looks freaking amazing. Your videos are very inspirational and you've helped me gain more interest in the business. I've been clueless as to where to begin, but this has lit my fire once again! I wish you had some online program, I buy it without hesitation.
I've be using these techniques with regular art. It's helped a lot, I've been able to work on the images so my teacher can help me correct all the problems early on. and half the problem were removed completely. after the first two class days, all of the stress is removed, and it's just a task of completing the picture with details. I will suggest this to any artist. If anything knowing how long it would take you to work on a project will remove half the stress.
Holy mother of god! Back in 6th grade art class, we had to pick a picture, sketch it and then carve out a stamp-thing version of it on something like corkboard so that we could reproduce it many times. I had no idea back then that Feng Zhu made it, but I recognize it here in this video! Holy shit, that's so cool, I knew about your work before I even knew you existed!
you are a master. you instantly became one of my favorite artist. 1 because you have a golden talent. 2 you did not forget us little people. i can never thank you enough for these videos. Thank you so much. follow your bliss!
Hi Feng, I really appreciate how all your videos clearly explain the key elements to create images with great entertainement value, and not just pretty paintings (altough they also look neat). Thanks for taking the time to share these information with us.
I'm so glad I watched this video. I pretty much have nothing to do with visual design or illustration myself, but as a composer it's very inspiring to watch this. Thanks a lot.
your digital painting Design Cinema - EP 40 - Fantasy Landscape, is a perfect example of landscape drawing with the latest digital tech. I liked it. cheers!
I'm not Feng Zhu in person (obviously) but from watching several of his other videos, you see that he sometimes uses a real photo for the background, sometimes for texture, somtimes for colour sheme and sometimes not at all. It really depends on what he is drawing, but since he works in the industry, speed is important and textures really speeds up the process.
I get you. I'm just repeating what the artist said in previous videos that he uses almost primarily standard PS brushes. He mentioned that aspiring students always ask him about brushes, thinking the brushes do the work and he tells them he uses the default ones and those are pretty much all you need. The real skill comes from practice and not from a particular brush set, his words.
Your school is nearby my working place, I wanted to walk in and say thank you for all these awesome informative videos every time instead of comments here, but I just couldn't do that. Thank you for all these videos, really! Appreciate it!
Dude. One of the most useful videos I have ever seen! It explained exactly what I wanted to know, and even just being able to watch the processes while you explained the general concept of what was going on, was fantastic!:)
In doing a study of this watching it step by step I'm noticing that the initial drawings of the mountains have a lot more form than meets the eye initially.
At 2:35 i'm already beaten, it's far more better than any painting i've been working on for weeks and months. It's even more frustrating than trying to bite your own gums
ive only watched a few of these, but seeing the workflow alone has improved my painting so much, thanks so much! i feel i should make several accounts just so i can subscribe more than once!
The choice of brush can really change a picture. It can make it pop out, or it could make it blend together in the perfect way. You don't need to go and "get" brushes. Whatever program you use to draw allows you to change the size of the brush and many other settings such as pressure, opacity, thick/thin, etc.
Going to KCAI this month with digital media or illustration in mind, this shows me I have mush to learn, as I have yet to really use and digital painting
"maybe 15 minutes in" *jawdrop* Detailing I don't have that much problems with, as you say as well, the hardest part is what you did in those 15 minutes. And that's what I'm having the hardest time with as well.. Doing a rough painting is hard for me for some reason.
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
I also found that (I know its hard to resist) just working very loosely and general and then slowly tightening it up (like Feng and many other great artists). I found that most of the issues in my art kinda fixed themselves when i just let the art kinda guide me instead of me forcing my agenda on it...I know it sounds weird, but my anatomy got better so fast!!
You are awesome! I stumbled across this a few days ago and I've been watching every single episode. It's like Bob Ross in the future except instead of "happy trees" it's "angry robots". I have to pay to figure out how to use Photoshops brushes like that though right? This is free, I can only imagine what I would learn in your school. Fantastic
these videos are really helpful. I hope that one day I get as good as this guy when doing digital art because right now i'm terrible at it and want to get better.
FZDSCHOOL Can you do a video on the brush you use? I have tried to mimic the effect, but I cannot get the brush to not overlap a previous stroke (it does not blend like in this video) It would be greatly appreciated if you could help with this.
You are genuis with your art. I am learning so much from you. You are gifted at teaching us important details to creating beautiful art. I especially appreciated the tip of regularly flipping the painting to check for any composition error. I'm glad I discovered you! P.S. Could you describe the steps you use to take your low res painting and make it high res. I didn't thing you could say go from 72 to 300 dpi without ruining a picture. Thanks again!
He uses the "chalk" brush as well. He does use a custom "crystal" brush in the beginning, but you can get the same effect by going into the chalk brush settings and changing the Spacing" and Angle Jitter some.
Hi guys. I am a graphic designer by trade but I have this burning desire in my heart to give stuff like this ago...problem is, I have no idea where to start. I can only find tutorials like this which show an advanced level, where really I am looking for beginner tutorials. I dont want to break into the industry, just paint stuff I love! A point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated
+HDC to paint like this you must at first draw very well. And understand fundamentals. watch Sycra's video on "what are art fundamentals" and there you will see the skills needed.
@tom3167 in production time is your most valuable commodity - the ability to produce quality work as fast as possible is vital, so you have to be prepared to cut a few corners.
That's just incredible, I can't wrap my head around the detail. I can't add detail like that at all that's amazing! So overwhelming to try to do, just don't know where to start :(

FUNDAMENTALS. Lighting, perspective, anatomy, build understanding, do lots of value drawings of landscapes that are QUICK but capture the scene very accurately very quickly.
I'm 14, and I just don't get it. He starts from NOTHING and makes some of the most amazing things. Im learning this stuff right now, pretty fun, I hope I can be nearly as good as him in 4 years!
It's pretty much just a basic messy texture brush. If you dig through enough brush packs you'll find plenty of these. Search this in google and you'll find all the brush you could ever want and more. "the round tablet pro brushes" It should be the first one, enjoy.
Nice one Feng! It would be nice since you mentioned Ferarri and line drawing,to draw something like that. Supercar of some kind. Just because of those lines that these cars have. Thank you for putting this videos up,we all have learned so much from you. :)
Coming back after so many years 😄

I'm so glad I watched this video. I pretty much have nothing to do with visual design or illustration myself, but as a composer it's very inspiring to watch this. Thanks a lot.

Omg...I am jealouse at your talent.
Some people have talent, others actually do something and train and train... Practice makes perfect...
I wish I was staying in Singapore. Defiantly would have joined your school. Hunting for such skilled professionals/trainers here in India.
I agree with you mate, but sometimes brushes can create effects that are more aesthetically pleasing than a hard round, or airbrush, etc.
just want to say woooww, amazing!!
