Watch the videos you guys, pay attention and listen. Stop asking the same old, same old. The only way is hard work and dedication. No magic brushes, super layers or magic tech. Thanks a lot, Feng, for having all these amazing videos up. They're immensely inspirational, motivational and very educational. Wish I had watched them sooner.
Happy to see a new Feng video! I am also highly amused and pleased that half of the suggested videos are related to Sonic the hedgehog. Chaos control indeed.
Feng Z, dude you are literally the example of what can be achieved when you apply talent and hard work to something you love. You are like the michael jordan of concept art! Keep doing your stuff, this helps so much to aspiring concept artists such as myself.
My favorite part of being a designer is breaking the rules. I especially love marketing rules, thinking of ways to encourage sales mainly through word of mouth, and no advertising budget. Just an honest guy doing something amazing and sharing with the world is easy for people to tell more people and spread the word. FZD fits that role, lots of subscribers and views for a channel that is in a very small youtube demographic.
One of the things I love about watching you paint is about half way through your paintings trigger something in my mind where what you're putting on the canvas comes to life in my mind. I can see the creature in this painting moving and the lava flowing etc, it's amazing and I don't find this with anybody else on youtube. Giant inspirations and vibes!
thank you, Feng, for making these videos, the way that you describe the 'how and why' of your process helps so much. I can't convey the gratitude I have for your generosity.
Hi Everyone, I'm someone from the current June batch of FZD. If anyone is considering coming, I HIGHLY recommend attending. The Teachers are all nice and super informative and the classes are highly intimate. If you can handle the insane workload, you find yourself eager to go to school every day!
I'll tell you why I like this channel so much; this is educational for those that have achieved basic or beginner level knowledge of illustration or design. Most How-Tos focus on beginning information. Feng takes it to the next level, and demands more from the prospective student. Great stuff.
Thank you for sharing all of these amazing process time lapse videos. One of my greatest weaknesses as an artist is landscapes, so this has been a tremendous help.
I´m checking youtube everyday since the last two weeks with the hope to see a new design cinema release, the episode 54 of Feng "the master" Zhu. This is a good day.
FZD SCHOOL OF DESIGN - RUclips 100k Subscribers Contest To appreciate all our Design Cinema fans, our 100K subscriber contest is now live! Come enter and win Flight to Singapore + 3 nights stay in a 5-star hotel. For more information, please visit: fzdschool. com / contest. html
yes, you are correct, opacity is dangerous =P and about the line art thing, everyone works differently, try finding a way that works for you and dont think to much about it, in the beginning its more important that you learn then having an awezome end result
Thanks olbertus, wasn't aware of that. My suspect after thinking about it was possibly slow performance with the media brushes at the higher resolutions. But now I know, more issues than what I had thought. Thanks again.
If anyone wants to see another great example of this style of creating a painting check out Torvenius and his many daily speedpaints here on YT. Good to have you back Feng, I thought there was something wrong with my youtube alerter thing for a while there.
This is easily the best video for those of us starting out with digital painting. Useful, concise, and informative. Thank you much - I look forward to watching your other videos! : D
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
Been waiting for a new video! I study design in Germany but it's more about layout design and typography. Your videos are inspiring and I will definitely try to get into entertainment design!
Yes! New video! I was so excited when it came up on my feed! You're awesome Feng and I have learned so much from your videos! Thanks for this one and I can't wait for the next!
Hi, you are welcome to drop by at our School on weekdays, during office hours: 10am - 5pm. Please call before coming by so that someone can assist you. Also, if you are currently in Singapore, feel free to drop by at our Grad Show tonight, 8th June 2012, starting at 7pm to view some cool works from our graduates. Thank you!
What most people seem to miss is that this kind of process works only if you have a painting vocabulary inside of you. Even though he's laying random colors, you cannot escape your brain, and his has a long ass experience and knows what colours work, what shapes work, and so on. You should do these once you have a little bit of ease with your technique.
Exactly my point! Not many people have the skills, it takes time to acquire those skills. Its easy to talk as you painting because ya already know your stuff, i can guarantee many people get disappointed because they try tho paint digital art, because this guys make it seem easy.
Indeed. I tried it myself some years ago without actually knowing what the hell i was doing and it gets you nowhere without at least some basic knowledge. But IF you have fundamental knowledge, it can be a good method especially at times when you do not know where to start. If you know what i mean :)
Thank you very much for this new video, my whole weeks gets brightened up when i see a new video from you. Question: When i draw for myself just for fun i am very creative and have lots of fun, but whenever i have to draw for school(industrial design) i seem forget most of the stuff i learned about drawing and just waste tons of time doing really bad work. Any tip what i could change up?
Hello~ Cambridge GCE O Level is equivalent to Senior High School (Grade 12) Diploma. So you may submit your High School Diploma in lieu of Cambridge GCE O Level. Hope this helps. Thank you!
Another great video as always! One question though: You mentioned that your current work requires you to stick to certain rules in your designs. Could you please show us how you work with that in order to not let it restrain youself in your creativity too much?
Thank you for your response. :) Do you mean too many brush strokes with a too low opacity? I've also yet to master the concept of drawing silhouette shapes, so my paintings sometimes end up being a mix between thick line art and painting before I get to detailing the painting. Anyhow, thanks. Still plenty to learn.
Thank you. Yes, that may very well be the problem indeed. I'm using both Painter 12 and Photoshop CS2, but I'm pretty sure it's something that has to do with my painting itself and the choices I'm making. Somehow I can't quite get that crisp and sharp feel of a painting, it'll be come a muddy mess. :)
This was exactly what was blocking me. Frustrating me at every start of every drawing I have to make for my project. Ending up in throwing drawings away. I felt so limited in applying my visual knowledge because I had to do everything right perspective wise etc etc. Thanks for posting
Feng you are awesome! I would love to see some fresh piece that you take it to ultra refined phase for some next video! You can talk about any kind of topic while you do it, it will still be amazingly entertaining and informative to watch!
Hi @Yognaught Xedmos, Hello! Please refer to our Design Cinema Episode 36 for traditional mediums if you do not have access to a tablet. Hope this helps!
Awesome as usual, learning concept art as a hobby right now, but watching your video`s makes me wonder if I should change career paths and focus solely on concept art / production work.
Thanks, I know how to set custom shortcut keys, I just wasn't sure whether he used that or if there was a default combo for that. I'll do the Ctrl+F too.
Going to check out that video once more. Guess I shouldn't be afraid to use a high opacity before trying to add details. Possibly the size of brushes makes a difference too. High opacity with larger brushes, lower opacity with smaller brushes, unless you're adding sharper details, right?
just don't have the means to pursue a professional career in design atm. But I enjoy painting in my spare time and photoshop so these videos kick ass either way... And I still have people willing to buy my printed art, which has, to say the least, evolved immensly since i started watching your videos. thanks alot
@arandomperson3 Hi! In regards to your queries, students enrolling to the full-time Diploma program are required to obtain a Student Pass from the Singapore Immigration to allow them staying and studying in Singapore during the study period. As for financial aid, we do not have any financial aid nor scholarship program at the moment. Please refer to the program fees section on our website for additional information. Thank you!
Also, to make your own brushes like this or in general, you can make a small (100x100px is fine, up to you) image, Use black and white, and using the polygon lasso create your own shape. Fill it in with the paint bucket. When you're happy, go to Edit then Define Brush Preset. It will ask what you want to name it, then hit enter. When you scroll to the bottom of your Brush Presets it will be there! You'll have to mess with the brush's Spacing to get it to look better, but it's easy :-)
I'd really like to see what brushes you're using in the initial phases of these paintings- They leave a pattern that is very natural looking, and seem to be set to change width based on pressure, and looks sort of like chalk how they leave bits that don't get color on each stroke. Makes the whole thing look more like actual paint.
Franz Duck The main Feng's brush in the video is the Chalk Brush. You can easily find it in the PS brush palette (F5). Just make sure you've set the large list or the small list viewing mode in the palette options .
Сергей Гальцов I think the brushes that he's talking about are the ones that appear at the very beginning of the video. These are some very large brushes that aren't in the photoshop default
Yo! I just finished watching every single video (a few months on it...) and they were all helpful. I would like to know more about the process. I mean, when a client hire you for a project is there any kind of briefing? any kind of workflow you follow? what kind of information do you need to have from clients at the beginning of the project and how is the work process in general fom when the client hire you to when you bring him the concepts. thanks a lot.
Do you check your values by applying Gradient map or by desaturating the image (Shift+Ctrl+U) ? The reason why I'm asking is because they give very different results. Desaturation will turn blue, red and green into 50% grey, but gradient map will define blue and red as much darker greys. So which one would be correct?
Maybe to low opacity? Muddy feel can be caused by to soft edges so it looks blurred. Try to use 90% opacity so there will be a minor blur but the edges will be hard enough to make the values read. Just saying :)
I'm curious about how you select the colors you use. I have watched about half of your videos and have yet to find one on color but how do you get the colors you use? They always seem so great together. Do you have a palette set up or do you use your artist's intuition? If there's already a video that I missed on this I would be grateful to anyone that directed me towards it. Thanks a lot and great videos.
Hi Feng, welcome back sir. Your work is very inspiring and mesmerizing. Can I ask you a few questions. Im getting the hand of painting digital. You mention u work with pen pressure off. You switch ur opacity by pressing from 1 > 0. When you paint, do u set ur ink to not bleed over on top of each stroke? If i do a stroke at 60% opacity and another on top with same %. My ink becomes darker and I dont want that. How can I keep it without darkening? What dpi u start with? Thx for the help sir. ;)
He hass mentioned other times that brush is not what makes the artist. Although, he does use some custom brushes, he mostly uses the chalk brush in the Photoshop standard set along with the standard circular brushes. I do not remember in which episode, but he has clearly mentioned this in at least one of the episodes of this series.
Watch the videos you guys, pay attention and listen. Stop asking the same old, same old. The only way is hard work and dedication. No magic brushes, super layers or magic tech.

Great stuff.
Thanks for the upload! It's always a motivator for me to watch these videos when I'm feeling uninspired.
Sir, you are the reason I want to go into this industry. Thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos!
What's amazing about the people on the comment section, most of them are probably big professionals in the industry now, which is insanely amazing!

I almost gave up hope you would release another episode. I'm so glad you have :) I love them all and wish I could afford to come to your school.
Feng, obviously, you are our master.
The game he talked about that he was working on in this video was Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
Thank you so much for uploading this video, Feng! I will enjoy watching it very much.

He's just using the PS default brushes.
I dont think so, those brushes are at least 500 pixels wide. I can't find anything like them in the default brush set
Zee Bashew
if those are really default brushes, it would be awesome to know where to find them, any hints?

Thank you very much!
Wow these are amazing.
