Best Mosquito Repellent Device plus Money Saving Tips and Hacks

- It's surprising how many people don't know this exists. Perhaps some have heard of the classic little Thermacells that are sold in the big box stores, but never knew that there was a way to get the same results with a fraction of the cost. That's why I'm sharing this. I stumbled upon the product called the 'Backpacker' by Thermacell a while ago and it enabled me to save a lot of money by using the bigger, cheaper fuel sources like the butane/propane mixes and by adding the aftermarket adapter which will enable these wonderful devices to run on the even cheaper, green bottles of straight up propane. There is even a way to adapt that even further to run on the big 20lb tanks of propane, but I think it loses it's mobility and it's allure then. After all, I have brought these mosquito deterrents everywhere. Even on a kayak with me! And I'd hate to lose that ability.
On a side note, I have always been suspicious of how much risk there was to dissuading the small denizens from biting me versus the risk of developing cancer or some extra limbs or some other undesirable side effects, so I have done a bit of research and waited quite some time before releasing this video. I not only wanted to know that my 'hacks' worked, but I didn't want to encourage folks to do anything that might be dangerous or unhealthy. That being said, I still would like you to make up your own mind by doing your own homework. One neat resource I discovered was the N.P.I.C. website that explains the effects of various pesticides. If you click on the link below, scroll down to Pyrethrins which is the chemical I used in this video.
npic.orst.edu/i...
If you do decide to recharge the blue pads, mix 1 part pesticide to 5 parts water. Give or take. Mix and dip the pads in it and store them in a different container. I marked the Tupperware so I wouldn't reuse them to store leftover mac-n-cheese or something. And as with all chemicals, keep them out of reach of kids and animals. Pyrethrin is especially bad for cats and fish.
I really hope this video helps you enjoy your time outdoors even more. For you. Your friends and family. And for your pets.
I also wish I had some kind of affiliate links to help you find all the bits and pieces I mentioned, and make a bit of money while doing so, but for now, I'm happy to just share the knowledge and bother you with all those darn advertisements us RUclips creators put in our little movies. Finding the items I mentioned is up to you ;^)

Pro tip! Use yellow teflon gas tape on the threads of the 1 lb. propane tank before twisting on the butane to propane adapter to prevent leaks
Love these type of videos. Was missing the old Marty videos of when you would craft things and the go out and use them. Keep up the great content!
When this isobutane model Thermacell first came out, lots of folks were using the adapter hack to attach the 1lb green propane tanks as demonstrated here. Big mistake. Propane isn't filtered like isobutane and contains numerous impurities, including a black sticky oil that will plug and destroy your isobutane Thermacell. That's exactly what happened and was reported in numerous reviews about this product, which had the deleterious effect of significantly lowering the star rating and scaring people away from purchasing it. My strong recommendation is to only use isobutane tanks and DO NOT use the adapter to run propane through this device. I've had mine for over 5 years now and it's working as good as the day I bought it. Great device, but only if used per the manufacturers recommendation with isobutane. Otherwise, get ready to replace it when it stops working.
Good to know. I have a couple of those green propane canisters that have been sitting around for years. I was thinking I might be able to use them up with this in my backyard, but I don't want to ruin this device just to use up those canisters.
Thank you so much for the wonderful hack! I can’t think of a hack that could be more useful then this. You are the man.
Im just now watching the loop videos. I didn't realize how much effort you had to put out each day. They are interesting but what I like the most is the care that you give the dogs.
👍, still with you Marty
Thanks for your vids brother
,
You can refill the green propane tanks from larger barbeque still tanks,,cheap
I love thermacell mosquito repellent it’s awesome. I take those blue mats after they turn almost white and then I get them to smolder in a fire and burn slowly and it works pretty well to maximize the thermacell use with the small thermacells.
Great video. I’m wondering if the CO2 from the propane will attract mosquitoes, since that’s what the Propane traps emit
I saw your video and I needed another thermocell. I had the blue adapter because I sometimes use a mini backpack stove that has that small screw on the port and it worked great with regular propane bottle. I bought the thermocell backpacker like in the video used the light blue adapter with a green bottle of propane. The flame in the thermocell isn’t strong enough to burn the blue pad. With the backpacker style thermocells you need a Colman can of a butane/propane mix that luckily my neighborhood Walmart carries at a decent price. If that doesn’t work I got a new defective out of the box thermocell.
Update: I had to return the thermocell backpacker because it got damaged using the wrong fuel. Luckily Amazon exchanged it at no charge and got the right fuel and it worked perfectly. The compatible fuel is the one shown attached the to thermocell backpacker in this video. Coleman brand mix of butane and propane. Stay away from the green bottle using that adapter or you might damage the thermocell like I did. There’s only a couple of dollars price difference between the two types of fuels .
You can get a valve to refill the camp stove cartridges thus a small can once can be refilled without carrying a huge can. Good vid, all the way from Australia.
Really good to now what to use on the pads. And to save on fuel, you can refill the tanks off a 20# propane bottle. The green bottle and the smaller one can both be refilled.
Thanks Marty I use the Thermo Cell a lot but I discard the Pads going to start keeping them now your not wrong they are expensive. Enjoyed it
that's cool about the pyrethyrin I wanted to know what they use on those pads. I wonder, can you leave the pads in the Thermacell Backpacker, then make a 1 part to 5 part tincture of that pyrethrin in a dropper bottle and just add a few drops at a time with out having to remove the pads and just keep refilling it that way?
Wow!!! So glad I found you. This was exactly what I was hoping to find. I love all your tips and truly appreciate your video. Thank you 🙏
Liked and subbed because of this video...THANKS!
You need some Amazon affiliate links on this video, I would have bought from there immediately!
Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!! This is gonna help me so so much. I love fishing and camping just like you. And this has always been a issue. So ty so so much.
Again another great video. I am always learning from you . thank you Marty.
That is a pretty cool tip to maximize thermacell.
Probably don't need to, but you can buy an adapter to fill those green bottles with the larger propane bottle. Much cheaper than buying the green ones all the time.
When I saw the Cup Holder Part 2 video you recently uploaded, I was curious about your bug prevention, as it seemed you were very experienced in keeping bugs away. Neat video, I'll have to look into this!
Great video, thanks for making it. I’ve bought the thermacell mr300 and will most likely buy the backpacker also. Your video got me wondering if I’m onto something and I would be interested to know if you’ve had any dealings with ‘no see ums’ and using specifically permethrin to repell them. I’ll explain… I’m in the u.k. and looking to visit Scotland but the Scottish midge (scientific name Culicoides impunctatus) is a problem, it belongs to the same family known in North America as ‘no see ums’. Thermacell tell me their regular pads are made specifically to repel mosquitos and will do horse flies, deer flies. And that- it is their multi insect repellant pads that contain prallethrin that repel mozzies, black fly and ‘no see ums’. But they tell me these multi pads are not available internationally atm. (Don’t know if that means there’s some international restriction or they’re not ready to market them globally yet). So that’s a problem for me since I’m unable to test if they work on the Scottish midge. I’m not certain what prallethrin is or even if it’s their twist on a licensed version of permethrin and I need to look into it further, because if it’s simply permethrin (as in your video) then I could buy it here and soak used pads and try. Is why I had to ask if you’ve had any dealings with the ‘No see ums’, maybe you could shed some light on it for me? Any advice appreciated, thanks again,Stuart.
Thanks for working hard making the video. Just ordered one and will make my own juice, as you mentioned, too. Thanks again and God bless… Gary.
Thank You x 10. Mosquitos etc LOVE me & I Love the outdoors.. will absolutely try this. Thanks for the info!
Grab one of those disposable propane tank refill devices too. You can refill the 1 pound disposable cans from 20lb propane bottles. Saves you a boatload of money if you go through them a lot.
Awesome video and explanation. I'll be adopting your method and have shared the video with outdoor-minded friends. Cheers!
Hey did you end up trying the propane tank? I read in the description of the Thermacell Backpacker "Note: Runs on a backpacking stove fuel canister (not included). Pressurized self-sealing (iso) butane and propane fuel mix. Product will not function with 100% propane fuel tanks." so I am curious how it turned out?
If you buy a primus gas adapter for refilling lighters you could charge up those spent shells of gas cheaper from a big cannister then those small spray-ones from the store. Just use one of those plastic adapters you get when buying the spray-ones.
I have watched all types of Thermacell videos. Let me just say, skip the other videos or watch them if your curious.
Here is the Thermacell Zen Master. I've done the check valve canisters. The 1lb. Coleman. Reloading the Thermacell pads.
This is the easiest and Best (my opinion). I use the "Backpacker". Refillable 1lb "Flame King" tanks are a breeze to refill. When reloading
the pads with Pyretherin, which is colorless, use harmless blue food coloring to paint them Blue! Looks and preforms like new.
Yesssssss, thank you for this video. Good idea it can also be used in kayaking.
Sweet spot you have there. I’m looking forward to getting back to camping again when I do the semi retired thing.
Thanks Marty 😊
Was looking at exactly that product,
With all the water around, we definitely need skeeta scooter products that work.👍
Thanks for the tip I’m ordering right now 😎
my thougths exactly....i am gonna do that also reuse and soak in pyreth... thank you 305
P.S. Very nice closure to the video also.
Great hack Marty!
Great freaking vid man! Now show us all how to sharpen a 🔪!
Great tips, ready to save a little money!!
im sold, im buying one! Thanks for the great review, i like your style of vid, ill be watching more :D
Since the blue pads are no longer blue , how do you tell when your reconditioned pads are spent & ready to be reconditioned again ?
Thanks for the tips . Best regards from Daytona Beach . ( 4 hrs. ? )
When the mosquitos show up, change the pad. Even with the new pads, they don't quite turn entirely white when they're spent. I get about an hour out of each pad, wish they lasted longer.
1 percent and 5 percent?? You meant 1 part and 5 parts, right?
Do you have a link for the adapters? Thanks in advance. Great video!!!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Man
Valuable video thanks for sharing
Great tips as always.
Awesome, thanks for sharing 👍🏻❤️
Not my solution, so I don't know how good it works, but I saw a video somewhere of a guy using a fan with mosquito gauze at the back. He said it helped a lot. Mosquitos got attracted by the fan noise and got stuck on the gauze as they are actually pretty bad flyers. Worth a try if you want to avoid chemicals?
This is awesome thank you. Can you tell me how long you soak them in the solution? Do you just dip them quick or let them soak? Also how long do these burn for before having to replace? Thanks again for this!
This is awesome! Thanks!!!
Thanks for this!
Good info! Thanks!
Thanks Marty!
Try permethrin spray from walmart. Spray on clothes/fabrics and let it dry. Safe for the pups once its dry.
afternoon Marty 👋😎👍
Good.
good one Marty😃😃👍👍
Great Hack💯 Thx Marty!!!
Dude, thank you very much for the info! Quick question: I’ve been having trouble keeping my Thermacell backpacker lit. Seems to do better with the Coleman Butane/Propane mix, but can’t seem to get the propane-only with adapter going. I just wondered if you ever got a finicky Backpacker before?
Great Video, great content.
Got a batch of pads to do soon, just thinking I wonder if I add a little blue food dye to make the dried pads all purty again.... random thought for the day!
Thanks Marty
This is great 👍 thank you
Excellent thanks
I don't know dude , and that intro read was very scary ... LoL
How large of an area does this set up cover approx.?
How freaking awesome!!
Hey man awesome discussion and pups! I have a question about refilling the pads...after you soak the pads do you let them dry before using again?
Also do you still drink Budd light? haha just kidding...cheers man let me know Im totally gonna buy a bottle of Pyrethrin Concentrate
Well brother I’d rather contend with the skeeters then with snowflakes 🥶 😁even though it’s April 2 👍🏻
You could probably just add some blue food coloring to your recharging solution to get close to the original result
Nice hack thanks MZ!
He mentions you can run the thermacell straight off the propane. Does anyone have experience with that? Does it work the same?
Marty, do the recharged pad last as long? Thanks
Woah! Heck yeah!
You need to do a little bit more research the pads have Allethirn witch is a derivative of pyrethrum
How is the smell? Strong?
The second coming of Ron Propeil.
link to 1lb adapters?
Wow! 2 years ago people still drank Bud Light. Those were good times!
Can we get a quick boat update?
Too bad we cant get an adapter to have it attach straight to a small propane canister (which can be refilled from a bbq tank and save even more money!)
Sweet tips!👍 alredy checked where to buy it all :-) I use Thermasell alot here in sweden, and here it´s cazy expensive! 12 smal plastic bottles and 24 pads is about 70$. Well it was last summer, this summer prob around 90$. This will save me a fortune 🙂
Great information to have, thanks.
Vitamin B1 is the greatest deterrent ....... mosquitos won't even land on you..... thanks for the heads up Zoff
Sorry, the evidence says no. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35199632
Sweet
Can this be used inside?
no
👍 😊
Hey are you still on utube
Save your Walmart propane bottles and get an adapter from home depot, get your big grill propane tank to refill the little ones, seriously man,it's a fact
More vids on the pelican intruder pls
👋👋
where's your camper
you meant 1 PART concentrate 5 Parts water. Not percentage. slip of tongue.
But not the same thing
Soak your clothes in permethrin. Bugs will stay away.
Marty mosquitos and Bud
