  • In this video, it is demonstrated how easy it is to refill the old and used Thermacell butane gas canisters that you can buy here:
    amzn.to/43PecA8
    amzn.to/3WYKW86
    The instructions include how to take apart your old canister and 1. prepare them for refilling, removing the brass valve, and 2. the small valve, Thermacell has placed inside the cartridges to prevent you from refilling your canisters. Then it is shown how to select the best fitting to the inexpensive refueling bottle with new butane gas.
    The trick in this DIY Thermacell hack is to use a pincers that doesn't destroy the O-ring that seals your mini-caniaters inside your Thermacell unit. It is also highlighted how to find a screw that fits perfectly with the second aluminium valve inside the canister so that it can be removed and discarded.
    The modified Thermacell canisters are best marked as ‘modified’ so that you remember which ones you can refill. Only after removing the internal valve can you refill the Thermacell butane gas cartridges. Once you have modified your cartridges, you have expanded your use of your Thermacell unit, and you can start travelling with it, and it's empty canisters to any destination where you can only go by airlines. Empty and opened canisters are allowed on the airlines. The cartridges can then be filled at your adventure destination by only purchasing a cigarette butane gas tube and refill them outdoors.
    If you smell a little bit of gas when you refill your cartridges, this is not more dangerous than filling a cigarette lighter. However, you are advised to have good ventilation in the room where you are working and not to inhale butane gas (same as when you fill a cigarette lighter).

    This video is superior to others because the gentleman is precise and explains why he does what he does.
    Without his thoroughness, one could easily be unaware of crucial steps.
    Nicely done Ben!
    Cheers, John
    PS I had to modify my refill canister nozzle, with a wee slot to allow the butane entry into the Thermacell, otherwise the gas could not flow.

      How did you add the slot? I can't seem to refill mine.

    Excellent guide, especially the refill part! One must use a fine nozzle that depresses the valve!

    For me it's not even about the money but rather the waste involved with these. I thought there has to be a way to make these less wasteful. Thank you!

      Same with those propane bottles for camp stoves. They sell refillable versions you can refill from a 20lb tank. Go from $7-8 per bottle to $1 per bottle.

    I thought those canisters contained the chemicals used to repell mosquitos. I never thought they would just contain butane considering their price. Ridiculous.
    The price of the canisters has kept me from buying one of these things. But knowing this, I will buy one. And refill it like you did. Thank you!

    You should not twist the brass piece any more than you have to to pull it out. It will come straight out. The twisting motion tends to erode the hard plastic & when you push the brass part back in it may not seal as well as it needs to....

    Hej, followed the instructions to the letter and went even to class ohlsson to buy same gas and screws. All goes as planned until I try to refil It massively leaks on the side and barely fills the tank. Any tips on that?

👍👍 Mvh

      I completely disagree with this particular video (but agree in general across RUclips).
      He made this video so perfect for beginners. And I really appreciate the detailed info about what surfaces are important not to scratch, and what the risk is if you do.
      .the demos and closeups were also useful. It's just about a perfect video tutorial tbh

    Hi Ben For some
    Reason I cannot fill the canister have themacell changed something
    I put just the valve on the butane gas and cannot get gas to flow

    • @Ken_Sweden
      @Ken_Sweden 7 месяцев назад +2

      Should be very straightforward. I suggest you put on some gloves to protect your hands and then play around with the injection procedure because if you don’t wiggle it around on the filling tube from your mani bottle, then you quickly have an overpressure inside and excess air will prevent you from filling. So, essentially what you need to do is to try to purge out air while you fill up with liquid.

  • @lanceh8033
    @lanceh8033 Год назад +1

    What brand butane canister did you use? The ones I have came across in the stores do not have the different size nozzles.

  • @SilasMiller
    @SilasMiller Месяц назад +1

    The problem is that the Pads themselves are more expensive then buying the combo making this not more cost effective. 12 Mats are $15 where 30 with canisters are $39 so roughly the same but you get the fuel too.

    • @iCodeSwitch
      @iCodeSwitch 28 дней назад +1

      Do you have and use a thermocell? I ask because I always have so many blue pads left over when my butane is gone (for a number of reasons that I could explain if you're interested 😂)
      So if you don't already have one, you might be surprised how much faster the butane goes than the blue pads, making the ability to refill still cost effective and helpful to extend the time between buying refills.

      Does anyone have any ideas on how to reactivate the platelets themselves? Which liquid in which concentration?
