    Getting into the engine bay is your first challenge on the more modern Transits. What a crazy idea of using your ignition key to open the bonnet. I have a Mercedes E class 320cdi, and getting the glow plugs out of that is a scary job. The last plug I replaced, I ran the engine upto temperature and used my battery impact on its lowest setting,and that worked. The glow plugs look very similar to the ones in the transit. I also did all four plugs on my Mini cooper D with the BMW engine.They were also frightening to get out. I did test them with a battery as you did, the problem being they are only 4 volts, so the only working plug I had popped with 12V on it.

      I know! you'd think they might have changed it for the customs after having so many problems previously ha .. yeah we have a little impact gun for glow plugs & it seems to work fairly well tbf 👍 .. I was temped to go that bit further to get it out but kept panicking about having an issue when the van needed to go back on the road the next day ha. ive had a few troubles with them on the mini before 😖, the worst ones we seem to suffer with are the vauxhall 1.3 cdti, they are piss thin! 😬

    Will be doing this myself on a 2.2 Custom “as you mentioned is the same engine” was advised to get it up to temp to beforehand to aid in loosening them, have also heard good reviews about Inject crack spray from euro carparts so will be giving them a good soaking on & off the day before, I do have time on my hands so can take time which is a different story for most who can’t have their van off the road for to long.
    Thanks for that video it’s given me a heads up so will be able to dismantle things quicker without having to think to much 👍👍

    Due to the lack of infos for the Transits in Germany, your channel is very helpful. I changed my glowplugs on the same engine. Also cylindre 1 was very tight, but I managed to unloose ist (took a day ;-)). The result at the end: No fault in ECU, all glowplugs with the same resistance, but in coldstart under 15 C the engine is limping for several seconds. The same way as it does before! What can be the reason?

      Have you checked the supply to the plugs is ok? Also injectors can give starting issues in these

    This engine is fitted in the later 2.2 defenders, i've changed glow plugs in one of these and to be honest it was a bit of a nightmare. The engine is fitted length ways and theres a bunch of coolant hoses in the way, access to the EGR valve is dreadful, why on earth did they design them with glow plugs under the inlet manifold??

    • @diydaly
      @diydaly  Год назад +1

      Haha I know what a pain! I’ve got to fit a egr cooler on a ranger soon , the 5cylinder version of this engine same , sideways on and cooler runs across the back 😖

    Hi mate , what would have to be done if the glow plug dig break on removal, and how would you take out the remainder, not to put a damper on things, what if the glow plug thread went wrong, as I had this with a sparkplug, I had to remove the cylinder head and get a helicoil done ,

    • @diydaly
      @diydaly  Год назад +1

      Yes its not ideal! lol , I really didnt want to risk any issues on the night as the van needed to be back on the road.. there's a few tactics id of tried to get it out first but if I did snap I have a laser kit for drilling , repairing & retapping the head..Its a good kit but still can be very tricky to do in suitu.. worst case the cylinder head would need to come off to do it

    • @sliderdriver1
      @sliderdriver1 11 месяцев назад

      Ive had the tip of a plug break off while fighting to get one out! Obviously couldnt tell until it appeared in my hand 😠. Of course it then needed the head off so did that before removing the other 3(which came out, no issues)🤷🏼‍♂️...typical! Id recommend warming the engine up and soaking the plug with plusgas or similar for an hour or so.

    I see noticed the glow plugs have 4.4V written on them. Wouldn't a 12V test voltage damage them? I ask this because i got 2.2V on all 4 glow plug connectors. Also, how long should the glow plug timer run for?

    • @diydaly

      You do need to be careful with some glow plugs as they are not all 12v ; best to use a multi meter really
