If you enjoy this kind of music, Celtic tunes, then Celtic Colours held every year on Cape Breton Island is a festival you *must* attend. Go once, go again. Put it on your bucket list. Been there, loved it. Saw the Beaton family perform, and had a beer at the Rankin family's small pub. The locals are so hospitable, the whiskey is superb, the Cabot Trail may be Canada's finest and most beautiful drive, and, the music is awesome. What's not to love?
Tunes in order: 1. ? Air (0:05) 2. The Humours Of Castlecomer Jig (2:22) 3. Malcolm’s New Fiddle Jig (3:18) 4. Buddy's Order of Canada Jig (4:14) 5. Bog An Lochan Strathspey (5:16) 6. The Tarbolton Reel (5:57) 7. Hull’s Reel (7:04) 8. St. Andrew’s Flight Reel (8:09) 9. The Fermoy Lasses Reel (9:13)
another big fan from France. Not French but living in France. Like others I've watched this hundreds of times. Its what drew me to cape Breton music. If only I could make it over there... it's wonderful. Thank you so much the Beaton Sisters and Jason Roach ( Coig) and Patrick Gillis ( Béolach). Be great to see you in Europe.
You guys are all amazing, this is the music I grew up with in Nova Scotia. Kitchen parties everywhere. My grandfather on the fiddle, 5-6 guitarists, and always Billy the banjo man. From Privateer's, the Palace,, to the Moon Well done, Beaton Sister's:)
People play banjo there? Is it Irish tenor (4-string) or the clawhammer (5-string) bluegrass type? I know fiddle & piano, clearly, predominate on Cape Breton Island, and I’m sure people play other instruments, but it would be interesting if there were more variety-like concertina, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, flute, more whistles, etc. And of course people play highland pipes there, and smallpipes and border pipes are likely played, as well! It is cool, though, how the fiddle really took over in Cape Breton, when it isn’t even the "top" trad instrument in Scotland, despite this style having its roots there. There’s even the giant fiddle statue I believe, in Sydney?
Thanks for the interest! You can purchase their CD on itunes or for the physical CD, please visit cdbaby (dot) com/cd/dawnmargiebeaton. Their website is dawnandmargie (dot) com So happy you enjoyed the clip!!
Patrick Gillis has the cutest most unassuming smile. No matter who I see him backing, it's like he's floored he's hearing genius for the first time, and looks like it's news to him that he can play the guitar and he's pleasantly surprised by himself - I adore his stage presence.
I had the honour of meeting Dawn at a Celtic colours event this year (2022) and I HAD to let her know that I am a huge fan of fiddle music and have watched this video of the group of them at least once a month (many times, more). This is probably the best set of tunes I have heard! I moved back to Nova scotia in 2021, to Cheticamp, and I had a bucket list of musicians that I wanted to see on the Iconic stage of the Doryman..... I have seen MOST of them only two are missing...... Dawn and Margie Beaton. I may need to go visit Mabou to see them play at The Shoe!
Indeed. Playing a right-handed guitar, left-handed. Ashley MacIsaac has always played the fiddle left-handed on a right-handed fiddle. The highest pitch string is on the top rather than the bottom. That's how he has played it since he started fiddle as a kid. It's been noted in interviews I have seen. I think it's a fun way to play strings. I took a lefty guitar and held it right handed and played some lead riffs and worked out the chords, positioning my fingers in reverse for the chord fingerings. It's a neat way to do it. You can technically convert a stringed instrument from a right to left and vice versa. It's more than just re-stringing it upside down, though. The bone piece on the bridge of the body and the bone at the head need to be changed too, as well as other adjustments. That's what I have learned through talking to some luthiers and other guitar tech folk. Some say that in the long run, it isn't that great of a thing to do, though. I'd rather play a lefty guitar upside down based on that info I learned.
Mike supermtamike well spotted mike ,,,,,,,thought a wiz gon daft ,,,,,,,,,I had a friend that played the same ,,,,,sadly no longer with us ,,,,,,,,still miss you terry ,,RIP,,,,
Wow these girls are taking no prisoners here. Talk about "driving er". Piano and guitar awesome.Kicks the crap out of Nashville wannabees.Real talent in good old CB
You speak well for so many of us. " if I could I would, but I can't or so I won't" it's the practice that get ya down, my biggest fans are the furniture in my living room.
Were the pipes banned when the Scots were exiled because this is pipe music on a fiddle absolutely incredible and fires the soul just like the pipes do. Makes one want to jig even if you have one leg.
"It should make you want to practice more!" is a neat thing that I just heard after someone said a similar thing to what you did on the live chat of this year's Celtic Colours.

Came across your comment, I'm very surprised as many ppl in France don't have a clue about CB! I grew up in CB and later lived in Brittany France. :)

Wow, the four of them together are absolutely amazing.
Great performance.

Dawn Beaton...my first fiddle instructor. 🎵😍🎶
Their playing leaves you breathless. I love watching Jason literally attack the piano! One of my favourite performances, for sure!

He's left handed playing a right handed guitar

Maybe that is how he learned to play. I have left handed screwdrivers I can use just as well with my right hand. Imagine that?

Another great Irish music group. I love this music.
Actually, they're from Cape Breton, not Ireland. They play a mixture of Scottish, Cape Breton, and Irish tunes.
The style is from Cape Breton which is mainly Scottish in heritage
Really really awesome!
93,000 views, speaks for itself Merry Christmas
Bravo mesdames!!!
Wonderful!♥️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Through the Mabou Coal Mines' Beatons, but it would have to be a few generations out.
Wow these girls are taking no prisoners here. Talk about "driving er". Piano and guitar awesome.Kicks the crap out of Nashville wannabees.Real talent in good old CB
Now we will see the classical trained musician in poise and the difference between the natural . both work !!!
If I could put as much joy into my piping as these ladies put into their fiddling, I would call myself a piper!
You speak well for so many of us. " if I could I would, but I can't or so I won't" it's the practice that get ya down, my biggest fans are the furniture in my living room.
WOW WOW WOW!!!!
