Great information, and I’m glad to see that you covered PPE. I would like to add that people should keep their pets inside. Right on time. I am presently dealing with a similar problem and was not sure what type of insect it was. Now that I know it is spider mites I can identify it sooner. Questions: 1. How long does the insecticide stays active on the plant? 2. If it rains, does it have to be applied again and how soon? 3. How long before I can shower the plants after applying the insecticide? 4. Should the top soil around the plant be removed and replaced with clean soil? Thank you for such excellent video. It was short and succinct!! Great job!!
Maria Folch I think 2 or 3 hours are enough after you have sprayed it. But better check it out with the garden centre you buy your product from. And they will tell you when to apply it again.
If its something like Neem that is oil based then it will not immediately wash off (you'd have to check label for how often to reapply). As to your soil, you do not need to dig your soil out but you can give the area that is affected a good dusting w/ sulfer powder. This will suffocate them.

I’m so glad you covered the proper safety measures one should take before spraying plants with insecticides. Early in my gardening life I used Malathion on some very persistent spider mites. I did not wear the proper attire an became very sick, because I poisoned myself. I have asthma and had to be taken to the hospital and was there a few days. I’m so thankful that you covered proper use and protection. As always your video gave us all the information for proper use and also gave much needed steps to protect oneself. Thank you Laura and Aaron! You are the best! Also, Aaron you’re just showing us all what a great man, father and husband you are for protecting Laura, the baby and Benjamin from these pesticides. You ROCK!
Laura, you are such a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for running us through all the products and suggestions. Pollinators are such a big deal to me as well, but if your flowers die, what will they have to munch on? Lol I think being consistent for a while will help. 🤞You guys are the best! 💕🌻
We deal with spider mites every year. Great knowing how to battle them next time. I would have never thought about using 3 products in succession but it makes total sense. And great job, Aaron, on modeling! You didn’t move around too quickly which makes a huge difference. Excellent video!
That is exactly what I was going to write! I'll just like your comment and thank you for it! This was just the best info for spraying for any insects (just about)! Saving to my library, now! ❤🙂
I needed this video so badly. I'll be watching this video often as a great reminder of what to do each year. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I love your knowledge and trust you.
I’m so glad your covering this. So many people don’t bother reading the labels or do research before they pick up a bottle. I’ve heard more people tell me they sprayed neem oil and damaged the leaves. I’ll ask did you do it in the middle of the day. Yup.....ugh and also they didn’t think about the beneficials 🐝 We deal with Broad mites( spider mites cousin) that like humid conditions and in our greenhouse is our nemesis.
I was watering my plants today and I noticed on one of my marigold plants had a dusty look to it. Then, I noticed it was webbing. I touched it and tons on small red dots transferred to my fingers. I immediately thought spider mites. Had I not watched garden answer, I would have had no idea. Thanks Laura and Aaron!
This is so helpful! I live in southern Arizona which is usually hot and dry but even our rainy monsoon season was a hot, dry heaven for spider mites this year and I lost over half of my little back yard garden to spider mites and white fly this summer. I didn’t know about the eggs not being killed by the spray and needing to change the spray from week to week. I am hopeful that armed with this information next year will go much better for my garden.
I have had great success eradicating my indoor spider mites with a strong rosemary infusion. Break up a fresh rosemary branch and steep it in hot water. Transfer the tea to a spray bottle and spray the infested plant as often and as thoroughly as you please. I'm not sure how well this would work for outdoor plants, but it's worth a try before resorting to chemicals.
Been waiting for this one! We planted 25 arborvitaes this year, and we don’t want to lose them. They’re still small and tender. I’ll be putting this one in my library. 🥰
Just started planting an orchard and have somethings in a sunroom. Couldn't figure out what was wrong with our cold hardy kiwi until a little late - mites. The learning curve is so steep with learning to take care of a variety of plants to make the healthy, muchless with things are going wrong - Japanese Beetle, carpenter ants, mites and everything! This channel has become such a resource of balanced information. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this. I checked your older videos on spider mites recently to diagnose and treat my garden. This is a much more comprehensive video and now I have a regimen to hopefully prevent an infestation next year.
I had never even heard of spider mites before watching your videos, and I certainly had never seen them. You post this video today and I proceed to find spider mites on one of my heucheras!!! Needless to say, I am rewatching this video and taking notes!
13:14 was super helpful: to know exactly how you were going to tackle it and what order you were going to use the products in. My only wish would be to know why Bonide told you to use those specific products, why in that order, and a video of how you applied EACH product. Like, can you spray the plant TOO MUCH? Thank you so so much for sharing.
Hi Laura and Aaron! This was so helpful. It is so nice that you covered all of these products so thoroughly. I know from the comments that everyone really appreciated it. I've purchased several of the products that you've mentioned and have been very pleased with the results. Thankfully I don't have a very big problem with spider mites, but you never know. Thank you so very much for sharing all of the important information with us!
Impecable timing! My tomato plant is suffering because of these little pests, was already planning to spray neem oil tomorrow morning, so glad I watched this because it’ll now happen this evening. And I’m going to start spraying the leaves with water every morning, especially since we’re going back up to 100+ degrees later this week.
Neem oil has been so effective in my garden. I purchased the concentrate and I make my own spray. Use it ! before! Problems begin. But, certainly after u start spraying, stay on a schedule.
Those little red boogers are killing my superbells! I’m in zone eight it’s already in the 80s and humid so much for dry climates and spider mites. Thanks, appreciate you Laura.
Thank you Laura! I’m currently battling spider mites in my gardens too. BTW - Arron is a fantastic model/demonstrator! 😂 ... you two make a frat team. Stay well and keep up the great work.
Your videos are never too long, you always make watching them pleasant and informative. Thank you for posting this, so very helpful. I hope you're all doing well 💗 💓 💕 💜 💖 💛
Just found your channel today and have watched sooo many back to back. You are *EXCELLENT*. So much information (the side note comments you make add so much beneficial and helpful information - your videos impart so much knowledge because of this and the way you teach). Also love how real and genuine you are in the videos.
Very good video. I wanted to add something about the proper respirator to use when using many off the shelf pesticides. Laura mentioned that you needed a P100 filter (that was the pink/magenta part of the respirator that she showed). That will reduce the amount of mist that you could inhale to almost nothing, but the pesticide may vaporize from the surface of the filter. So the respirator needs to be equipped with a pesticide or organic vapor cartridge to which the P100 filter is attached. The one she held up in the video was a combination P100 (HEPA) acid vapor/organic vapor respirator cartridge (yellow stripe), which will also work.
Thank you so much! This was awesome. I have just learned that the problem with my mini spruce is spider mites. I had no idea what to buy. I found your video & learned SO MUCH including WHEN to spray so as not to disturb the pollinators. You are so knowledgeable and your enthusiastic style is very engaging. Thank you!
Very thorough video. You covered so many things that other people leave out . I had to go to the stores and look up ingredients to make sure I wasn’t buying products that would make the mites worse . For instance, Imidacloprid makes mites worse . So many sprays make claims to fight spider mites . But you google the ingredients and find out that it will make the mites worse . Then there are products that plain don’t work even if they claim they will . Thanks for taking time to mention so many options and how to apply them 😊
last month my two rose plants were infested with spider mites. One plant has almost lost all of its leaves. I sprayed them with organic neem oil based insecticide after every 5-6 days. After spraying 4 or 5 times I finally got rid of them. Yayy
Thank you Laura and Aaron. What you said near the end is so true and it is awesome that you took your experiences and did your best to make sure others know exactly what to do with what and how much and how often. Example the 3 different sprays and the stuff to help the spray stick and not run off. Never heard of that before. Stay safe and healthy everyone.
Thank you for doing this. I didn't realize why it's best to spray at night. I have just invested in BT and a hose pump sprayer so I needed to hear this today. I was moving some plants just last night and flicked off my arm several spider mites. Now I know what they look like and what I need to get. Thanks so much. Hope you get those maternity pants today.
Thank you for making this video. It was full of helpful information such as not spraying two different oils within 30 days of each other. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with spider mites because I live a very humid climate (Eastern Shore of Maryland). But if I ever do have to deal with them, now I will have an excellent resource to reference.
This was a great video! So well done and covered all the points needed! We’re in southeast Ohio but dealing with the same garden issues. Thank you! Just love your channel! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! Ive lost two supertunias have two hanging by a thread. Lost a few bacopas. Im seeing signs of damage on almost all supertunia bacopa hydrangia dalias! Ive been using neem and then dish soap bc weekly neem wasnt working anymore! Im seeing signs of multiple types of bugs. Noone wants to talk about anything that could harm the good bugs. So thank you for explaining it all!❤
Thank you so much! I thought my plants were just sad from the heat and wildfire smoke we’ve had in CA, but realized it’s spider mites - ALL over the yard. I know what I’ll be doing the next few weekends...
Thank you so much for your video. I have an infestation on my crepe myrtles. Was so afraid to spray them because I have bluebird families but don't want to lose my trees. Will try neem oil first. Congratulations on the baby! I've been viewing your videos several years now and have learned so much!
Thank you Thank you Thank you for all the detail on each product. Knowing very little about spider mites and such it is very beneficial to a novice for sure.
Well done. I am forwarding this to my spouse. Sigh... I have tried for 50 years to educate him, however, "what could SHE know." is the usual response. Thank you!
I’m on a major learning curve for gardening 👩🌾 Didn’t know there was sooo much to look out for! 😅Thanks to channels like yours, I’m learning quickly! Thank you
Slowly I am learning how to glow plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables, I am finding gardening very therapeutic and inspiring, spending time outside with my hands in the earth while observing nature grow.
Good to know all the different insecticides you can use. I put dawn in my sprayer & got most of them in 1 spray. Gonna start spraying once a week. I didn’t think about eggs.
Discovered this video and the timing was perfect as a spider mite jumped on me while I was watering plants. Great video! Thanks so much for doing this. I always enjoy watching you! You do such a nice job with your videos!
Question: I found on my purple conflower that I have spider mites, would cutting this down for fall eliminate them? Or should I need to spray my soil for the eggs? Or would the eggs be killed from our harsh winter? I am in Central Minnesota. THANK YOU Laura!!
I hope she answers this one! She might suggest that if you do cut them down for winter that you spray something like Neem oil in early spring to discourage the population from growing again.
Dahlia grower here & it something we have had to fight throughout the years. Though Neem & some of the other things she mentions do help once you notice mites, we found the best thing for treating spider mites on the soil was sulfer powder. It sufficates them & prevents them from traveling to other plants. Being that coneflowers are a perennial you could definitely go ahead & cut of all of the blooms (now that it is Fall) - stem & all - but leave the mound of greenery/base that they grow out of. They will come back again next year. Be sure to treat the base of the plant as she indicated. One thing we also found is that spidermites love dry soil & hate wet, so we started making sure our ground around the dahlias got saturated good (once dahlias were established of coarse as tubers are susceptible to rot) & surface never left to dry.
Thank you for this highly informative video. I appreciate how open and genuine you are about gardening issues AND how you research and talk to experts to bring us the best info possible. Good luck with the spider mite eradication.
I’ve been dealing with these pests for years and finally hopeful I have it under control and my garden will thrive next year. Spraying plants with a strong stream of water frequently is what I’ve found is most successful and easiest to manage. I did spray two different times. But pairing it with water is great!
Hi Laura. I battling spider mites..I also have powdery mildew under the leaves on my camellias..I use Neem oil..but it's hard to get underside of the leaf because of the size of my plants. Very informative video!
🎶 The Neverending Story 🎶 is always in my head when spraying for bugs. Except Diatomaceous Earth - that’s 🎶 Another One Bites The Dust 🎶 And another one gone And another one gone Another one bites the dust 🕷 🕷 🕷
I've got a pretty bad infestation of spider mites in my greenhouse (melons, peppers and eggplant). I went with Monterey product that has pyrethrin and neem. Good to know about not using sulfur and oils close together. I double checked and mine doesn't have any sulfur and can be used up to day of harvest so that's good. Gave the first treatment last night after removing a lot of the damaged leaves on the melons.
Was so waiting for this video! Thanks so much! Have lost watermelon several years to spider mites, thought I had some disease but it was spider mites. Now I have been treating them with need oil but will increase types of control and start sooner next year.
What Tracy fr Minnesota said - from NWIiowa here. Also,,,,THANK YOU for ALL the info you provided on this!! SO beneficial to us. ALso......LOVE the succulent planter in the back that still looks SO good! I usually have a succulent planter on my deck(thanks to YOU - didn’t think I liked them until you) but did not get that done this year ......did too much other new stuff in the yard....also THANKS TO YOU!!
Thank you so, so much for this video! Spider mites took my herb garden last year. I used Neem Oil frequently but it just didn't work even though I started early enough on this issue. I had no idea they get resistant to the regular treatment, I just thought that Neem Oil isn't effective enough. Now it makes much more sense! I planted a new herb garden this year and will keep on top of it :)
Oldies but goodie. I thought I was getting lucky with the spider mites, and they have now found my barberries, fire bush, and hydrangeas 😢. However I was able to identify the problem just by seeing the plant, thank you for the education
Thank you for talking about spider mites. I have this issue in my garden and have been looking forward to learning about your process. I have a few questions: 1) I understand you use 3 products mentioned in video across 6 weeks. So does each product get used 2x? 2) In a previous video you mentioned targeting spider mites a certain time of year. Does it matter what time of year I start the 6 week regime? 3) on damaged boxwood will leaves heal themselves or is damage permanent? Thanks so much!!! You rock!
Thank you so much for clearing this up for me. Now I know I should try the All Season's for my husband's apple trees. We planted them for Father's Day a year or two ago and, I just noticed that the leaves are being eaten by an insect this year. I read online that a spray of dish detergent and vegetable oil is a good organic spray to try. I will probably start with that. I am so happy that you are being safe ^_^. That's a smile! Oh, and the sticker product makes a lot of sense too.
Can you spray those longer acting pesticides in the dormant months of winter, when it’s not freezing outside, to protect the beneficial bugs? Or would this be completely ineffective?
That was excellent Laura. Thank you. I work at a garden center and I even learned something new today. I don't usually use the synthetic sprays because I don't like them but I think it's imperative that we all know something about them and what they actually do and especially their residual effects. Well done!
This was timely! I was just out in my front garden and noticed tiny spots on a couple of my azaleas. We've had problems with webs in other azaleas but had no idea the two were related. Captain Jacks and Malathion are on my shopping list for my next trip to the garden center. Thank you for this helpful video. What you thought might be boring was exactly what I needed this week!
Thanks so much for taking the time to go into detail on this subject. I just saw this damage and the fine webs on some plants this morning. Heading to the garden center now.
Hi Laura, PLEASE do a video on spiders and their webs out in the garden. I live in the UK where spiders cover everything, and I have always hated gardening just for that reason. There's nothing nice about walking into a cobweb and it covering your face and arms! Or worse, getting a big fat spider on your clothes or hair!!! Please can you explain what you do to clear cobwebs and keep them away, and to discourage spiders from setting up residence in your garden? I'm desperate for some help!
Thank you for all the information. Very helpful. I will inevitably have to refer back to this video as problems arise. There is just so much to know. Each year my garden gets bigger, so do my garden issues. Always nice to have a resource to fall back on.
OMYGOD thank you for this video Laura!! I have most of my houseplants in zippered plastic covered indoor greenhouses and I thought they don't like humidity!! But I have them on my Red Maranta and now they're attacking my Peace Lilly that has FINALLY flowered🤦♀️😭!! I've been spraying them every three days with insecticidal soap but not working, I really hope this works!!❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼
Is there a wind threshold when you wouldn’t spray? I plan to spray and then the day comes and it’s windy, usually 10 to 15 mph. Thanks for making learning so enjoyable!

You ROCK!
I like the responsible way you covered the more toxic synthetic chemicals.
So much needed information ~ this segment will go directly into my library.
Yup.....ugh and also they didn’t think about the beneficials 🐝
We deal with Broad mites( spider mites cousin) that like humid conditions and in our greenhouse is our nemesis.
The way you broke it down is so helpful! I don't find Bonide's website to be as helpful as it could be.
New gardener here . This video is a big help . Thank you so much
This is so helpful!
Your video was by far the best explained and the most informative. Thanks, subcribed
As an environmentalist and longtime sub, thanks for sharing more info on safety for our pollinators!
Thank you so much for talking about these. So helpful! Not only for the spider mites but just helps in knowing how to chose proper pesticides.
Just finished planting 400 tulip bulbs. You are my inspiration 💕
This video made me itchy thinking of those tiny spiders 🤨 Thank you for the video and the itch!
Thanks Laura. Your videos are never too long.
Best video regarding gardener sprays! I have had a bad infestation of spider mites this year. Will be more diligent next year. So helpful!
Thank you for this. I did not realize spider mites was what I have been battling this year.
You covered it perfectly! I specially liked how you started at DEFCON 5 and worked your way up. I love some sensible gardening for sure.
Thats why I love ladybugs they help me with my spider mite problem on my junipers
@@gabrielag9846 Sounds like a plan?

Very informative and helpful - particularly the idea of cycling the sprays so the pests don't become resistant. Brilliant tip! Thank you!
Definitive the best video I have ever seen about the subject mites, here spider mites, and the treatment.
Yeah but not during the hottest part of the day.
@@Bamboo4U2 Right, Like Laura said, only at dusk!
@@bridgetalbers2066 she mentioned treatment at dusk. She didn't remind people to soak/wet their plants at dusk. Or did I miss thst?
@@Bamboo4U2 Jake, I am wondering the same. How soon to shower them. Surely, not right after or the treatment would be useless.
@@mariafolch8067 i think the shower/soaking thing is done preventatively, before or after the problem has been resolved or isn't present.
Hi Laura. I battling spider mites..I also have powdery mildew under the leaves on my camellias..I use Neem oil..but it's hard to get underside of the leaf because of the size of my plants. Very informative video!
🎶 The Neverending Story 🎶 is always in my head when spraying for bugs.
Except Diatomaceous Earth - that’s 🎶 Another One Bites The Dust 🎶
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust

I’ve been dealing with spider mites in my garden since August. I’ve been using neem oil, but I need to try something new. Thank you for the overview!
Oldies but goodie. I thought I was getting lucky with the spider mites, and they have now found my barberries, fire bush, and hydrangeas 😢. However I was able to identify the problem just by seeing the plant, thank you for the education
This is the best organised and most informative spider mite video I've seen. Thank you. 🌱💚
This is a wonderful primer on spider mites, you are so thorough! I appreciate your channel and all your hard work!😊
Thank you for talking about spider mites. You rock!
Finally it’s here. Thanks for the solution for it.
Well done!
Really appreciate the coverage of protective gear, esp the respirator. Didn't even cross my mind! 📝
Your parents are super I love the shop and the lady that was helping is a big help.
Laura, this video really clarified a lot about chemicals. Thanks!
Definitely the most informative video I’ve seen on these types of pesticides. Thank you!!!
Thank you for the info re:spider mite. The cats in the videos makes me very happy. Please do a video on a day in the life of your cats.
And protection glasses! Thanks Laura, really appreciate the information! Hugs🤗🤗💜
Thank you for all the information. Very helpful. I will inevitably have to refer back to this video as problems arise. There is just so much to know. Each year my garden gets bigger, so do my garden issues. Always nice to have a resource to fall back on.
I think this is the year of spider mites. Thanks for sharing.
Optimally, no wind is best.
