  • More than 100 recruits to the Brigade of Gurkhas have taken part in a cultural visit to London, the first time many of the men have experienced Britain's capital.
The trip forms an important part of the recruits' training experience, offering them an opportunity to test their ongoing grasp of English and take in some of the city's iconic landmarks.
While on the visit, the soldiers were treated to tea and biscuits with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

There was a group of Gurkhas out in Newcastle this past Tuesday - immaculate, polite, humble. I bumped into them several times. They do themselves proud.

As an Aussie I've endless respect for the Gurkhas. Grew up in Hong Kong and they used to come and kick footballs around with us on sports day in primary school. Great blokes. My ex-RAAF parents used to say there was no reason to worry about 1 million PLA soldiers over the border when there were a few thousand Gurkhas in HK. They may have been joking but I believed them.

I think Brits and Europeans in general really like any type of Southeast Asian "looking" people (even if they are Nepali). I think you can do no wrong by them. Probably because so many Europeans go to Asia for vacation and have good memories of the place and the cultural values are similar.

Our old Empire did lots of things wrong but it was rarely stupid, after one war with the Gurkhas it decided whatever happens we want these guys on our side next time! So a peace deal was done and This has worked for over 150 years. The Indian army has several regiments too.

If only all British soldiers had the dedication and attitude of the Ghurkas and their Nepali training staff it would be a very different army and would have so much more public respect and support.

Poor lads don't know what they're letting themselves in for. Gurkhas are traditionally first in line for cannon fodder, even before the Irish or the rest of them, the brave Brits go last when all is clear.
