How Germany could have won World War I

  • What if Germany in 1914 would have focused on Russia in the opening days of the conflict while keeping weaker forces in the West against France, would have not invaded Belgium, would have accepted a quick armistice with Russia, what if Austria would have granted Trento and Gorizia to Italy, with Italy joining the Central Empires?? And what would have happened in the following years, if Triple Entente would have lost the First World War?

How Germany could have won WW1:
    1) immediately surrender to the French Republic - become a province of France
    2) use higher population to win elections in France - change country name to Germany, change capital back to Berlin
    3) own Russia
    4) profit lol

Wilhelm installed the first welfare state with social security. He cared about its people. I think he wd have gotten his colonies he desperatly wanted like france and england - he wd have been happy. the split up the middle east amongst each other resulting in the middle east conflict we have today.Like all the other monarchs- it was about power and overestimation. However germany indeed was a military superpower
Beating russia and france. The brits were starving them....
sure wilhelm had an urge for recognition- as his mother never accepted him due to its handicapt arm. So maybe if she did, that wd have been a different story.....narcissm is build by lack of emotional needs met and overdtimulation on performance.
I dont know if he was, but they dont see clearly. Bismarck kept saying
      Usa speaks english never forget.

Open a history book please. Germany declared war on France, after failing to impose humiliating conditions of surrendering the French forts alongside the border and occupying the French regions in order not to attack France. Many german well known historians like Fisher in his numerous studies showed that Germany was preparing war for many years and was doing all it could to start the war before the peace conference in 1915 and before that Russian would go in a full military potential. With the Septemberprogramm they already planned to annex parts of France and Belgium before the war. The attempts from the Kaiser to cause a war by threatening France during the two Maroc crisis were a failure. I am alway so surprised so see so many people making comments without any kind of knowledge about their own country history.

The not invading Belgium strategy was called the Moltke Plan, which involved holding the Rhine between Belgium and Switzerland with 5 armies and turning against the Russians with 6. This war plan is available in AGEOD’s “End All Wars” grand strategy PC game about WW1. It does not stop GB from entering the war however, it just delays their entry. There is no guarantee Britain would not have joined the Allies because of a non violation of Belgian neutrality. The Anglo-French alliance via the 1904 Entente Cordiale was still in effect. They would have joined at some point earlier rather than later.

Or Germany could do a 180 and commit to an alliance with Russia instead of AH. This would likely mean an alliance between France and AH, but AH would be surrounded and get defeated easily. Russia would get more influence in the Balkans and Germany could probably get Austria like they did in 1938.

Prussia held out against basically all of Europe, it's only ally UK did basically nothing on the continent, only overseas fighting and maybe blockades. The land army was almost entirely prussia vs everyone else. It ended up being a narrow draw and almost a loss, but considering it was against the entire continent and germany wasn't even United, and some germans even fought against them (Austria), that was amazing. From the early 1700s-ww1, Prussia (and later Germany) lost only once to a once in a lifetime general (napoleon) during the worst time for Prussia. That's an amazing record.

I'm going to be focusing on the problems I find in this hypothetical scenario, and will go by the timeline presented in this video.
    1. Britain would've entered the war either way, as not only did the government want to support France, but if the Central Powers won the Weltkrieg, Britain would be without allies in Europe, and in a sea of German influence. If the Entente won the Great War, Britain once again would be friendless, leaving the Empire open to isolation. The Jerrys had calculated Britain would join the war with or without them invading Belgium.
    2. Austria-Hungary in our timeline couldn't capitulate the Serbs for a year, only doing so with the help of her allies. If A-H focuses on the Russian front, the Bosnians, Croatians and Slovenes would rise up, as it would look like the Empire abandoned them, leaving the gates of Vienna open to a Serbian invasion. Although the Serbian army wasn't the mightiest, the French would supply them and even send their own forces to help them out. Italy, seeing the A-H-Italian border relatively undefended, would pounce on this opportunity, marching to Vienna as the bulk of the enemies army is out there crippling Russia. Although the Italian army was capable, it couldn't compare to the armies of the Great Powers. French supplies would bolster their strength, forcing the A-H to withdraw a sizable chunk of their army to fight the Italians, Serbs, French and the rebels.
    3. A-H would refuse to give up the territory they owned to Italy. Their own ally requesting their hard-earned land they fought for would be unfathomable for them.
    4. Why would Russia declare war on another nation when they themselves were fighting the Deutsches Reich and A-H? Seems a bit counter-productive.
5.Why did the Turks start the Armenian Genocide? They only did it in our timeline because they were loosing on all fronts, and they used the Armenians as a scapegoat to blame all their defeats onto them (Kinda like the Nazi Party when you think about it).
    6. Britain entering the war after the French and Russians faced heavy casualties is a bit unrealistic. Either they join the war on France's side at the start, or they join the Central Powers after staying out of it, realizing they have more to gain by joining the "winning" side.
    7. This might be just a mistake but why would the Toms leave the force in Kut alone, severing reinforcements from coming in. The rivers are their only way of supplying the besieged force or break the siege entirely.
    8. The Central Powers just left Serbia and Montenegro to their own devices, knowing the British and French fleets are strong enough to supply and send their own forces there to help Serbia and Montenegro advance deeper into Bulgaria and Austro-Hungary? And the Balkan entente just sat there, doing nothing? The Serbs wouldn't collapse that easily, fighting in the mountains and having a home-field advantage would allow them to survive for longer.
    9. I believe the Russian high command wouldn't be that obtuse to notice 1,000,000 of their own men could easily be encircled in own quick advancement by the enemy. Considering they could pull of a "great retreat" from Poland, they could probably achieve the same results _and_ not lose 1,000,000 men and all the equipment the had.
    10. You're telling me the Central Powers wouldn't impose harsh conditions onto the crippled Russians? They Russians would throw in the towel either way, so they don't have enough major power at the negotiating table to not pay war reparations and hand over even more territory.
    11. While I agree the Germans couldn't really occupy all of their occupied territory, there's the rest of the Central Powers, as well as the option of turning them into puppets to control them. If the Soviets managed to industrialize, whats stopping from the Germans from making them into urbanizing them to match the rest of Germany.
    12. I don't get why it takes 1 year for the Americans to transfer troops to Europe. Just because one ship is sunk doesn't mean the other hundreds of ships can't be launched. The U.S.A has enough factories to produce the same amount of weapons that were lost to the sea in a week at it's slowest rate. When Corporal Hitler was wounded at age 27, the year was 1916, and by the time the Americans would arrive it would either be 1917 or 1918. Also remember the blockade? The Germans are probably suffering from malnutrition weakening them further.
    13. How can Germany outperform both France and Britain. Both have huge empires which means more men can be mustered. They also have more resources. In fact, the British empire alone in 1914 had over 5 times the amount of people living in its borders than Germany did in 1914. France and her colonies go toe-to-toe with Germany in terms of population size. With more people working at factories and fighting in the army, the Germans should be running out of resources save for Coal and Steel. I suppose Ottoman and Romanian Oil and Ukrainian wheat keeps the German war machine running, but as we saw earlier the British have taken the Mesopotamian oil fields controlled by the Ottomans, and Ukraine is ravaged by war as Zvallid.
    14. When the French attacked in sheer desperation against the German lines but to no avail, where is the Commonwealth? British morale would be higher than French morale, and they could probably slightly push the Germans back.
    15. In theory, the British and Americans could wage a brutal war against the Central Powers. Fighting in the Middle Eastern desert, landing in Sicily, and taking back French Colonies, but signing the armistice was a smart move.
I might have over-analyzed your work a bit to much, and I hope I have done nothing more than use constructive criticism to help you improve your work. To summarize: a bit unrealistic. Still, great video. I appreciate the hard work you have put into this video

The US had not really a great military at the time they entered the war.
Actually they had to start to build up the army in the real timeline at the moment they entered it. The war against the US started in 1917 and it took them until fall of 1918 to be the force who stopped the germans.
      13
Colonies are usually not ones because they chose to. They are ones because they are suppressed by a stronger force. If the french or brits would have used the possible manpower of their colonies to fight for them, they would have lost their colonies in no time.
      15
In reality the US joined the war because the germans promised Mexico to support them against the US if they would start a war against them. In this timeline, that would not be possible, so it is rather unrealistic for them to join the war against Germany. They werent really keen on fighting abroad that time.

      1. I agree with you on my twelfth point. However, building an army of a million is feasible for a nation as populated and industrialised as the US. In our timeline yes, the Americans came through only at the very end. Any number of men helps, and in our timeline American men were sent to British and French battalions, as their numbers were small and couldn't make up their own unit.
In our timeline many Africans fought against each other in the Great War. They didn't successfully revolt; in fact the British were at their greatest colonial extent after war, as they added some German colonies and added them to her collection. Many people from British Raj headed out to the Western front. 1 million in fact. And even then, if no colonial men were to be sent to the front, they could still be working in the factories and growing food for the army.
The Zimmerman telegram was the frosting on the cake for American intervention. Jerry's cable to America was severed by the Tommys, and all information that reached America was controlled by Tommy. This means the Brits could over exaggerate everything the Germans did, and the Public and the media would believe it, which further ignited America's passion for war. The unrestricted submarine warfare the Jerry's used hit American ships or sunk ships with a large number of Americans on board, adding more coal for the fire of war to eat.

    • @NYG5
      @NYG5 7 лет назад +70

zvallid because Italy was bound by treaty to assist Germany/Austria in case any of the Great Powers declared war on them. The Central Powers didn't declare war on the whole world, they declared war on Serbia, which Made Russia DoW Austria, which made Germany DoW Russia, which made France DoW Germany, which made Germany attack France through Belgium, which made Britain DoW Germany. So really, the Central Powers only declared war on teo or three countries, not the whole world.
Besides, the point is that had Italy honored its original part of the Triple Alliance, France would have had to fight a two front war, and Austria would have only fought on one front. The whole stalemate on the Western Front may have never happened, and the war may have ended much sooner. The Central Powers came close to winning the war, Italy may have been just enough to prevent it from becoming 4 years of insanity.

    • @zvallid

zvallid nobody declared war on france, france declared war on the central powers, honoring their part of the Triple Entente.
That's beside the point, though. France honored its treaties. Britain honored it's treaties. Everyone honored their treaties, except for Italy, who balked and then betrayed their former allies. The Central Powers held out against "the rest of the world" and almost won, but at great cost to everyone involved. Had the Italians added to the strength of the Central Powers instead of draining it, the war could have been over much quicker and with less draconian peace settlements, removing the prerequisites for the second war.

    • @zvallid

  • @nixogen7810
    @nixogen7810 2 года назад +4

🤓I guess I'm the 'um actually' guy now.
The idea for video is going East First. The line of reasoning is: They would've won if Germany had dedicated its forces against Russia, not France. After all, the Germans beat Russia IRL, and no invasion of Belgium means no early British involvement. If Russia fell, France would be on its own. And, obviously, more men against Russia means they could collapse super early! France would be forced to surrender. Maybe after they can go through Belgium and take Paris. While initially a sound line of thinking, further research disproves it.
As a brief overview, German commanders had planned to deploy eastward from as early as the 1880s [1]. It was wargamed several times, the idea being swift destruction of Russia and a quick redeployment to France. Similar to what Moltke did in 1914 but reversed. Many commanders feared during this planning that it would be impossible to defeat if German forces didn't destroy Russia within the first few months. Generals such as Schlieffen, Moltke the Elder, and Waldersee supported this hypothesis, mainly because of Napoleon's campaign in the region. However, Schlieffen scrapped it due to the concern that it was not possible, and it was dumped by Moltke the Younger due to the problem that the Anglo-French Entente was a more significant threat.
Had Moltke the Younger followed these plans; the result would likely be just as they thought. Russia in the early stages of WWI proved that it could sustain massive amounts of damage and the Germans couldn't capitalize on it. Germany deployed 1 field army to East Prussia, the Russians attacked with 2. German forces had superiority in everything ranging from firepower to doctrine. The effective combat strength of a German to Russian division was about 1:1 1/2. The total destruction at Tannenburg led to a massive Russian loss against an equal/superior enemy but the Germans were unable to capitalize due to terrible logistics. [2][3] If one German field army suffered from insane supply issues and was unable to capitalize on victories (that could've led to the destruction of 2 Russian armies), what makes 3-4 a reasonable amount to destroy Russia in just a few months? Germany would simply be caught in a grinding campaign in Russia with so many men, characterized by terrible logistics. The maneuverability shown in the actual Eastern Front of WWI wouldn't be present due to the sheer amount of German forces there.
In the west, France would have a massive numerical advantage. Nearly 5 French Field Armies would concentrate against 1-3 German Field Armies. Although France in the Battle of the Frontiers showed its lack of capability to break through determined German defenders, it did not have the insane numerical superiority demonstrated here. [4] The war would not result in a German victory, and Britain would likely become involved in the war before a likely Russian collapse later in the war. A negotiated peace would occur, but France would not fall and the peace would not be in Germany's favor.

I like how in this timeline Europe becomes a grouping of countries run by a cartoonish conglomerate of autocrats, landed nobles, fascists, and military dictators and the comments have people going "Wow, this truly is a better world, like and comment if you love großgermaniums"
A fascist France, a fascistic Russia probably ruled by Kornilov or some other White Guard troika and under the influence of gangs like the Black Hundreds, squaring off against an Imperial autocratic Germany and a fascist Italy for control over Europe - sounds like a bright timeline to me...

    • @gabrielperez-ze9tk
      @gabrielperez-ze9tk 4 года назад

In reality Italy was probably made to be fascist because the video maker thought it would be interesting, in reality if they won in this manner they probably wouldv'e stuck with the monarchy. Even then, Mussolini was only terretorially ambitious, he wasnt a horrific ruler for his own people.
Germany would've likely done much better in this timeline, saving many people from a lot of suffering. Most important would be the jews, who likely would have been lightly oppressed but still free to live their lives in germany.
France would not go ultra-nationalist, perhaps going communist (syndicalist or other offshoot), but certainly not going on a warpath with germany. It would just be impossible! if britain lost nothing it would stay a parliament, and wouldnt help a socialist france, making any invasion of germany impossible.
Now, imperial germany would certainly try and help the tsars, as the royal families were connected through blood. With this in mind, there would still be a civil war in russia, but with german help it likely would stay autocratic, and not that disgusting mess that the white guard was.
at the end of the day, if the nazis Dont take power, a lot of lives are saved period. If there is no second world war, even better! If there is no stalin, well then youve just seen around 100 million lives that can go on living.
Japan would still japan in this timeline, but people in europe would see a much better life in this alternate timeline. as for the rest of the world, well that is very difficult to unpack, as it would depend on the policies of the colonial powers

When I originally studied WW1 what I originally thought is that the Central powers could have won by just simply not invading belgium, and playing defensive on the western front and offensive on the eastern front. UK doesnt get into the war which means no blockade which means no torpedoing of merchant vessels and thus no reason for the US to join and thus the central powers can easily win the eastern front, then after getting the resources from western russia, focus on france (I quickly typed this up and there will probably be multiple spelling and grammar mistakes, my apologies if you are annoyed by that)

Germany stands no chance in this ww2, if their fleet only “seriously rivals Britain” than it stands absolutely no chance against the US and Japanese fleets and China and Italy are both terrible allies, even if Italy is a little more powerful it would still likely be the subject of terrible military leadership and internal issues, the Russians probably wouldn’t be as powerful as our timeline but would still field quite a large army and would also probably have Japanese reinforcements later in the war, the Americans and British would wipe the floor with Germany since they already have a foothold in Europe and the Americans easily outclass the Germans in industry and population even if the Germans had Austria and southern Belgium.

You are playing too much Europa Universalis 4 (or a similar game). Really.
What happened in WWI is simple : Germany had the upper hand, but the Trench warfare stopped the front. Reality is so simple. Most of your "offensives" are a copy of the first part of the war, when Germany could advance easily, but unless Germany started to use their few tanks with almost perfect efficience (which took almost 3 years to the Triple-Entente), the western front would have remained unchanged.
Also, you consider that Belgium will stay neutral (ok, let's accept it), but you delay the Schlieffen Plan for TWO YEARS and expect the same outcome ? With TWO YEARS to prepare and with the trenchs used for one year, Belgium would have delayed the german offensive.
And at 11:03, could you tell us how the front line moves so much with the trenches ? And how the french side waits when they can outflank Germany easily ? Basically, your video tells us :
    1) If Germany wins all the battles
    2) If France, Great-Britain and Belgium are stupid.
    3) If the russian revolution happen 2 years earlier than what really happened.
    4) If the Lusitania was sinked 1 year later.
Germany wins the war. Too much if's to me.

Jeremy M It was also the pearl Harbor bombing that really pushed America into the war. If Japan never bombed the harbor the chance of it would be smaller and I think another reason was that Hitler had sent a telegram to Mexico to help him take America and win the war and if they won they would get something. Great Britain got the message and told America about it which was another reason. So if pearl Harbor, the message and the ship sinking America might not of went to war.

Germany not conducting the Schlieffen offensive in 1914 would have seemed very foolish at the time. One of the main reasons the war escalated to quickly was the necessity of getting this offensive off the ground as soon as possible and mobilization plans reflected this. Now we know it didn't work out, but in August of 1914 the Germans were very confident in their plans.

The Allies (British Empire, France and Italy) were the Signatories and Depositaries of the Treaty of Serves, "Partitioning" the Ottoman Empire. Romania was also benefited by the treaty.

At the outset of World War One, it wasn't at all clear that the Netherlands would remain neutral. Still furious with Britain for taking over their South African colonies, many Dutch people - including some government figures - wanted to side with Germany. If the Dutch had supported or even joined in the German invasion of Belgium and France, then it might have gone easier for the Central Powers. Further, if the US had remained isolationist, which could well have happened had the Germans not antagonised America on several occasions, then the defeat of Russia would have freed up millions of German soldiers to join the fight on the Western Front against Britain and France, already suffering badly against the Germans and their Dutch allies. Just one of the ways in which I think the Central Powers - or at least Germany - could have won WW1, although really it was anyone's game until the battle of Amiens in August 1918. After that, though, the Germans just couldn't recover and the renewed Allied offensive was able to defeat them

The Netherlands never wanted to join any side if they joined the Allies for example Germany would have smashed them and if they would have joind the centrals The netherlands would probably be blockaded by the british navy and the Dutch could even lose there colonies to the Allies

    • @AnnalOfHistory
      @AnnalOfHistory 8 лет назад +2

+Fake Name The Netherlands were much more useful to the Germans as neutrals then as an ally. It allowed supplies to be shipped from warring nations and other neutrals into her ports, and more often then not some of those supplies would end up in German hands. The ports could easily be blockaded, the dutch army was rather small and ill-equipped, and the population as a whole didn't want to go to war.
To keep the United States out then Germany would need to not go with un-restricted submarine warfare and of course not send the Zimmerman telegram. Even still, it wouldn't be enough for them to win the war. Sooner or later riots and mutinies or famine would erupt in Germany as they did OTL. The credit and loans given to the Entente by the United States was much more decisive then the actual troop count. It only sped up the process.

Austria Hungary would have never collapsed in this time line. They collapsed because of massive instability caused by lots of food shortages from the blockade. This resulted in the loss of power of the monarchy and thus the splitting of the empire. With France getting conquered in 1916 and England joining the war only the previous year, I really cannot imagine the food shortages being anywhere near as bad as in real life.
Also the reparations would probably not be as heavy on France. They were heavy on germany because Germany posed a serious threat to France. In this case it seems like France was just banging there head on a bunch of weaker German Divisions (says in the description) before Germany destroyed them.

Era quasi impossibile che al’ L’Austria-Ungheria non crollasse anche perché ogni suo vicino desiderava sotto sotto che crollasse

At least portugal has a pretty safe position... how the hell greece didn't join the war? bulgaria italy and ottomans next to her.
They all casually ignored her, and UK casually didn't join the war... and french casually lost every battle without killing a single man xD
      Just nope

Ireland gains independence yet by borders drawn by you allows north Ireland to remain British territory…would you allow Tunisia or the Arabs to forever hold Syracuse but call it Italian territory?
