Great, thanks for the clarification. I’ve been watching a lot of international level competition and I see a lot of the positioning with both hands kept low. I guess it makes sense that you don’t have to worry about quick jab punches to the face in TKD sparring, but I began to wonder if that was the “correct” positioning. Now that you’ve described it as an advanced, not for beginners type thing, I know to leave it alone! ;)
Great video! Im not sure if its allowed in taekwondo, but what i do is have the lead hand paralel and close to the lead leg, and the rear hand on top of it but at chin level.. Like ifni was holding a stick between both palms... The style i do allows lowkicks and catching, so... By doing that, i can actually catch most kicks, deflect them right away(like a sticky parry) and come back with m own strike
@Koghulan Jey actually, roundhouses are easy to catch with this method... But yeah, hook punches are impossible for me at least... Thats why i try to keep kicking distance all the time
What about the guard where they have the front hand up to cover head shots and the back hand is like across the middle to block body shots, the front arm is straight up and down and the other arm is straight side to side, it’s like the front elbow and the back hand are together, making an L shape, 90 degrees angle, or 1/2 a box, so the front elbow and back hand cover the ribs, the back arm covers the stomach and back elbow covers the other ribs, the front hand is about chin level to protect the face, so the front hand is mostly to block high hits and to punch to the head with jab, back fist, ridge hand, or hammer fist, the back hand mostly to block low shots mostly to the body and can hit with a cross, reverse punch, or hook
Question Alex. I know you have some Muay Thai and boxing experience and in your MMA video you maintain a higher guard than guard # 1 in this video. I know WTF TKD does not allow hand strikes to the face but wouldn't the more practical MMA type guard work just as well for TKD?
Looking for pointers to close my guard in a little tighter while I'm fighting. For the most part I can defend against most punches and kicks but I am aware of one weak spot where they filter through some times. My style is Shotokan x Goju Ryu... In my own style I constantly see people, especially higher belts stand in a side on guard and it makes it extremely easy to sweep their leg during kicks so that their back ends up turned and also very easy to get a roundhouse kick in on it... I personally believe that hips square but having the ability to move 45 degrees off very quickly makes for better technique. One thing I'm not sure about with the way you're using open hands is how spaced apart your fingers are, what happens if someone decides to do a downward axe kick on top of those fingers? Likely to break fingers with enough force. It seems as though using an open hand would also give more coverage for defence. The closest thing we have to that in karate is knife hand block, Haito, shudo and kake uke which is a block, strike and neck or wrist grab all in one, but open hands always have fingers pushed tight together to avoid injury and maximise force.
Ha! Sorry I watched the video with the sound off and when I watched it again I realised you did mention the risk of breaking fingers... This is why you should watch with the sound on 🤣🤣
hi i love your videos am doing taekwondo as well do your sensi tell you that you got a tournament or how long will it take to go to a tournament from white belt or something or how long to get colour belt and what rank are you hopefully i become 1st dan
I always fight with my hands down, I'm just confortable in that way, I just cover the body and to the head I mostly use head movement, sometimes I use my hands but for taekwondo I feel like I don't need to rise my hands.
Interesting focus..Thanks Alex. in Tkd wtf, do you agree that we are good at flashy kicks and beside we almost never train punch, block, ground..that the limits because of sparring rules and habits. ITF tkd looks more efficient ?
Thank you so much for this video Alex!!!! My 7 yo daughter loves you!
Wish me luck for upcoming intramurals taekwondo 😇
