In all honesty I think no one should really have any bad comments towards his videos,OF Course each to their own, but, personally, I have found them to be very helpful and to be a veterinarian to take time to make videos like this I think is pretty cool of him.

I totally appreciate your advice! We just tried the de-scaling on our standard poodle (10 years old) with huge success! All of the tartar came off (big chunks) and we only used that little dental tool to scrape it off. We were super reluctant to put him under anesthesia for a dental cleaning, so we are extremely thankful for your video. Our dog held still and was a good sport the whole time!

@@VeterinarySecrets Hi...Thank you so much for the education....
I just have a quick question...
Are there scrapers sized especially for smaller dog's teeth or are they all basically the same?
Also.... Where can I get that antiseptic? Or will it be also effective if I use a silver spray?
I have sovereign silver.. would that okay to use?

I am so grateful for all your videos! I will definitely try the Monostat for my girl’s frito paws and her right ear. She has the prettiest white hair on her paws and it’s all discolored from licking due to the yeast infection. I have been using apple cider vinegar on her paws for months but the smell comes back and the discoloration has never gone away. My girl Bene’ has trouble every now and then with yeast in her right ear. Shes had medicine from her Veterenarian and it takes care of it but it might come back months later. I bought an ear rinse for dogs and it’s for fungus that I will use if needed. BUT I’m going to try the Monistat for both her ear and paws along with your concoction for her teeth and gums. Thank you so very much for taking your valuable time to make videos to help us dog parents at home. 🏆 ⭐️ ❤You’re the BEST! I will comment after several weeks to post our outcome..

I recently researched how to treat inflammation of gums for canines. Coconut oil, rubbed gently on gums 3 times a day. Well much to my suprise it only took one day, because I noticed a huge difference in the color and inflammation and her breath the very next day. Wow! Now I am using scaling tools and a polisher one tooth at a time. I also found that Manuka Honey has great bennifits for healty gums.
I want to thank you for your videos, I wouldn't know how to go about doing these procedures if you han't taken the time to show people.

Fascinated to hear of DIY dental cleaning vs choosing between (my current) impotent neglect in lieu of anesthesia/profit scam only avoided from hearing honest assessments of the practice in animal rescue circles.
Also, saw a comment on partial spay/vasectomy alternatives - it is the primary disturbing aspect of animal rescue/adoption with potential health fallout from anesthesia or kidney crystal victims. Please link if there is a video on this topic...may be another 'kept in the dark' pet topic.

My rescue who spent her entire first year in a crate in a rescue center did not want me to touch her mouth. I stared out using (Bright triple enzyme dog toothpaste) on my finger for many months to acclimate her to me being in her mouth. After 5-6 months of doing this, she now lets me use a gentle toothbrush on her teeth. This process along with chewing beef bones (she loved these) we have no teeth or gum issues at all. I am always into prevention whenever possible. I would also use CQ 10 if needed. Co Q 10 SAVED my gums!

Years ago I bought a pet scaling "kit". The main scaler looks more like a "hoe", which you gently put slightly above the gumline and "hook" onto the edge of the tartar and pull down, popping off the tartar. I find it works great on the dogs I've had, but cats are a bit more tricky! The kit also came with a hard plastic "bar" which rests between the teeth (on dogs, it's too big for cats) which keeps the mouth slightly open, making it a little easier to access those back teeth. I've never had to take a dog in for a dental, however, like I said, I find the cats harder to do and have had to do some dental work at the vet in the past. These days though, I can barely afford a plain vet visit, let alone any kind of treatment. 🙄

I don't trust the money makers to treat her better than laundry honestly.

It works! Thank you so much! Took about 15 minutes to do the one tooth because she squirms so much, but it popped right off like you said it would using a tool like you suggested. Amazing. Only going to do one a day until she get used to it, but it didn't hurt her. She doesn't like getting her nails clipped either. :)

What was the chlorihexidine stuff that you used? I have been looking and so far only found water additives or ones that don't say specifically for dogs.

I recently saw an adult dog without papers for an adoption fee of $1,800! Pet lovers need to pinch every penny today. Thank you for helping us. Vets can still make a living handling things we cannot do.

Louis looks like my dog, Hunter. Both Black Labs. I brush his teeth every day. I would brush twice, but once is pretty effective. Hunter is 16 now with great teeth that have absolutely zero gingivitis that so many dogs experience. He's had two pro cleanings before. He's also got a nice silver crown on the left canine tooth since he broke it when he was age 6 so, I found a dental vet to fix it. That was a root canal + crown. Scaling is easy if your dog is used to letting you brush teeth. Good way to avoid unnecessary anesthesia but, if the dog is not so cooperative, or the mouth is truly gunky, it's really necessary to get the pro cleaning done first then follow up with routine brushing + scaling if needed. If someone has a dog that is anesthesia sensitive, home cleaning is an option. It just takes time.

How do you know when you’re done scraping plaque or tartar from the tooth and not the enamel? My dog stays pretty calm and patient so I take my time to make sure I don’t scrape the enamel.
Also how often should I scale my dog’s teeth?
