Study Hinduism and you'll see just how similar it is to Norse and Greek mythology. Many of the concepts are almost identical. Take Cerberus, or Kerberos, from Greek mythology. There is a similar dog in old Sanskrit stories that guards the realm of the dead named Sharvara. Sharvara means 'spotted'. It is derived from the same root as Kerberos, which also means spotted. So they likely share the same origin as part of the original Indo-European pantheon. While Syria has historically been Semitic, there is no reason to think there was no influence between old Syrian mythology and Indo-European mythology.
