HL2 was originally a lot darker in setting and plot, Ravenholm is one of the only levels that carried across the early hl2 energy which is why it has a very different tone. Loads of leaked beta maps out there and you can see Ravenholm looks very close to final product from early on. The cursed zombie mining town... Worked out nicely imo :)
To be fair it is still pretty damn dark but yeah it is pretty interesting to see how the game creators moved between different ideas before settling on something. (Personally I like to think a good amount of the cut content does exist in the universe you just never see it because the world is so big or the combine never saw fit to utilize it)
I believe originally the game was set where everyone was wearing gas masks because the combine was literally harvesting the atmosphere with giant satellites, and had already drained the oceans of water. The remaining humans were either enslaved by mind control devices for basic manual labor, or rewarded with food and water for complying with more complex tasks. It was supposed to be very VERY dark and grim, basically the entire game was Ravenholm but I'm glad they changed the direction a little.
I actually think the final product is darker and more depressing. The only thing detracting from that is the weirdly light-hearted tone of Alyx, Eli, Barney, and Kleiner. The HL2 beta was definitely darker in terms of lighting, but it was more full of life with denser populations of people and activity all over the city. 58:06 funnily enough the idea for left 4 dead came from counter-strike. In the developer commentary for the first game it goes into how the idea came from playing against an entire team of counter-strike source bots armed with only knives. Early on the internal name for left 4 dead was even Terror-Strike!
@@npc_citizen9276 well Alyx was a prequel for the VR experience[which was hella amazing] and citadel has some potential but we won't know till it comes out, but damn we are excited as all hell to get citadel. The sad part is, we probably will never get a half-life 3 unless we decide to rename one of those two names or consider the two episodes we got as 3
@@sandysnake4606 Uh, big doubt on that one. The reason why HL3 never came out is because they struggled with crappy prototypes on an unfinished engine (Source 2). Source 2 has now matured, as evidence by HL Alyx's existence, and the Alyx team said they specifically want to see people's reaction and feedback to that post credits scene before making a new installment. Yes, new installment. I genuinely think we'll be playing as Gordon teaming up with Eli to get the G-Man. HL3 was a joke a decade ago, not anymore.
Ravenholm is such a different type of dark than the rest of the game, but the rest is still dark. Leaving Ravenholm and getting ambushed by the snipers is like waking up from a bad dream and realizing the dream was a better reality than your reality.
33:00 just wanted to say that Grigori was trying to separate the headcrabs from the hosts but they end up dying eachtime that's why you see them on the tables.
lol, I love how you "checked in" with the half fans. Then proceed to praise the game more and giggle like a child when you wield the saw blades. But in all seriousness, yes Ravenholm scared the shit out of me as a child. I remember the first time I played the game it took me multiple sessions to break through it, just because I had to step away and calm down.
Everyone keeps droning on about how scary and disturbing the level is (which it is), but no one ever talks about how fun this level is. Ehat about the fact that when you smack a zombie with a paint can they get paint on them? Or how it sounds like zombies are telling you to "yabba their icing"? This level may be terrifying and dreadful, but also pretty fun!
It essentially serves a a big toybox for the gravity gun which is great. The achievement of going through the entire level without firing a single bullet is a delight
Worst part about headcrabs.. It's not like the human is still there, it's that the human IS still there, no control, but feeling everything, every wound, every second of agony
1:13:04 This was originally supposed to be an alien flare gun which set enemies on fire, but I guess they decided that either wasn't useful or maybe not fun to fight against, so they changed it to an alien machine gun. You can still see that it was supposed to reload after a single shot by how the reload animation looks, with a single capsule being replaced despite it containing multiple shots.
are you sure about that? i'm pretty sure the ar2 was allways meant to be a machine gun, it's just that in the beta there was no flare gun model. in hl:alyx it still reloads one cell at a time
The AR-2 was used as a placeholder. The AR-2 has its origins as originally being the OICW, but they desided to go a bit more sifi and make the OSIPR, or AR-2. The flare gun you’re talking about was supposed to be a traditional orange flare pistol, break action, with one shot. It was cut with a lot of other weapons to make the game more tight and not over do it with weapons.
Man, every single sound the fast zombies make was so utterly terrifying to me when I played this game as a kid that even nowadays I still get chills every time I hear them
I love the first 5 minutes of complete shock and silence in Ravenholm from Mapo. Had similar reaction to it, and till this day, i still get shivers from hearing poison headcrabs and fast zombies, it is place of nightmares and was done better than a lot of horror games. Great video man.
I played this game when I was like 12 and I’ve been looking for a RUclipsr playing it that wasn’t just a walkthrough and had real reactions and this was very entertaining. He deserves more subscribers
God I'm in love with these playthroughs. I was sooooo excited for you to get to this point. Getting the Gravity Gun + going to Ravenholm are such distinct memorable gaming moments that have lived vividly in my mind until this day and your reaction to it all was perfect Oh and please play through both of the portal games! They are amazing
I was 16 when i played this masterpiece back in 2004 and the black headcrabs and those "carriers" were the scariest things ! Ravenholm is just a level on another level (haha) as is Half-Life ². Cant wait for your next episode. I do hope you might be willing to play Episode 1 and 2 after completing the Main Game. 👍
I went to sleep watching and listening to this series again from the first episode, then got woken up in the middle of the night by the screaming and cries of the Ravenholm zombies so I had to turn it off real quick... can't believe I even made it this far without waking up. 10/10 won't sleep in Ravenholm again
That was the best episode so far! Equal numbers of horror, creepiness & disturbing! Ravenholme could surpass alot of horror scenes/stories in any medium 😱! A truly horrifying yet interesting section. Loved how you were left speechless so many times 😂 can't wait to see what's next!
58:28 Even though Gordan doesn't appear in Left 4 Dead, We do technically have Father Grigori in the form of Bill in Left 4 Dead. This of course being that Grigori's voice actor is the same actor that does Bills voice too.
Been waiting for this part. One of my favorite levels ever. The atmosphere, paired with the fun and satisfaction of the gravity gun makes for a perfect combo.
I really like the way you play video games dude. You get so into them, you play intelligently, you explore fully, you generally just go fucking ham and enjoy each game to the fullest. Real pleasure watching you play HL2!
Huh, I'd never thought about it but yeah, Ravenholm does have some L4D vibes going on, it could very well be the inspiration or at least a nod, if l4d was already in development. Not just because of the zombies but the layout, mechanics, aesthetic and concepts are all so similar. Especially that "wait while the cart comes to you and hold against a horde of zombies".
I remember playing ravenholm level first time as a kid. Genuinely scarred me at that age. These guys were genius with this game. The setting and atmosphere is just so discomforting.
The expression on your face the first time you grabbed and threw something with the grav gun was quite a sight to see. You'd been having fun with throwing physics objects around already; now you get to see why Half-Life 2 is still hailed as one of the greatest games ever made. And then you entered Ravenholm and from the moment you first wielded a sawblade against the zombies you just went _silent_ for the next several minutes because you were so spellbound. Oh yeah. Half-Life 2 has that effect on people.
The game is wonderful. It always makes me excited and afraid at the same time. HL1 has been on our device since I was 9 years old, or maybe less, but now I discovered it, maybe after 10 years, 😂😂😂. Because I am now 19, I finished the first part. It was a wonderful experience, and now I am still playing this part in particular. This is a zombie city. I watch your videos when I don't find a solution or how to get out. The best thing is that you have translation for other languages. You are a good person. Keep it up... I think I took my time writing this long comment 😂😂😂💗
I love watching these. It's such an important game to video gaming history and it has been out for nearly 18 years that it's so unusual to see someone play it for the first time. It must have been a huge challenge to stay away from the massive amount of spoilers, lore and memes surrounding the game if you are even remotely interested in games. It's great to see him slowly realise just what a masterpiece this game is, what it means to the community, and just what people felt as we gradually realised that EP3/HL3 wasn't coming.
The different types of headcrab are most likely just different breeds/ species. It isn't explained in the game, but there are theories that the Combine genetically modified headcrabs so that they can't evolve, since the Gonomes could pose an actual threat to the combine, while the regular zombies are more easily regulated and controlled.
1:13:34 Another Easter egg missed. You can see what's behind that train ahead of you if you come closer to it. It's amazing how many secrets the Half-life series holds.
I believe the human part of headcrab zombies is still conscious. That's why they scream even when not being hurt (the human is in immense pain from the headcrab digging into their skull and all the other horrific things the headcrab does to their body. They're able to feel the pain, but they can't control their body (the headcrab takes control of their motion). Look up Half Life 2 headcrab zombie screams reversed.
You got it bang on but to add some extra juicy lore, Ravenholm was formerly a mining town that fell on hard times until presumably the mines were exhausted and people left, enough that when the Combine came to power, refugees from City 17 escaping the regime inhabited the desolate town and hid there but inevitably the Combine became suspicious and heavily shelled the town with headcrabs as a show of force.
Once you meet the poison head crabs...nothing will cause you anxiety quicker than hearing that little telltale squeak/bug sound later on in the game lol Those things are the worst.
Sweet game-play, Map! Love it and it brought back memories... So glad you are able to experience this extremely well-made shooter. It made a HUGE path for me with gaming and all RPG's. Enjoy!
The line from Alyx about Dr Mossman being jealous of Gordon’s role at Black Mesa isn’t just her being envious because she’s any scientist. Another line you could’ve gotten out of Eli in his lab mentions that Mossman came a hair’s length away from getting Gordon’s job at Black Mesa as Theoretical Physicist but Gordon had the better credentials and experience.
Valve are just unbeatable when it comes to presenting mechanics! The zombie chopped in half with the saw blade holding it up, followed by a room full of dead zombies all chopped in half, then you remember you have the Gravity Gun. God tier game design! Although it does pose the question: Eli is the only person (at least as far as I know) with a Gravity Gun, so how were the people of Ravenholm using the saw blades to kill all the zombies you see severed in two, if they didn’t have some means to launch them at the zombies? 🤔
I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally grenaded myself with the SMG because I am trained by other games to use the right mouse button for aiming. It has gotten to the point where I deliberately switch off of it so that doesn't happen. Your shock and awe at Ravenhome is beautiful to behold. It's such a dark part of the game. I noticed that you used the gravity gun less and less as the level progressed. That's a shame, because it's such a good weapon. There is even an achievement for going all the way through Ravenholm and the mines afterward without firing a shot. It's difficult but doable, requiring that you shepherd the all-powerful sawblades as much as possible. There's an exploit in that rooftop battle while Grigory is sending the cart over: just climb down. You can dodge the fast headcrab zombies much more easily that way and avoid having to shoot them. I also enjoy shooting them point blank while they're climbing the pipes. The weapon you just picked up is the Combine pulse rifle. It's powerful but has a limited ammo supply. The alt-fire... well, I figure you'll have used it by the time you could possibly read this comment, but it's well worth trying out.
You did ravenholm total justice Knowing how messed up the headcrab mutations and jow they work and how they become a bioweapon will add even more creepy aspect to the chapter Once a thriving town now a place of agony and suffering until they are put down This is why hl2 is the best fps ever
Ravenholm is the true horror of Half Life 2, and your reactions to it were great. When you asked if us Half Life fans were doing OK after all that, I just have one thing to say to that. I am doing just fine, for I am desensitized to it. I bring a Doom Slayer mentality to the way I deal with the hordes of zombies, I destroy them all, until it is done lol.
this game really teaches you the mechanics without tutorializing you with text pop ups, you're just there examining things and figuring things out yourselves
The Ravenholm level is among my favourite game segments anywhere, anytime, and I am pleased to see that the distrurbing atmosphere the developers created managed to silence even Motor Mouth Mapo for a little while. 😄
what i love about ravenholm is how quiet it is, everywhere else has noises going on in the background whether that be combine, people, machines something anything, but here, its silent and to borrow a probably edited quote from fawfuls minion, its like the apocalypse passed you by, its freaking creepy, other games with horror elements have jump scares and a bunch of noises and other creepy stuff which works, but ravenholm? in a world of noise this place is dead silent, and yet those same ones who should be dead aren't, their alive, and it adds to it all is the fact the sound isn't also dead yet, the only sounds though are the ravens, the mad father Gregori, and the howls of the zombies, and not to mention, its always night it would seem, like the sun itself fears this place and the moon doesn't even wanna touch it, this place is cursed, hell not even the combine dare step into it probably fearing what they made, and that's the horrifying parts, there's not many head crabs put into those pods, not enough to wipe out a town anyways, so that probably means a mother thing is somewhere in that damned town, the only course of action if mankind truly wins over the combine is to put it out of its misery, and there's the thing, this place feels almost alive to me but like its inhabitants it feels like it should be dead, not to mention something else worrying, there's not to many body's, i'm not saying that the town had a huge population no no no, but it should have had a decent amount but there's so few body's around, so little in a way, but what stopped it? did many escape or was there something worse in there to the point of the combine not even willing to enter it, this place should be burned to ash and dust and the ash and dust should be burned and the earth uprooted ten times over, but my final thoughts on it? there is a reason we don't go to ravenholm and all you need to understand it is the howls of the damned still echoing into the cold unforgiving eternal night so never go to ravenholm less you never wish to return again
Y'know I appreciate blind playthroughs like this cause it really reminds me just how fucking horrifying HL2 actually is lol I've played through Ravenholm so many times now that I forget "oh yeah, this thing is a skinless corpse running around with a headcrab"
whats mor f-ed up 1. dead burning body texture (is an actually burned body in real life) 2. zombie voices (reversing will reveal gut wrenching voicing of people pleading help from god)
Fun fact, when the poison headcrab dies and it laughs. It is because the person still under the headcrab finally is free form it's pain and laughs of happiness.
We all went through the "oh that's why we don't go to ravenholme" part. 😂 Bro went quiet just like one of us. Definitely one of the peak gaming chapters of all time

In the developer commentary for the first game it goes into how the idea came from playing against an entire team of counter-strike source bots armed with only knives. Early on the internal name for left 4 dead was even Terror-Strike!
no we're not okay... it's been 15 years and still no sequel
What about half life Alyx??? What about citadel??? Cmon valve is coming back.
@@npc_citizen9276 Spinoffs are not sequels.
@@krashdEpisodes continue from the original game, which is the definition of a sequel.
It's still scary after so many playthroughs. They really did a great job
Grigori is what you're going to look like in 20 years.
Hey Mapo, while you're editing there, try to listen to the zombies burning screams backwards... I hope you sleep well :)
better to take them out quickly and put them out of their misery
Ravenholm is such a different type of dark than the rest of the game, but the rest is still dark. Leaving Ravenholm and getting ambushed by the snipers is like waking up from a bad dream and realizing the dream was a better reality than your reality.
thats why i love the track Particle Ghost
Max Payne vibes
One of the best levels in FPS history.
Amen
Not really,but ok.
@@Emlek22334 it kinda is
@@Luka2000_ well its good but i wouldn't call it best
@@Emlek22334 what would you consider best, 2004 and before?
33:00 just wanted to say that Grigori was trying to separate the headcrabs from the hosts but they end up dying eachtime that's why you see them on the tables.
lol, I love how you "checked in" with the half fans.
Then proceed to praise the game more and giggle like a child when you wield the saw blades.
But in all seriousness, yes Ravenholm scared the shit out of me as a child. I remember the first time I played the game it took me multiple sessions to break through it, just because I had to step away and calm down.
55:04 courage the cowardly dog when faced with unimaginable horrors beyond your comprehension
I love how Father Grigori is playing the game :). Just compare faces i.e. at 57:11 - its uncanny.
The fact that you were speechless for a long, I think at Valve are proud of themselves, and it shows this game is still fantastic. 😎👌
Imagining Mapo reacting to spoilers and backseating comments:
"Loading screen silent stare of judgement".
You can still see that it was supposed to reload after a single shot by how the reload animation looks, with a single capsule being replaced despite it containing multiple shots.
are you sure about that? i'm pretty sure the ar2 was allways meant to be a machine gun, it's just that in the beta there was no flare gun model. in hl:alyx it still reloads one cell at a time
Pyro
The AR-2 was used as a placeholder. The AR-2 has its origins as originally being the OICW, but they desided to go a bit more sifi and make the OSIPR, or AR-2. The flare gun you’re talking about was supposed to be a traditional orange flare pistol, break action, with one shot. It was cut with a lot of other weapons to make the game more tight and not over do it with weapons.
the AR2s always been confusing to me tbh
"What's the deal with Ravenholm?"
Oh, I love that.
1:14:47 Half-life's soundtrack is amazing. This track is called Triage at Dawn. One of my favorites. CP Violation will boost anyone's energy.
Man, every single sound the fast zombies make was so utterly terrifying to me when I played this game as a kid that even nowadays I still get chills every time I hear them
They used the growling from angry squirriels, which for whatever reason actually scares the crap out of me...
"...i'm speechless" then inadvertently sets a zombie on fire in a cell.
this game, and the first one, are pinnacles of time.
I love the first 5 minutes of complete shock and silence in Ravenholm from Mapo. Had similar reaction to it, and till this day, i still get shivers from hearing poison headcrabs and fast zombies, it is place of nightmares and was done better than a lot of horror games. Great video man.
Yeah, those poison crabs sounds...
When you were amazed at killing that camera by throwing a brick at it by hand... I was so excited for this episode.
I just LOVE when you become totally mute at 14:21 and got the immersion instantly!
I played this game when I was like 12 and I’ve been looking for a RUclipsr playing it that wasn’t just a walkthrough and had real reactions and this was very entertaining. He deserves more subscribers
God I'm in love with these playthroughs. I was sooooo excited for you to get to this point. Getting the Gravity Gun + going to Ravenholm are such distinct memorable gaming moments that have lived vividly in my mind until this day and your reaction to it all was perfect
Oh and please play through both of the portal games!
The moment you realize you can launch the sawblades.. I will remember forever
58:28
Even though Gordan doesn't appear in Left 4 Dead, We do technically have Father Grigori in the form of Bill in Left 4 Dead.
"you play intelligently"
Are you on crack? It sometimes takes him 5 minutes to open an unlocked door.
Alnost 20 years later, and Ravenholm has certainly left its impression.
Yep like a damn headcrab as well
Huh, I'd never thought about it but yeah, Ravenholm does have some L4D vibes going on, it could very well be the inspiration or at least a nod, if l4d was already in development. Not just because of the zombies but the layout, mechanics, aesthetic and concepts are all so similar. Especially that "wait while the cart comes to you and hold against a horde of zombies".
28:40 "That wasn't supposed to explode in my face."
I'm pretty sure it was, because those barrels are somewhat notorious for getting people killed.
I remember playing ravenholm level first time as a kid. Genuinely scarred me at that age. These guys were genius with this game. The setting and atmosphere is just so discomforting.
Oh what's that? The world's so immersive you have trouble remembering we're here? I can't wait for your playthrough of Half Life Alyx.
Great episode! I remember playing this level off a demo disc that came with an Xbox magazine. I was hooked, and knew that I HAD TO get the full game.
Those 4 mins of siilence tho! and the bit in the mine where you fell in the water, very cinematic! 😂
Incredible! Your immersion and attention to the enviroments is really contagious.
Happy you're enjoying the game !
1:13:34 Another Easter egg missed. You can see what's behind that train ahead of you if you come closer to it.
It's amazing how many secrets the Half-life series holds.
What is it?
watching through the series for the first time. that rattlesnake sound the poisonous headcrabs make will always trigger my fight-or-flight response.
The moment after surviving the assault when Triage at Dawn starts playing is my absolute favourite
I love how a game from 2004 is still able to stun new players with it's visual presentation and environment.
You being blown away by the saw blades made my day hahaha
glad to see you 'enjoyed' Ravenholm as much as I did when I first played it!
Once you meet the poison head crabs...nothing will cause you anxiety quicker than hearing that little telltale squeak/bug sound later on in the game lol Those things are the worst.
Heck, even hearing the gravity gun's open sound makes me think there are poison headcrabs. They caused me emotional trauma
Fuck the poison headcrabs I had nightmares in my sleep first time I encountered the runners man 😂
I almost hit F6 when I saw 'We don't go to Ravenholm' appear on the screen.
Oh man, I envy you!
Loving this. Sometimes, even now, my wife and I will be driving in an old town and say, "we don't go to Ravenholm..." 😮
Although it does pose the question:
Eli is the only person (at least as far as I know) with a Gravity Gun, so how were the people of Ravenholm using the saw blades to kill all the zombies you see severed in two, if they didn’t have some means to launch them at the zombies?
Your reactions to the gravity gun AND dog were everything I could have hoped for lol
You did ravenholm total justice
Knowing how messed up the headcrab mutations and jow they work and how they become a bioweapon will add even more creepy aspect to the chapter
Once a thriving town now a place of agony and suffering until they are put down
This is why hl2 is the best fps ever
You're quickly becoming my favorite let's player. And yah this is the episode us HL2 players were really looking forward to. Lol.
That moment when you felt relieved when you've finish Ravenholm mission and get out of there and seeing the sun
I’ve been enjoying watching you get intrigued by everything that’s happening in the game. I’m looking forward to more episodes. Cheers!
Yeah just imagine ravenholm back in 2004 when the graphics were sick for the time...
This whole LP I’ve been like “just wait till he gets the Gravity Gun” and this ep did not disappoint.
Welcome to the introduction to the most fun weapon ever created for a game :)
The Ravenholm level is among my favourite game segments anywhere, anytime, and I am pleased to see that the distrurbing atmosphere the developers created managed to silence even Motor Mouth Mapo for a little while. 😄
The gravity gun: mmm soup :)
It's insane that this is a 20 year old game. Definitely one of the greatest.
Everyone says ‘why’ we don’t go to Ravenholm and never ‘how’s’ ravenholm
what i love about ravenholm is how quiet it is, everywhere else has noises going on in the background whether that be combine, people, machines something anything, but here, its silent and to borrow a probably edited quote from fawfuls minion, its like the apocalypse passed you by, its freaking creepy, other games with horror elements have jump scares and a bunch of noises and other creepy stuff which works, but ravenholm? in a world of noise this place is dead silent, and yet those same ones who should be dead aren't, their alive, and it adds to it all is the fact the sound isn't also dead yet, the only sounds though are the ravens, the mad father Gregori, and the howls of the zombies, and not to mention, its always night it would seem, like the sun itself fears this place and the moon doesn't even wanna touch it, this place is cursed, hell not even the combine dare step into it probably fearing what they made, and that's the horrifying parts, there's not many head crabs put into those pods, not enough to wipe out a town anyways, so that probably means a mother thing is somewhere in that damned town, the only course of action if mankind truly wins over the combine is to put it out of its misery, and there's the thing, this place feels almost alive to me but like its inhabitants it feels like it should be dead, not to mention something else worrying, there's not to many body's, i'm not saying that the town had a huge population no no no, but it should have had a decent amount but there's so few body's around, so little in a way, but what stopped it? did many escape or was there something worse in there to the point of the combine not even willing to enter it, this place should be burned to ash and dust and the ash and dust should be burned and the earth uprooted ten times over, but my final thoughts on it? there is a reason we don't go to ravenholm and all you need to understand it is the howls of the damned still echoing into the cold unforgiving eternal night so never go to ravenholm less you never wish to return again
41:30 - Definitely was traumatic, It scared me shitless as a kid.
This playthrough is making me nostalgic. Good times playing this game as a kid...
Y'know I appreciate blind playthroughs like this cause it really reminds me just how fucking horrifying HL2 actually is lol
I've played through Ravenholm so many times now that I forget "oh yeah, this thing is a skinless corpse running around with a headcrab"
Ravenholm is one of the coolest areas I have experienced in any game. So creepy.
whats mor f-ed up
1. dead burning body texture (is an actually burned body in real life)
2. zombie voices (reversing will reveal gut wrenching voicing of people pleading help from god)
Fun fact, when the poison headcrab dies and it laughs. It is because the person still under the headcrab finally is free form it's pain and laughs of happiness.
We all went through the "oh that's why we don't go to ravenholme" part. 😂 Bro went quiet just like one of us. Definitely one of the peak gaming chapters of all time
Speaking of Left 4 Dead characters, Father Grigori is voice acting by the late Jim French who also voiced Bill the Veteran.
Your face when you entered Ravenholm was priceless xD I think everyone who enters it has the same face, I know I did! And then as you began exploring it, seeing the blades machines and all zombies 😂😂 you went silent for like 5 minutes XD And to answer your question: I've played this game when I was 11 xD now I'm 22 and I'm OKAY, funny that this game is like a stress reliever compared to shitty reality that's currently happening heh
Is it just me or did anyone else find 12:50 incredibly funny 😂
