Someone in HR at my office must be a big fan of yours as well! I've been googling everything on my work computer like you said and now they wanna have a meeting! I'm guessing it's to talk about what future builds you'll get to do in the DLC!
Giants flame, take thee! doing damage comparable to your fully upgraded weapon with high scaling in your best stat, while having near minimum stats for casting and a bad seal for casting it just proves how ok it is. I think spells are in a good place in ER, not too strong unless you specialize hard, fun to throw around because they're flashy, and gives you options outside normal weapon ranges.
@isaachepworth7860 It's not just a pve game, though. Aside from that... carry a magic weapon? Call of Duty levels don't give you infinite ammo for story mode, they also give you a knife.
@@2CubicIt can be turned off for PVP, but it's mainly a PVE game, and making mages carry a weapon doesn't actually fix the problem of non-regenerating mana.
Hey you mentioned in an earlier video that you don’t read the comments but I have a very rare affliction to night terrors, which as an adult really sucks, and your videos have become a huge comfort to me
Read this one, sleep tight, I will fight your demons for you. kidding, but I have sleep paralysis, it can be so brutal when you know you need sleep, but you wake up TERRIFIED to fall back asleep. Glad I can help!
Messmer the impaler is... um... in the dlc? Thats all we really know for sure... he'll probably make the swag jump to safety first try he jumps a shit ton in that trailer so it should work out.
Tulok: doesn't like when someone's spells deal good damage. Also Tulok: has bias against almost all spells and incantations, and doesn't like having to build around them. Fr tho, love the video
Also, maybe if he put more points into arcane while using the seal that scales with arcane, his spells would've done more damage. I love the videos, and I genuinely agree with weapons generally being better than spells, but it's a little disingenuous to call them bad when you only have 30 points in the scaling stat.
I agree the playstyle with spells is in general very very glass cannon and very buff heavy. His playstyle is just tankier one with like 50-60 Vig, and like 40 points in scaling stats. That is just a weapon playstyle. His problems with spells just kind of stem from his playstyle which just meshes well with melee playstyles.
Usually, when I build for a magic stat. I still use 60 vigor. 37 Mind. A bit of stamina. And finally, the stat for attacking. But then again, I tend to end runs at level 175.... Usually, 175 gives me enough room to add all the stats I want. But yeah.... I'll admit. Spells ARE mostly meh. But, he doesn't give them a fair shake. Maybe the Great Spear should have been set to Occult? And then pump everything into Arcane? He spells would have hit decently hard then I think.
I mean y'all are basically complaining that Tulok thinks spells aren't as good as weapons while also directly stating that spells need 30-40 more points worth of investment to be viable. I also think it's completely valid that he doesn't find the playstyle of spells fun and so doesn't want to do them. The best way to play spellcaster is to get a tanky spirit summon and then not engage with the game, so yknow.
my personal theory comes from his name: "messmer" the impaler, messmer is an old german word for "knife maker" i personally think that after some argument or fight of some sort, messmer created a blade capable of hurting a god, and impaled the greater will, leading to the giant gash we see on its stomach. this would be what got him banished to the shadow realm, and what got snakes their reputation for being traitorous
Huh, a blasphemous knife capable of threatening the golden order. Sounds like the fingerslayer blade to me. Also, I could be wrong, but doesn't Nokron share a connection with the Numen? With the Land of Shadows being described as where Marika took her first step, Messmer forging the fingerslayer blade would make a ton of sense.
I googled it and couldn’t find the connection between „Messmer“ and „knife maker“ other than DLC theories… That’s not saying that it can’t be true but the only old meaning I could find was „Kirchendiener“ or „Servant of the church“.
The neat thing about spells is that, generally, they don't ask you to get really close to your enemies. I will readily admit that very few are worthwhile as a primary damage source. However, plenty are good to great in the "it's kind of hard to get close to the boss right now" role. And another neat thing about spells, the ones that tend to be best in the supplementary damage role are generally the mid range beginner and intermediate spells rather than any of the big flashy ones that spell enjoyers like to rave about. Glintstone Pebble and to a lesser extent Magic Glintblade are unironically some of the best spells for this roll since they don't really ask much from you other than having a bit of mind, and plenty of great weapons already ask for a bit of INT or FAI.
Honestly, I agree with you when it comes to dragon spells with mainly Rotten Breath being an exception (though you should definitely try Dragonmaw; it does very high physical damage and actually decent (45) stance damage). Anyway, this was a fun run. Glad you at least got to see the power of Burn, O Flame! against Malenia even if it was on NG+, without the Fire Scorpion Charm and without the Giant's Seal or the Incantation boosting talisman(s).
Dragon Communion spells are amazing but they do basically require you have a distraction with you. Rot Breath and Greyoll's Roar indeed are pretty good setup for a lot of bosses but, yeah, you stack the debuffs and then start bonking them on the head
I think outside of any other discussions about spell viability, one of the most simple explanations for why they’re good is that they’re pretty much the most damage you can do with ranged attacks outside of a very specific set of Ashes of War Like yeah Siluria’s Woe does insane damage but what if you wanted to run Ordovis’ Greatsword and needed a ranged option? Giantsflame, Take Thee babey! If you have the stats to at the very least take a single ranged incantation or sorcery in addition to a pure melee setup, you’ll be golden!
Unlike something like Zelda or Skyrim ranged options are almost universally utility imo. It's so rare in souls that magic or bow only is as viable as it is in Elden Ring. Elden Ring is decent though with Comet Azur or other nuke builds using the Physick. Those are inconvient in the Souls games unless you're doing an optimized RTSR setup or stacking a ton of buffs. You basically always need a Melee weapon anyway.
@@secretlyaslug2325 Spell only was viable in DS2 because you didn't have an FP bar. You could buy 3 casts of dark orb and have 60-80 casts of it (depending on your attunement which also raises your casting speed) and as much healing as melee builds. Plus there you had herbs to replenish your spells if needed. And your fully upgraded staff could actually bonk pretty good as well to finish off enemies instead of using another cast of dark orb. Having a dark infused melee weapon was of course a good choice (bandit axe, any rapier or hammer) but you could beat the game with only spells pretty easy (unless you used lightning, it was nerfed too much and was much harder than other 3 types). That's why imo DS2 has the best magic system still, a bit better than ER. In DS1 spells were ok, but not as viable imo. And using only spells in DS3 was rough times.
I don't even think it's that insane. The woman in the painting has the same type of hood as Fia. Messmer being conceived through a new life from death is basically exactly what Fia does with her mending rune. Even Miquella undoing Marika's mistake and linking the Haligtree to the Shadow Lands to give the people there respite fits with his character. I'm just glad to finally find a youtuber who thinks Miquella is a good person
With one of my chars, I also use a lot of bloodflame weapon in guardian swordspear, merely for the drip, to match the other arcane red-flame weapons she uses as well (from Eleonora Poleblade to Moghwyn Spear), and it's worth it just because of that.
Awesome run. I did a Kain Highwind cosplay run with the same weapon and ash of war (ended up in Maleketh's armor, for the dark colors and beak). Super fun run in itself
I make the grafted scion jump off the cliff to its death every time, turns out if you hang out at the top of the ladder for a few seconds he teleports back up there with you and then jumps to his death immediately. Kinda useless but very fun
Idk why I’m fixating on the spells thing but I guess I’ll comment on it since I have yet to do so. Others have probably said this but as far as I can tell spells aren’t really meant to replace weapons, they just give you more combat options than you would have without them. Long range spells like frenzied burst and Loretta’s great bow can delete enemies from a distance, aoe spells help with groups of enemies, medium range projectiles like night comet and ancient death rancor can be used to punish attacks where you can’t be close to the enemy. You can also use spells for status or to deal a type of damage that your weapon doesn’t have. So like, when I say that spells are good I don’t mean that they’re better at killing things than weapons are in every situation, I mean that being able to cast spells is pretty much always better than not being able to if you have the levels for it.
I fully agree with this, I always feel the lack of variety and utility whenever I do a build that doesn't have spells. Maybe I'm just a spells apologist, but I think they are best used in their niche situations as part of a more holistic build. Hammers for nails, screwdrivers for screws, y'know?
@@baileyp_ Ye to some extent ashes of war can supplant the need for spells, like for example blasphemous blade and sword of night and flame have strong AOEs and bolt of gransax has a long range projectile. But then you either have to pick between the two or have them soft swapped which raises your equip load. Not to mention if you have the stats to use most of those weapons (bolt of gransax being a notable exception) you can probably cast spells anyway. Idk I feel like it's mostly a flexibility kind of thing. Spells do also have some decent nuke options but in fairness usually at high levels the strongest ashes of war will out dps sorceries, tho sometimes with tradeoffs. Fully buffed darkmoon greatsword projectiles will hit harder than night comet for example but some enemies are hard to hit with them cuz they dodge too much.
Don’t know if you’ve done this already, I had a look and couldn’t find it. Would love to see a Carian Knight build. The sword has a unique moveset, the armour, shield and sword all look awesome, the ash of war hits like a small truck, and you can get the weapons before any boss, so it could be a secret starting class.
relatively new here, but love the channel think I've managed to watch every Elden Ring video you have so far! The quality is brilliant, the jokes on point and content is great. Love every vid. An idea that I would find very useful would be a quick run through some of your set up routes, i.e pickle farms, grave and ghost glovewart routes, somber routes, smithing routes, things like that. I love using all part of the game (spirit ashes) and most guides just show end game when all the bell bearings are available.
I just did a full playthrough with the Bloodhound's Fang and all the faith weapon buffs and bloodflame blade absolutely KILLS on that thing. bleed proc in two hits on basic enemies. I might do that with the Vulgar Militia saw as well now cuz that buildup would be insane.
i don't think i've come across a youtuber/streamer that appeals to all my pop (and other) culture enjoyment with their references and tastes since i first started watching northernlion. huge fan.
Lore theory time: TP = Toilet Paper What is toilet paper used for? Shit! Teleports are shit! (Love the Lothric fight so they really just are when the boss teleports away)
If I remember right from my playthrough with the Guardian Swordspear (which isn't great memory; it was one of my early playthroughs 18 months ago), it has deceptively low Poise damage for some reason. In my opinion, that is why you weren't getting the stance breaks you expected. Great weapon, but weird in several ways, and I think it takes longer to get used to than other weapons.
Instead of looking up Elemer and Messmer, I'm watching this on my work computer. Not sure how many builds you're working on, but maybe a Tulok's Favorites Build? Like it uses the Blasphemous Blade with Night Comet just in case, have Tiche as your Spirit Ash and...not sure for armor. Maybe make it a NG+ run to cut out farming too? It'll likely just be a Blasphemous Blade NG+ run, but nothing wrong with a simple and clean run.
22:20 Huh, I could have sworn I got through the fog gate without him at least once. But maybe I'm just confused, probably because of all this lit gas in my room, hard to think straight
I've actually recently completed a run where using Bloodflame Blade was the primary driver and I 100% agree with the assessment of it. My weapon of choice for this run was a Cross Naginata. I started on Blood Tax but that didn't work at all. Sword Dance saved the entire run, pretty much. I was aware of the faith-only scaling bug for weapon buffs (and heals) so the seal of choice was Godslayer. Levelling up two common weapons was not fun, tho BfB REALLY is only worth it if you already have a bleeding weapon and the timing grace so that you can back off when needed is the real advantage. A bit unfortunate that it pays for this with lesser damage values compared to Lighting and Holy buffs. It also ends up being unfortunate that Occult scaling locks you out of buffing. That IS understandable, but it would open some nice possibilities. You get SOME easier bleeding and a bit of extra fire damage but... I dunno if there are many weapons BETTER than the Cross Naginata for this, maybe the Scavenger's Sword? If fire and bleed is what you're looking for, Mohgwyn's Spear and Eleonora's Poleblade just kind of dominate that entire space. From different angles too so you have options even Did end up having some nice surprises, tho: Played a bit with this game's Avelyn and using THAT and the BFB for bleeding was fun. Also just picked up the Moon Crossbow and it was more handy to have than I initially expected? That is a solid ranged option, turns out While having a Keen weapon and BfB'ing it will just kinda never be as good as just making it a flame art weapon instead (something that I think speaks a lot to how underwhelming the weapon buff spells are in this game) having the flexibility of always carrying the three buffs was SUPER fun. Farum Azula, in particular, saw a lot of switching back and forth depending on the specific section I wish Bloodflame Claw was good. I tried but it just can't I find it a bit wild that they never patched the scaling for weapon buffs. With how flexible the ash of war and whetblade system is in Elden Ring, having their scaling broken just ultimately makes them a poor option kind of always? Even with that flexibility angle, if you want that, it's easy enough to grab and equip a Golden Epitaph for those situations. They have their fun but you know you're always handicapping yourself by counting on them
vykes war spear is probably the better choice for a great spear in a messmer build tbh since it’s got- -jump attack -isn’t golden -flame aoe perfection!
I know PvP isn't for you, but Burn O Flame is really fricking deadly in PvP! Eespecially if you do it in a tight corridor, where there isn't enough space for the pillars to spread out, so they just clump together and fill the whole corridor! :D Also, I've said it before, but those are some very nice RUclips stats. 44% subscribed is way more than most RUclipsrs have!
Time to impale all the lands between! and it make sense to start on a NG+ run, the man is basically a boss equal to all the (currently very ded) demigods
regarding the radahn kill requirement - i assume it’s for lore reasons since radahn’s death was rumored to be a pretty important pillar for miquella’s plan. can’t wait to get to june to find out tho!!
Video aside, I'm super excited to get his spear and armor in the DLC. I hope the AOW on his spear is the ground stab into the fire spears coming out of the ground!
Weapons are absurdly OP when you don't invest in them. That's the point being made. The comparison isn't use spell vs do nothing at all, it's use spell vs do something else.
I like Giantsflame Take Thee cuz its a big fireball that does overkill damage, especially with the right seal. It's just super funny to oneshot people with a miniature nuclear bomb
As a spell lover. You are right. Spell caster only builds are more viable than any previous game excluding bloodborne, but yeah, weapons are just better. I do like to see what I can force to work, though, and that's about the only reason I like spells.
The Burn o Flameee line got me 😂. Also, yeah spells in FromSoft games are kinda weird. For general use, the best spells are almost always the cheapest ones that you usually get at the start of the game like Glintstone pebble and catch flame. The bigger more expensive spells only show their full power when under the effect of all the buffs in the game or against specific enemy types. I love spells, but Strength builds are definitely the power house in most of the FromSoft games.
Just saying this here so i can say i called it if it does turn out to be true but i have a feeling that messmers mother he speaks of in the trailer is St. Trina
You're incorrect about Bloodflame. It stacks, it does not refresh. If you'd used something like Spinning Weapon, you'd stack like 300 bleed buildup every cast. If you did that with a base bleed weapon with bloodflame applied, it's more like 450 or so (for some reason spinning weapon hits apply lower bleed value but not bloodflame blade bleed bleed)
I have a feeling that Messmer is Merikas first born, hidden from history after she used him to come to God hood in the Shadow Lands (similar to Hella in MCU)
I think the build would’ve worked better with vikes war spear. It’s… A spear Flame damage Red & orange Jumping ash of war Dex & faith scaling for incants

I heard that Burn, O Flame against Malenia can really... Messm-her up. At least you found some use for spells/incantations on this run.
Okay but why was he right about Messmers Phase two
I can’t wait for the dlc runs.
You were right about the finger spells but the one you saw was rot!
Edit: and you called the wicker boss being weak to fire…this guy is Nostradamus.
Lore theory time: TP = Toilet Paper What is toilet paper used for? Shit! Teleports are shit! (Love the Lothric fight so they really just are when the boss teleports away)
Liked for the Yaakov Smirnoff reference.
„We have messmer at home”
Messmer at home:
28:35 gotta love build bleed-up
If I remember right from my playthrough with the Guardian Swordspear (which isn't great memory; it was one of my early playthroughs 18 months ago), it has deceptively low Poise damage for some reason. In my opinion, that is why you weren't getting the stance breaks you expected.
Great weapon, but weird in several ways, and I think it takes longer to get used to than other weapons.
26:15 best comparison of all time
It seems the lands between are about to be, messmerized
I'm definitely gonna come back in June to see how accurate this build was to mesmer
You could’ve used vykes war spear because the aow is a jumping attack that leaves fire on the ground
22:20
Huh, I could have sworn I got through the fog gate without him at least once. But maybe I'm just confused, probably because of all this lit gas in my room, hard to think straight
Champions headpiece. Guardians gauntlets. Rotten duelist leggings, Drake chest piece.
5:18, and that's where I lost it. That's the joke that kills me. My sense of humor is silly
Levelling up two common weapons was not fun, tho
BfB REALLY is only worth it if you already have a bleeding weapon and the timing grace so that you can back off when needed is the real advantage. From different angles too so you have options even
Did end up having some nice surprises, tho:
Played a bit with this game's Avelyn and using THAT and the BFB for bleeding was fun. Also just picked up the Moon Crossbow and it was more handy to have than I initially expected? That is a solid ranged option, turns out
While having a Keen weapon and BfB'ing it will just kinda never be as good as just making it a flame art weapon instead (something that I think speaks a lot to how underwhelming the weapon buff spells are in this game) having the flexibility of always carrying the three buffs was SUPER fun. Farum Azula, in particular, saw a lot of switching back and forth depending on the specific section
I wish Bloodflame Claw was good. I tried but it just can't
I find it a bit wild that they never patched the scaling for weapon buffs. With how flexible the ash of war and whetblade system is in Elden Ring, having their scaling broken just ultimately makes them a poor option kind of always? Even with that flexibility angle, if you want that, it's easy enough to grab and equip a Golden Epitaph for those situations. They have their fun but you know you're always handicapping yourself by counting on them
i think vykes war speak matches perfectly for messmers spear even the ash of war is a jump of flames
vykes war spear is probably the better choice for a great spear in a messmer build tbh since it’s got-
-jump attack
-isn’t golden
-flame aoe
perfection!
I beat the DLC and can finally watch this, noice.
I know PvP isn't for you, but Burn O Flame is really fricking deadly in PvP! Eespecially if you do it in a tight corridor, where there isn't enough space for the pillars to spread out, so they just clump together and fill the whole corridor! :D
Also, I've said it before, but those are some very nice RUclips stats. 44% subscribed is way more than most RUclipsrs have!
I'm so hyped for the dlc, but I have to do like 13 more runs to prep. Great video as usual (I might steal the build, sorry)
Truly a Messmerizing video
I agree with the sick guy the sword of st Trina joke was hilarious
Time to impale all the lands between! and it make sense to start on a NG+ run, the man is basically a boss equal to all the (currently very ded) demigods
The appeal behind spells is that they make the screen go funny colours ❤
regarding the radahn kill requirement - i assume it’s for lore reasons since radahn’s death was rumored to be a pretty important pillar for miquella’s plan. can’t wait to get to june to find out tho!!
Video aside, I'm super excited to get his spear and armor in the DLC. I hope the AOW on his spear is the ground stab into the fire spears coming out of the ground!
Dude I just love this channel
Talking Heads needle drop! And my favorite Talking Heads!
I can confirm that Bloodflame rips on the Vulgar Malitia saw. And the Cross-Naginata
Spells are often quite good if you actually invest in them 😭 you had early game investment stats in NG+, of course it was shit.
Weapons are absurdly OP when you don't invest in them. That's the point being made. The comparison isn't use spell vs do nothing at all, it's use spell vs do something else.
Please make one of these three: Green Goblin, Mr. Negative, Venom/Carnage. Would be a really cool build if you could pull it off
For the perfect drip you should have put on the rotten Gladiator greaves
20:29 you look good asf in a flannel
I like Giantsflame Take Thee cuz its a big fireball that does overkill damage, especially with the right seal. It's just super funny to oneshot people with a miniature nuclear bomb
@9:00 On the other hand, the Dragon Cum Seal has much better scaling than the giant's seal, so you're probably not losing too much.
I'm so happy it's not another reaction video! This is fun.
Call Phil a hypnotist cause this is Messmerizing
If you didn't know, JRR Martin took a lot of inspiration from Celtic mythology to Elden Ring's lore.
As a spell lover. You are right. Spell caster only builds are more viable than any previous game excluding bloodborne, but yeah, weapons are just better. I do like to see what I can force to work, though, and that's about the only reason I like spells.
You really should play Dark Souls 1.
i’ve been doing a playthrough without spirit or npc summons, was all fun and games until i got to the godskin duo. i did beat them tho.
This is the most jank-detective shit ever, and I love it. Thanks for all the great videos, Phil! Algorithm!
Trina
Love your vids super excited for the dlc!
Damn that ODB reference was fire 🔥
You're incorrect about Bloodflame. It stacks, it does not refresh. If you'd used something like Spinning Weapon, you'd stack like 300 bleed buildup every cast. If you did that with a base bleed weapon with bloodflame applied, it's more like 450 or so (for some reason spinning weapon hits apply lower bleed value but not bloodflame blade bleed bleed)
If the knockoff is this good, I can't wait for you to fight the real thing.
I’m curious what Gideon will give us for finding miquilla, he gave us spells for all the other unfound Demi gods
"I'll get the next one" was so funny
The purple butterfly spell is a St Trina's spell bc it makes enemy sleep
I have a feeling that Messmer is Merikas first born, hidden from history after she used him to come to God hood in the Shadow Lands (similar to Hella in MCU)
The new raya lucarian guy isnt a royal, its the guy in the inverted statue
16:30 well, you were wrong XD
21:23 huh, you got that right..
I subscribed for the great content.. I stayed for the “look it up on your work computer” 😅
I think vyke's great spear wouldve been better since it has fire damage and a jumping skill. great vid tho
I think the build would’ve worked better with vikes war spear. It’s…
A spear
Flame damage
Red & orange
Jumping ash of war
Dex & faith scaling for incants
Finally my favorite weapon gets its own video :3
Okay first he calls us getting a young radahn fight, then he calls mesmers ash of war and THEN HE CALLS THE SECOND PHASE???
Mesmer the (hardly know her) impailer (hardly know her).
I like incantations just for the buffs bestial constitution is the best spell in the game hands down change my mind.
As for why Bloodflame Blade seems to struggle getting bleed procs: It's meant to be put on weapons that have innate bleed to begin with.
Love it! Great idea and build
