MTU: Maximum Transmission Unit. This value dictates how much of data(MAX) can be sent in a single Ethernet Frame. Usually the default MTU value is set to 1500 bytes, and can be configured to use Jumbo Frame 9000(MTU). If the source and destination host vMotion VMkernel interface(VMkx) value is not identical then you will observe Network issues such as packet drops, in this case vMotion process not being started or failing. It’s always recommended to use same MTU value across the data path which includes Network devices such as Switch and Routers between source and destination. MTU value of 1500 is a safe option if you’re not sure about the MTU values set on the devices across the data path.
