- The Intimidator takes the provisional pole as the third car on the track during qualifying for the 2001 Daytona 500. Earnhardt's lap of 180.694 mph was 27th-fastest on the day, placing him 14th on the grid for the 1st Gatorade Twin 125 the following Thursday.

It's surreal we got to see Dale Sr race during the Fox era. The new graphics package and camera angles it's cool to see his car during this time. Like a glimpse into the future we didn't get to see.
To bad it wasn't the NBC era. The best years in Nascar ever was Nascar on NBC from 2001-2006
NASCAR’s peak lasted for 499 miles
that feeling you get seeing that black 3 running again......
Sergio Romero rip Dale Earnhardt :(
Anyone else notice how the engines sounded back then..? Much different than today's cars. They really sounded good!
That is because how the carborator has changed, plus the engines are different as well from back then
It's cause they switched the pipes from the driver side too the other side of the cars since drivers where complaining about their seats getting hot from them
TheDieHardWWEAddict it also was do to the carburetor changing too.
jkrish 48 Yes
tAmEz ZoDiAc Yes it does. Drivers were in fact voicing it too NASCAR
So I use to go to every race. Here’s a little inside knowledge dale told me and the group of people . “I like to qualify between 10-15th because if you sit on the pole. You’ve just highlighted your self as a cheater and nascar will look your car over again, sometimes tear it apart. They won’t ever look over the guy that’s 10th - 15th. Never attract attention to your car” dale was the best at sand bagging he knew how to play the game and get away with stuff. And it’s makes a lot of sense. Anybody that’s on the pole you know they have cheated some how. So why attract that kind of attention.
How does this not have any likes? I’ll be the first
That explains why he only had 22 career poles!!
Talk about a big brain move
Man NASCAR has never been the same!!!
It never will be without Dale.
Knowing what we know now and how Dale Jr. has stepped up and inserted himself into a role in NASCAR elite voices he and Sr. Could have been a dynasty. An absolute dynasty in racing and behind the scenes in NASCAR.
The 2001 500 was amazing up until the Last Lap
Who would have thought 8 days later. We would lose Dale. 😭
feel same way, thak u Austin for giving us something to smile bout this year.
reelkena
Nascar safety standards killed him.
You’re saying Sterling killed Dale? I’ve already had this discussion with someone else, Dale came down blocking for his teammates and wrecked himself. NASCAR’s safety is what killed him, both drivers were driving as they would be on the last lap of the DAYTONA 500 and no one would lift on the last lap. We saw that this year in the 500.
Exactly it's the last lap of the Daytona 500, no one is going to play nice especially if a win is on the line.
Sad AF
I MISS HIM EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i miss dale
Notice the sign from 2000. how many drivers did we loose in 2000? Kenny erwin, tonny roper, and Adam Petty. 3. Dale Sr drove the number 3, Nascar ignored the safty after those 3 deaths, and only after the death of the 3. did they do anything about it. what im saying is Dales death could have been prevented, but they did nothing and as a result, all we have left of the great Dale Earnhardt Sr, is the memories. R.I.P Intimidater
Never thought that Dale Earnhardt's last race would be on 2/18/2001.
My eyes pretty much instantly watered up as I saw his qualifying run. :(
if he had only made it though that turn one more time, he'd still be here. :(
I can't believe I was there that day.
Glory Days of NASCAR.
1:37 the sound of the car is amazing
2:10, to see that black #3 powering thru the turn. Miss it!
Sure do miss him....... NASCAR hasn't been the same.
man, I miss seeing that car on out on the track.
Everything about Dale Earnhardt in 2001 never feels real to me. I wasn't even born yet, but hearing that same NASCAR on FOX music I've heard all my life with the black #3 turning laps at Daytona, just messes with my mind. Watching him less than 200 hours away from losing his life. Chatting like normal. Eerie
Earnhardt was just too cool!! Man l really miss the good old days!! I would take off from work to watch qualifying at Daytona and Talladega!!
Qualifying... You went out, ran your lap, fastest guy gets the pole. Simple! Makes sense
Now we got this "Knock Out" Qualifying for 2022 🤔
Earnhardt used such a different line than a normal Restrictor plate Q run...he ran low in the turns on this first lap and basically matched the line on his 2nd lap.
8 days before he died☹
Man that black Monte Carlo looks hot
this was so eerie to watch. thnx 4 the upload brock.
This is a great prequel to 500 Days.
The day before my birthday. God I miss Earnhardt.
its hard to see that black 3 with a fox sports symbol...thanks for rare footage
“Aero package” so that wasn’t some new buzzword used In 2019
I miss dale so much.. He was my hero.
1:42 8 days later, on this very turn.. he would lose control and succumb to the concrete walls of turn 4
Thanks for posting. =)
little did we know what wasgoing to happen a week later
1:19 amazing
The very first NASCAR on FOX broadcast.
It is amazing to look at how modern the graphics were for then, and how primitive they are now by standards. Pretty appropriate that the "FOX SPORTS" graphic at the top right evolved into "NASCAR on FOX" and is now back to just being "FOX SPORTS"
one thing I noticed was the lack of the Sonic logo on the rear decklids, did Earnhardt get the deal with Sonic the week of the 500?
Sonic was put on the car on the morning
of the race
That was the best looking car.NASCAR has changed so much.and mostly not for the better.only better thing is safety.the racing pretty much sucks now
R.i.p. Dale Sr 🙏 we will always miss you 😭😭😭😭 you are my friends favorite Nascar driver 😭😞😔😖😢
Ty Justine I miss him 😢
@@michaeljenkins746 u r welcome 💜 I'm here for you 🙏 you're my best friend 🤗❤️
First race weekend I was alive for and the last for dale.
If the first comment is pole, then the 43rd comment must be...
Row 22!
lovely!
notice that there is no Sonic logo at the back end of his car.
The sponsorship was announced on the 16th.
Sonic sponsorship was signed two days before the 500.
did anyone else feel sad when he passed turn four? thumbs up if you did :(
His last qualifying run
WHERE did u get this man
i know this might be mean but i really wish he didnt qualify for this race or even if he did engine failure during the race wish he didnt start that last lap RIP Dale give em hell at that racetrack in the sky
even if he wouldnt of died on this track he prob would of on another one it was his time is all
@@donlee20066 nah man, he walks out on every single crash he succumbed to.. for example, the Talladega flip, his car was shambles but still walked out and put a huge thumbs up
M1co29 yeah but he was like weakend glass by this point, crash after crash takes a toll, that was just the straw that broke him
RIP Dale Earnhardt Sr
I wonder if FOX knew that a decade later, they would have the FOX Sports ID on the screen...
wow!
This cool but nostalgic.
@Lottech96 -- Honestly, they look a lot like the '90s Monte Carlos.
I kno dude i feel the same way.:(
All that had to happen was dale missing the turn 😢😢😢 😭😭😭😭
8 days until in the final lap 49 year old Dale Earnhardt Sr lost his life and Dead due to Basilar skull fracture and suffered fatal injuries sustained in a crash accident and involved with ken Schrader in turn 4
1:35 listen to that engine!
Ryan Wile OH
0:13 DID THEY FR USE THE JGR FONT
Probably thought Theresa would sue if they used the DEI 8 🤭
hard to watch. I use to have the whole race on dvd. It got ruined cause it was a RW DVD.
cool!:D
@Tryphon34 yeah, its losing water from the radiator, Steve Park had the same problem in the duels, Jeff Gordon won in Darlington in 2008 with the problem, its mainly the radiator.
D.W. said "limp".....lol
Did he qualify in the same car he used for the race?
that's how qualifying works you qualify with the car your going to use during the race
what is that flat peace of metal standing up in the air on his roof
Jeff Rogers to slow the car down and for aerodynamics
Jeff Rogers that was the areo package back then at plate tracks. Punched a big hole in the air and created the best place racing ever which allowed a lot of passing.
james david manning it’s called a wicker bill
It was weird he's stopped sponsoring Burger King.
Interesting, isn't it? Apparently they parted ways before the 2000 awards ceremony. Sonic didn't come on as a replacement until later that SpeedWeeks.
DW said he car doesn't look all that good, geez would have won the 500 that year if he really wanted to but he was trying to let jr and dw's brother have there chance
"Quite honestly, Dale's car does';t look all that good."
What the hell are you talking about, Darrell?
CBright7831 Listen to what he was saying and then you will know....
I never noticed how wide and long the cars were in 2001 (yes that is sarcasm). No reason to post this in 16:9 with crap video quality.
DW....I had something on him
Kenseth had a cool car
@Lottech96
agrred the impalas look sharp
I've honestly hated the way cars have sounded at restrictor plate track after 94. I hate the restrictor plates regardless. There was nothing better than to hear the cars screaming by unrestricted before bobby Allison's crash at dega in 87. but from 1988 when they started using them to about 1994 is when they sounded good. They changed the exhaust after that and maybe the engines or carburetor. They sounded like shit going around daytona and talladega after that. Just watch the last few laps of the 93 diehard 500 when CBS had a in car camera in earnhardts Lumina before he won the race. Sounded way better.
Steven Bragg they where way louder here and sounded so much better. They should horrible now.
DEATHtona 500
was this supposed to be worth watching ???
