  • Doing an unboxing of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet 3rd Generation, with a few first impressions.
    UPDATE: Lenovo's sending me a new one, as the flaky keyboard connection is not a known, normal issue.

    Can you check the screen for PWM dimming? If you lower the brightness to its lowest setting (before blackness), and view the screen through a cell phone or ipod camera, you'll see flickering or bands scrolling across.

    Big thank you for this review. Iam thinking between this one and [not yet released] Acer Switch7 Black Edition.
    1. What is the cooling system? Regular fan or passive liquid cooling system?
    2. Are you happy with the screen resolution? Everything too tiny?
    3. Can you upgrade SSD and RAM by yourself or all soldered and glued?
    Thank you.

      Hi! The cooling system is a regular fan, no liquid cooling. It does get warm, but it also isn't going to fail so spectacularly. Screen resolution is dang near perfect. I run it at 200% in Windows 10, and it looks and performs fantastic. It's a great resolution. The SSD (and wifi card) is upgradable, but the RAM is soldered on. The rear of the unit separates with screws and a plastic wedge -- no glue. Lenovo publishes a Hardware Maintenance Manual in their support section.

    Could you quickly check at the back or under the hinge if there are screw openings? I am curious if the X1 Tablet Gen 3 is user serviceable like the Gen 2. I am debating between a Yoga gen 3 or this...

    How did you find the keyboard sturdy built and resistant to bind? On picture it is not enough thick to burden typing pressure

    • @breakallthethings
      @breakallthethings  6 лет назад +1

      The keyboard is sturdy, but best when you lay it flat, rather than angled/sloped using the magnet. When up at an angle, there's some bounce as expected with a keyboard so thin. It's definitely the shallowest ThinkPad keyboard I've used. Coming from something in the fuller size range (T4x0, X2x0), one would find it less comfortable and potentially annoying. Comparing it to the MacBook or Dell XPS 13/15, it's more comfortable with a better response.

    Is it better or worser than the iPad 6th gen? (I am talking about performance, not price. I like this tab)

    • @breakallthethings
      @breakallthethings  5 лет назад

      I would say that the performance is really good on the X1 tablet compared to the iPad, but using it "as a tablet" is still cornered pretty well by iOS.

    Omg I really want to buy it but it's so damn expensive, and Lenovo's website is horrible.

      It is, but they had a huge sale a couple of weeks back. Hopefully, they will again soon. :)

    Too large bezels, perhaps next time...
    Better battery life, fanless would be great, too.

    How long does the tablet take to charge?

    • @breakallthethings
      @breakallthethings  6 лет назад

      Completely unscientific test (screen off and on, mostly unused during the time), from ~5%, where Windows automatically slept the machine, to ~100%, was 2 hours and 8 minutes. It took about an hour and ten minutes to get to 80%, and then an additional 58 minutes to get from 80% to 100%. This falls in line with Lenovo's previous "Rapid Charge" system. This is with the stock Lenovo 65W USB-C charger.

    I had to send mine back because of pen parallax, wanted to use it for art.

      Purnendu Karmakar I have the surface pro and it’s great. I also have the new Samsung notebook 9 pen and the pen on that one is even better then the surface.

    • @mashley444

      Purnendu Karmakar no parallax and the jidder is much improved, if you’re taking notes you shouldn’t notice it at all.

      The surface pro is better then the Lenovo tablet. For art I love the Samsung notebook 9 pen.

    Does the tablet get hot after some computing intensive work?

    • @breakallthethings
      @breakallthethings  6 лет назад +1

      You know, the first day I had it, it really did. It's been pretty okay over the last few days. Definitely not something that would be comfortable laying flat for a long period of time, but not obscene.

    How's the battery life on a single charge?

    • @breakallthethings
      @breakallthethings  6 лет назад

      So far, kind of garbage. Getting 3-4 hours while doing Scala development work at ~80% brightness, but I have not yet tried doing any optimization or undervolting. I've found that Lenovo tweaks the firmware for the first few months, so that may improve.

      Thanks for the reply. I am torn between this and the new x1 yoga.
