I bought one of these when the Gen 3 first launched. Got a fully specced out model, $2000 after a $500 off sale. It's great and with an eGPU I can game on it, too.
@@LaptopRetrospective I use the discontinued Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock that has a GTX 1050 4GB GPU. It plays Elite Dangerous reasonably well, runs the Yakuza games great, Metal Gear Solid V, GTA 5
I commented originally on the Yoga Gen1 video, but this video pretty much cemented my decision to also get a X1 Tablet, 3rd Gen again. In the US, it's amazing how much tech refurbishers are selling these for, and they are in amazingly good condition as well. I lucked out getting a fully specced out version. Can't go wrong with the i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD variant. It even had the elusive LTE module. Funny enough, 2 years ago, I owned one of these but without the LTE module. I ended up wanting WWAN so bad, I ended up getting the EM7455 module and the antennas on ebay and retrofitting it myself. So it was a nice change of pace this time around that I found one with it builtin from the factory.
I just ordered this by accident because I thought I was getting the X1 Fold gen 1. What an embarrassing oversight...but that being said, is this worth it in September of 2022 for $950 USD? - i7 8650u - 8gb ram - 256GB SSD
That CPU will likely outperform what's in the Gen 1 Fold. The form factor is different of course and it will depend what you use it for and how you use it. The Fold Gen 2 I have to admit has caught my interest.
Thanks for sharing this crisp review .. I am getting a good deal for a refurbished one in ebay ... just wondering if it would be strong enough to use in 2022 for regular working purpose (light to medium level coding and note taking) and survive for a 1.5 year ? or should I try something else ?
Hey ! Great review and video. I am going to buy this as a secondary since I have a desktop. Do you think I can do some light-mid coding? I will get this for college. Thanks in advance
Glad you enjoyed the review. I hear lots of people listen to reviews and podcasts at higher speeds. I never want to speak too quickly so people have the option. It's much harder to slow down a recording.
I have x230, considering modding it to something like x330. As someone unbiased new vs old, are the newer ultraportables really comparable? Hate the loss of cpu horsepower… but newer intel integrated graphics especially are big improvements
I love my X220 but I also love my X1 Nano. CPUs are harder to measure apples to apples because how the architecture changes and advances along with how we use our computers. Raw horsepower used to be more important I think than it is today.
I've had one of these since around launch, how's the Windows 11 upgrade doing on it? I've been holding off as I can't upgrade my Threadripper Workstation and not sure I want that many mixed OSes floating in the house =/
Windows 11 worked fine. Compatibility wise 10 and 11 under the hood get along fine. The UI is the biggest change but I've had minimal issues switching back and forth.
Hey! Merry Xmas and great to see another Lenovo on the channel. Please don’t get rid of the classic Laptop Retrospective intro :) Have a nice hollidays and greetings from Spain !!!
@@LaptopRetrospective Oh yes, my bad. I’m also familiar with the Project X intro, though I posted before reaching it, sorry. It would be great to see your take on such devices as the Lenovo Flex 14 and some of the Yoga 2 in 1 models, if you’ve got the opportunity, of course. Your reviews are always helpful and this X1 seems like a serious contender to the Surface line. Great video as always
@@LaptopRetrospective As of today, the X1 Tablet is for 710$ on the Lenovo website and the X12 base spec is 850$. I am tempted but wanted to know your opinion?
The X12 is the latest and greatest. I haven't had any time with it personally. It will depend on specs, cost and warranty for me which is better for your budget. When you go thin, a warranty is nice because when/if things fail they get expensive.
I got one of those 2 years ago. Still using and loving it. BUT... This machine has a bad TDP throttling. It is factory locked on 15W, and goes really slow cpu speeds (0.8 - 0.95 hrz) for no good reason, as temps still in a very good range. This can solved by using specific software... But not recommended to average users
Yeah I think they favoured that to ensure steady and stable versus pushing it to it's limits. I anticipate they thought that not many enthusiasts would want this kind of device but it's good to have options.
I bought this tablet with ram 8gb i5 version, unfortunately not well enough for multitasking. I just open ms word, outlook, ms teams, browser chrome for WhatsApp, it gets sometimes lag, high cpu, ram above 95%
There is an i7 model on clearance at Lenovo for $799 USD. I am really tempted to get it as I am a student whose use is pretty much growing the web, typing in Word, and streaming music. My original Surface Laptop is over 4 years old now and is pretty slow. It has a 7th gen i5 without support (or at least without more work than I would care to do) for Windows 11. I cannot use it unplugged presumably because of a loose connection as it turns off when I type hard or move it. And since it is the first gen, it is glued without an easy way to get in. I like the idea of this tablet for use when reading documents and taking notes on them. I love my 3:2 aspect ratio. I'm borrowing a family member's Yoga 730 I hate the keyboard and the 16:9 screen that is lower quality than my Surface Laptop. This is easily $300-400 less than the current models I would buy instead.
@@LaptopRetrospective I ended up going with a refurb X1 Nano for $856 + taxes from the Lenovo Outlet. Seems like a good deal to me. Thank you for all the videos on that machine! I did not want to risk the screen coating wear issues I have seen online with the X1 Tablet.
For someone who is going to buy this laptop. I bought this Laptop in 2020. Faced several issues with this laptop. # After every 6 months the keypad of the laptop stops working. # The screen of the laptop is very sensitive to scratches. Although I appreciate the fact that it is strong. # This laptop has severe heating issues which led to my screen getting damaged in 2 years. Although the Lenovo service replaced the keypad and screen yet they cant give back the time I wasted in contacting and explaining them my issues. Also this is not the problem with my piece only as I and my cousin both bought it together and faced the same issues. Someone can buy this if they have to use it for only 3 years. But if you want to use it like the OGs TOSHIBA or DELL which last for 10-12 years. THIS WONT.

can you use the keyboard using bluetooth connection? i.e. not connecting the keyboard to the pogo pin
Pretty sure there is no battery inside the keyboard and no Bluetooth.
@@LaptopRetrospective thanks for the info LR. Too bad, the later yoga/ideapad duet keyboard has battery and can be used with BT connection.
@lacsarlacsar3566 Yes, BT seems to be the way they went overall moving forward. Less parts and easier to manufacture and design too I'd imagine.

Would you recommend getting 8gb or 16gb version for core i7? Getting a 16gb i7 for 450usd. Would you consider it a good deal? Does windows ui lag?
I'd be tempted to get the 16GB if it meets your needs and budget rather than wish you had it later.
