I'm a little confused as to why everyone in that IT story was confused. It's simple, OP gave the security system a pop quiz and the security system hadn't been paying attention in class so the district got schooled.
Yeah. Using his intellect, he may have found the flaws in the system, but the unwise thing he did was telling the district that he had... That part could have seemed like a good idea to him, but since he was still a teen back then, the gesture just backfired since adults don't usually take teens seriously and want to put unnecessary blame on them which was proven here... I feel sorry for teens who have to go through those false accusation periods of their lives. Especially if they're only trying to help.
Yeah you have to be some amount of stupid to be this tech smart but to then skip every single rule your breaking which is proven by the logic of “I can’t just bring this stuff to school, but their can’t be a reason or penalty for that”
@@Sakiko23 I don’t it’s that in this situation. They legitimately saw him as a possible threat of having their schools sacked, rigged for a terror attack, or altering any information etc etc. He is smart, but having done out of boredom and not having anyone from a higher knowledge of the security to see the it was easily hackable with the right tools. I don’t understand IT, but hearing this I’m surprised they have the lady as head IT for how easy this task is done.
I agree with everything but the "that they'd understand". I'm cynical enough to fully expect that their first priorities after being proven incompetent (with tens of thousands of $ being wasted as a result) are deflection and finding a scapegoat. Add to that the lack of technical understading most of the administration have, and, in their minds, that tech-savvy teenager is transformed into an evil mastermind. Fortunately, the judge was wise enough to see through this nonsense and issued a mild ruling.
The guy that hacked the Pentagon back in the 90s was the same, a young person who got curious about I T vulnerabilities and found out there's all kinds of open doors.
@@droidmaker7932 I believe he got some serious jail time but I also believe he was hired by the government LOL not really sure which is the the real story

The IT story shows how evil some schools are. No matter what happen, trying to destroy a kid like that should result in instant perma jail for all those assholes.
So basically the school was delivered a perfect list of all their security flaws. And their response to this was to try to sue the guy who gave them the list so they could afford the upgrade. What a bunch of bullshit.
What he did was reckless and certainly illegal, if anyone had done that with malicious intent, they could have really wreaked havoc on the whole system. But damn if he didn't embarrass the shit out of the IT lady that a 17 yr old could hack her security network with such ease.
That's what happened to a good friend of me. He demonstrated the principal multiple times how bad the IT at our school was by doing some "hacking" like guessing the admin password (it was "localroot" lol), finding a text file with all students and staff passwords on a not password protected server or bypassing the printer payment software by just going to the print settings and selecting the printer directly instead of the printserver. He was in the principals office every few weeks to tell him about a new flaw. After he graduated they immediately hired him. They needed him to transition to an actually competent IT company as he probably knew the systems better than anyone from the old company.
17yo OP: To protect this school from villainy, I must think like a villain so that we may better improve our security. Sucks he went through so much, but that was actually a sweet idea.
Hahahahah yeah It’s such a minute part of the story that when they bring it back up it’s like “really? You’re charging them with possession of marijuana in the same trial as all this other cyber crime?”
The girlfriend in that first story is a keeper. Not just because she cleaned up his mess and made him coffee and, as far as we know, she didn’t make him feel crappy about it, but also because she’s super patient with his divorce. It’s not easy dating someone in the middle of a very long and messy divorce!
I once had a buddy who thought it would funny to wake up his girl friend by farting in her face, alas he passed more then gas this buddy was single the very same day.
I don't think the outcome would have been much different if it was just a fart. Who would want to live with someone who wakes you up by farting in your face? The only excuse for that is beeing five years old or drunk as fuck. And again, who wants to live with someone like that.
The first one is kinda wholesome.. That girlfriend sounds like such an amazing, sweet, and caring person. Despite the experience OP had I'm glad he found such a good partner
That IT story sounds like some shit I would pull. I'm honestly surprised this kid was able to take out the entire security system. They should've probably been grateful he showed them the weaknesses before something serious actually happened.
The main fuck up that the IT op had done was having some weed on him. Really bothers me with stories like this as after exposing major security risks in their systems, throughout the district at that, and they chose to save themselves the embarrassment by throwing op under the bus. Good that op had sorted their life out, but it could of gone the other way of them not trusting authority and learnt from that experience that being upfront about things won't get you anywhere.
I think one of the worst parts was them trying to charge OP for the money for a new system OP didn’t break the system, just exposed the flaws in it That’s not how restitution works. That’s like someone walking into your house because you don’t have locks on the doors, and then you sue them for the cost of a lock
I would argue that going through with this trial was more embarrassing for the school than if they just updated the security system and maybe punished OP (for trespassing maybe? Idk, just something to let him know that he shouldn’t have been messing around with the system). Could’ve saved themselves some money in attorney’s fees as well
Ah, second story is what every white hat hacker gets when caught before showing the findings; ass holes who didn't do their work try to make them the bad guys.
@Charles De Wit while I agree, a white hat hacker almost always works FOR the company that ordered the pen test, with full knowledge beforehand of at least one person in the company (CIO or similar). OP was a textbook grey hat hacker: only good intentions with no actual damage done or data stolen, but unbeknownst to anyone actually in charge of IT security within the company. That said, I applaud the judge for not throwing a tantrum and seeing this case for what it actually was. Not too many judges would be so clear-headed imho. Also, love the fact that this kid's IT teacher was simultaneously disappointed and SUPER proud :-D
@@MacSvensson The intention was never to do damage, just showing the (many) weaknesses in the system. And like you said; MOST. So in my book he's still a white hat hacker. Like the guy who hacked DIMfPOTUS' twitter TWICE by just guessing his password.

not even that! they tried to destroy the life of a child because that child showed everyone how bad their security systems were. they SHOULDVE been happy that its only a child and not a malicious third party who exposed that. they shouldve given him an award of some kind and made sure that it security would be taken more seriously. idiots!

Man, that iT story needs to be in the news. He was GIVEN access to all these systems he wasn't supposed ever have access to. He tried to show flaws in the system without any malicious intent (as the evidence shows), and this was all just a show so that the district wouldn't have responsibility for all of the flaws in their own system. I'd say the only thing that is ambiguous is that he was caught before he could make is findings public, but still, the evidence shows that he didn't do anything outside of the tests of the flaws. This was a white cap hack, through and through...
Shout out to that district that had such shitty security that a 17 year old in an IT class figured out all the flaws with it and the district didnt know how to handle the fact that they were the ones who fucked up. OP really shouldn't have been fucking around with that stuff but it's not their fault that it was so easy to do.

keep in mind this was 10 hours of sleep over a period of a whole week, thats barely over an hour a day if they actually slept every night. I have a feeling there were at least a few completely sleepless nights as well as multiple power naps, so his sleep schedule was completely wrecked
He could at least have said to the school: “With the amount of access you have given me,I am going to find out if there are any flaws in the security of everything, then report back if I find some horrible things.”
Imagine if OP was like 12 or something? That would be more hilarious if someone pointed out that Prepubescent kid could do a better job the the District IT lady.
I don’t know... even with the “court document” attachment, that IT story doesn’t ring true. While very intelligent teenagers exist and it’s possible OP was trusted with certain things- I was trusted with access to things most students wouldn’t be granted, and I was definitely above average intelligence as a teen- the way everything played out was very fantastical, especially the trial and long term outcome. No, I don’t believe it’s a true story.

They just forgot that people are dumb and sometimes use the wrong keycard...
@@gonun69 Oh boy, I hope you're not responsible for any kind of security if you think so. Those cards allow the owner to disable the alarm system, not just parking. The only reason the "wrong" card was extra helpful was that it gave system-wide access to ALL the locations, not just local access. And if you GENUINELY don't see how big of a security flaw it is having one single key (or keycard) that can open every single door and turn off the alarms in fifteen locations, then I really don't know what to say...
Alternate title. 17 year old proves he's better at IT work than the IT director lady.
Which... isn't really that unusual to be honest XD my dad owned a computer repair company, which included upgrades, cleaning, advice on programs to use for various situations, virus removal, resetups, rig assembly.etc
By the age of 14 I was better at it than any of his employees, simply because I had way too much time on my hand (undiagnosed autism prevented me from associating homework with... well... home. It was a school thing so I finished it at school and had nothing to do at home) and just practiced all the stuff they did on computers out of sheer boredom.
TL;DR: Bored teens brought up around computers often get better than overconfident/lazy adults.

Praising a criminal, i see.
@@arthurramirez5665 Being a criminal is merely a definition. Break the rules => criminal. For example if it was a crime to drink water this would by definition make a lot of people criminals. It doesn't automatically mean you're a bad person. The 17 year old didn't have bad intentions, quite the opposite. He wanted to point out the vulnerabilities in the security system to improve on it. He was just too naive to think having good intentions doesn't define him as a criminal. He had a lot of power and didn't use it to his advantage, so I'd praise him as well any day. Doesn't mean it was a good idea of him to commit crimes in the first place.
In the IT story imagine if op was a school sh$oter, he would have access to the entire school system scary stuff.
Yeah, and that's why the school was out of line IMO. OP exposed a HUGE weakness that could have hurt students if it were in the wrong hands. A District Grand Master key and a District Key Card that gave someone access to the security of every school in a district is not necessary and made it way too easy to disarm a school. @@thewriteinpresident you good?
I'm a little confused as to why everyone in that IT story was confused. It's simple, OP gave the security system a pop quiz and the security system hadn't been paying attention in class so the district got schooled.
The IT op is the perfect case of someone who is intelligent but not wise.
You'd think that they'd understand that OP was doing them a favour by revealing security issues
Imagine a high school kid telling your bosses how bad you are at your job..... yeah “understanding” isn’t the first thing I would be either
And imagine being so smart and so stupid at the same time “it’s not breaking and entering, it’s unknown security tests”
The first story's ending just made me smile so hard-

Indeed. You'd think that schools would care about nurturing these natural talents but it couldn't be further from the truth.
IT Lady was so upset by her shoddy work being exposed she tried to ruin a 17 year olds life.
So basically the school was delivered a perfect list of all their security flaws. And their response to this was to try to sue the guy who gave them the list so they could afford the upgrade. What a bunch of bullshit.
in the IT story, the school shouldn't have pressed charges, they should have HIRED OP!! LOL
I too have an issue with accidently committing nine felonies and seven misdemeanors! Happens all the time!
IT story lesson: never outsmart someone you don't outrank.

That last one seems like someone the FBI would scout out and hire after hearing this.
I think one of the worst parts was them trying to charge OP for the money for a new system
OP didn’t break the system, just exposed the flaws in it
That’s not how restitution works.
