@@zcu8404 A lot actually! 1. The repetitive rhythmic motifs in the left hand accompaniment is a common theme in an extensive amount of Debussy's pieces. Examples are Claire de Lune, The Snow is Dancing, and Passepied, just to name a few. 2. Additionally, arpeggios/broken chords used in this piece are prominent in a lot of Debussy's earlier Romantic works like his Arabesques. 3. Debussy also pioneered early Jazz harmony through his use of chord extensions and modes, the first of which is used a lot in this video. 4. And finally, the melody at 0:30 is using the C Maj/A Min Pentatonic Scale, which was popularized by Debussy after he fell in love with Asian art. Anyways, sorry for the long aah essay.
the only thing I can agree with you here is the use of the pentatonic scale, but nothing else here speaks “debussy” to me. I struggle to find the resemblance between the motifs here and in the examples you provided, and arpeggios are not unique to Debussy. He loved to use half-disminished chords, upper chord extensions etc. in his pieces sure, and the composer does the same here but not for the same purpose (e.g in Reflets dans l’eau, arpeggios could represent the shimmering water, but here is merely used to add intensity or provide a rhythmic drive). The third point is unrelated to this piece, as again he wasn’t the only composer doing such things; Scriabin, Gershwin, Ravel, in fact Sibelius used a similar chord progression (2-5-1) in his piece ‘le sapin’… Also the chord progression here is not debussy at all imo, this doesn’t scream impressionism (I know Debussy hated being called that but he was an impressionist hahaha). Obviously this piece is not bad, in fact a very pleasant one, but with, perhaps, more japanese influences (anime opening? based on the account’s other posts) And of course nothing personal to you, this doesn’t come from a place of malice! Have a nice day
@@zcu8404 You have some really fair points in your reply, especially that this piece probably had inspiration from other sources, and I agree that some similar techniques used by both composers differ in context. It is also true that the 2-5-1 progressions is a product of western harmony and not common in Impressionism, although Debussy's earlier works (before he derived into modal music) still contained a lot of "traditional" harmony. Take Clair de Lune for example, which has a TON of perfect authentic cadences, a few of which are 2-5-1. Aside from the prevalent iv chord, it is a very Romantic-style piece. This also brings me to a point I forgot to mention, which is that both composers often have non chord tones on strong beats such as 1 and 3 of 4/4. And yes, a lot of other composers in the period did that too, but I just thought it was an interesting correlation. Regardless, I see your argument here and a lot of your points are IMO great!
