Hey guys! I understand your frustration on this subject. Blackcurrants are 'stooled' which means new shoots arising from underground. Gooseberry is grown on a ' leg' as branches growing near the soil will tend to root into it if left unattended, also the fruit on a big crop will pull low branches down onto the soil and so risk damaging the fruit. Great Video. Do you know if it is possible to take some cuttings during the winter to propagate indoors in a grow tent? Would this harm or be bad for the main plant at all? Thanks.
@@X-Ray_Planet_Earth Hi there It won't hurt the plant to take a few cuttings during winter, wether they'd succeed indoors I could not say ( I've never tried it or have a grow tent. Nothing to lose by having a go 😀🤞 Thanks for watching 🙏👍
Hi Bob They've been grown for a long time here in the UK but not as popular these days. Lol 🤣 PPE is very necessary working with gooseberries (those thorns are vicious!) Always a pleasure to hear from you my friend 👍🍻

would love to see a comparison between an unpruned bush and a pruned one at the time they produce fruit... does it increase production a lot as there's a heck of a lot of growth removed?
With this variety "Invicta" it is extremely vigorous and sometimes I will prune out growth to get better access to the fruit, then prune again in late autumn. Thanks for your comment and watching 👍👍👍
I'm going to try to grow some gooseberries next year in Arkansas. I don't think anyone grows them here and it's a shame. In fact, they were banned across the US for a while.

I don't really understand. You cut off the long branches, but that's where the fruit comes from, right? On These branches are only 1 year old and on these 1 year old branches comes the best fruit, right?
Hello Gooseberries fruit on 2-3 year old wood not one year old. The long growths are 1year old wood, by cutting them back short you leave a few buds on that will turn into fruiting spurs the next season. Gradually there will be extension growth of the older wood that carry many fruiting spurs. I hope that helps Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏🙏👍

@@jds4935 Yes, prune the new growths back to about two inches from the main stem. If you want to try growing "cordon" gooseberries this method will work very well. I have video on how to form cordon gooseberries in my playlist. Best wishes 👍

That's a great question - I've not yet tried a hinnomaki as only planted one a couple of months ago. Invicta is reliable, disease resistant and heavy cropping so a lot going for it - it sweetens the longer you leave it on the bush, but it is a culinary variety at the end of the day. It's just ordinary hormone rooting powder you buy from garden centre or DIY store ( I think the brand is Doff).
