Perfection. What music + lyrics, what a calling out of parents who visit their bigotry on their otherwise open-minded children. An apt song for our times.
I first heard this song in late 80s when my sister's came back from a semester of college upstate NY, lol. I think it's safe to say they had a good time.
I always thought it's about someone wanting to escape from her narrow-minded racist and prejudiced parents and neighborhood. "There but for the Grace of God go I"
Jack Egan I agree, but again I think it's broader than that. Don't get me wrong, her parents are prejudiced, but not JUST racist (no blacks, no jews, no gays AND no rock music). My point was that her parents thought that if they isolated her from all of these negative influences (a "quiet" place overseas) she would turn out perfect. Not true. The positive power of diversity! Interestingly, the part "gaining weight and losing sleep" was originally written as "popping pills and smoking weed" (changed as it was too controversial for it's time). ALso, the definition of "there but for the grace of God" is to thank the Lord that one is not as bad off as someone else who had a misfortune (again, more than just a race thing).
Carlo and Carmen Vidal just had a child A lovely girl with a crooked smile Now they gotta split 'cause the Bronx ain't fit For a kid to grow up in Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away With no blacks, no Jews and no gays There but for the grace of God go I Papi and the family left the dirty streets To find a quiet place overseas And year after year the kid has to hear The do's, the don'ts and the dears And when she's ten years old she digs that Rock 'n' Roll But Papi bans it from the home There but for the grace of God go I Baby, she turns out to be a natural freak Gaining weight and losing sleep And when she's sweet sixteen, she packs her things and leaves With a man she met on the street Carmen starts to bawl, bangs her head to the wall Too much love is worse than none at all There but for the grace of God go I

The remix is even better than the original, heavier bass!
one of my favorite songs i had the disco 12 inch.I'm black its not racist its about a racist couple. every body lighten up.
K. W. Kind of, it's more about the downside of over protecting a child - too much love is worse than none at all
Louis Brown. Some one replyed that it was a racist song thats why i said what i did.
I figured as much. I was replying to your comment that it's about a racist couple, which only explains part of it. :)
