@@msmltvcktl It is from 1987. Also, the character of the artist is definitely portrayed as wacky and "out there".... Did George Baker play Tiberius?!? I'm amazed. I've seen the ruins of his palace on Capri and heard all the stories about him from my friends in Campania. I just can't square George Baker as the genial and human Inspector Wexford with the idea of George Baker as the sadistic Tiberius. I suppose he didn't speak with a Wiltshire accent in that role ...
This is such a fun episode! The artist is a parody of me, my art, introversion and confused housekeeping. Then there're the retro customs, the banter ("You ought to leave your lungs to science"), and Russell Hunter's preciously clever sparring exchange during the interview, even chiding the detective... Russell Hunter, King of the Oppressed Character. All had me laughing out loud and understanding other people's view of artists. So convincing, so natural. What a hoot. Thanks, Paul
Most artists are slightly eccentric (and delightfully so). Also they can be very vague. Rupert is no exception. But if this description also applies to you, please don't worry or be offended. Artists live on a different plane to other mortals. I for one wouldn't change that state of affairs for the world. Artists are unique and must be cherished, while their work delights the eye of the beholder.
If you're old enough to have had a VCR, I bet at the end, you were praying hard too - "Please don't break! Please don't break! I promise from now on, I'll be kind & rewind."
This is a great episode, and I remember watching it when it came out in 1987. Raymond Francis (Chief Superintendent Lockhart), Russell Hunter (Lonely from Callan), and Kim Thomson with that beautiful hair: this is a real treat!
Raymond Francis isn’t in this. Are you confusing him with Donald Hewlett (was an English actor, born in Northenden, Manchester, Lancashire, and best known for his sitcom roles as Colonel Charles Reynolds in It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Lord Meldrum in You Rang, M'Lord? )
Russell Hunter - a massively underrated actor. Chris Ellison does a good turn too. I personally love to see Carmel in things. I also like how TV especially drama used to have room to breathe. Maybe says more about viewers though. Thank you for the uploads.
Yes, themes make for powerful storytelling. * I'm enjoying all the quirky characters, and undermining of stereotypes, and atmosphere of village / town life. * Would like to hear more about the themes ....
I've seen all of these at least once if not more and I'm planning to see them in order again now! I'm in my70's , but don't mind dramas with all the cursing and gunfights , but I never got into a lot of the most popular and long running American detective /police shows! I've loved everything from NYPD Blue, Hill St. Blues , the old and new Hawaii 5-0 and Blue Bloods just to name a very few and the Law & Order franchise is one of my all-time favorites each seen too many times to count over the years,so I enjoy a wide variety having just watched "The Mayor of Kingstown" which I have to admit was ALMOST a little too much for me at times! I get Brit Box and Acorn and love a lot of the British detective shows, but I think I've watched "Vera" the most and I don't think I've seen many guns pulled out around her! It's Sat. night and I'll get back to another episode of" Det Wexford ".
Two members of the supporting cast in this episode are particularly brilliant -. the painter Margolis, criminally minded Ruby and also Ann. Leisurely paced who-done-it, rich in characterization.
The artist was a bit overdrawn with his vague "artistic temperament. Didn't like Ann, felt she wasn't believable as a femme fatale! Really liked Ruby, very believable 👍
Just Barnaby #1 ... the "real" one ... not the one with the BORING career wife, which doesnt add anything to the series through her career and subtracts all the little "personal hobbies" which Joyce (and daughter Cully) had to hook up some stories in the episodes.
I love the Wexford mystery's and I see many of the same cast members very early on and many times thinner in this series than later in Midsomer Murders, Poirot, Marple, Coronation Street, East Enders, Death in Paradise, love it I spy with my little eye a younger hardly recognizable … fill in the cast members name... = )
Holy crap. After watching several Inspector Wexford mysteries, I am getting the message this show is about yummy men for the ladies, from Det. Drayton, Sgt. Martin, straight-laced Det. Burden, to the old suave silver fox himself, Chief Inspector Wexford. Even some of the villains are quite attractive. My oh my, there's something there for everyone of us, a smorgasbord of men.
Sgt. Martin isn't really yummy, but he's got SUCH a great sense of humour which makes him fun and attractive. My choice of all these yummy gents would definitely be Reg Wexford :-))
@@mfjdv2020 I have had some delightful daydreams about several of them because they are real men. Sorry to say, many of the young "men" of today look to be girly, with their skinny jeans barely covering their hips, their toothpick legs and their man-buns...
@@sagrammyfour I suppose it all depends on one's definition of an attractive man, eh? And I daresay all these skinny young men nowadays will eventually put on weight and fill out in middle age ... The boys of my generation all had long hair, which looks very attractive providing one has nice thick hair, and that it gets washed and brushed. Each generation has its own idiosyncrasies.
@@mfjdv2020 As far as many of the young men today, I'm afraid it's gone past just looks. Not only do they not look like a man with real testicles, they don't act like they have any. Now I said "many," not all. There is hope for the human race.
It's 2:00 am I can't sleep, thanks Paul I again thank you for this Waxford, I just noticed that Michael has solved this one, sweet as they say in Philly..or they used too...when you'd discover something that is unique and unusual.
I thought for the entire 3 hours that the cop that had to resign was the murderer because he drove away and her car at the beginning. Sniffing her jacket and making them seem very suspicious. Then they never explain that. why did he go and take the car?
At 1:09:10 Wexford says Monkey Matthews might be lonely. I don't know whether it was intentional (probably it was) but that actor was famously Lonely (the snitch) in the gritty Callan TV series starring Edward Woodward as David Callan, an agent of a state secret service dealing with internal security threats to the United Kingdom. Lonely (Monkey Matthews) was his snitch.
Steven: I advise you to watch this episode a second and even a third time. You get so much more from a 2nd / 3rd viewing. Ruth Rendell's plots tend to be extremely convoluted.

Thanks for this great inspector Wexford , I really enjoy....
Always see Emperor Tiberius taking on a detective role when I watch Inspector Wexford.
@@mfjdv2020 I Claudius. from the book by Robert Graves a BBC serial.
I, claudias one of the ultimate mini series
A must see!!!
He is much better cast as Wexford than as Tiberius!
The most steamy episode of Inspector Wexford to date!
After 33 years l am delighted finding this episode serie. It was so wonderful. All l could remember was about Kim Thompson.
@@mfjdv2020 Thank goodness someone understands us. You are exceptional
mfjdv2019 😍
" I should have the boys at the lab take a look at this." (or something similar) regarding the plate of food at the cafe. lol
Thanks for the up load Paul
Well done - a bit of a change from Inspector Morse, Midsomer Murders & Inspector Lewis
I'm really glad you like this series
Variety is the spice of life, according to the Bard.
If you're old enough to have had a VCR, I bet at the end, you were praying hard too - "Please don't break! Please don't break! I promise from now on, I'll be kind & rewind."
Paul,
Thanks very much for providing this Wexford mystery! Best wishes to you!
Are you confusing him with Donald Hewlett (was an English actor, born in Northenden, Manchester, Lancashire, and best known for his sitcom roles as Colonel Charles Reynolds in It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Lord Meldrum in You Rang, M'Lord? )
Thank you. I’ve thiroughly enjoyed watching these! I think I’ve only got one more to watch!
Seen this one before but, I forgot the twist in the end. Excellent! The sign of a good whodunnit....
Russell Hunter - a massively underrated actor. Chris Ellison does a good turn too. I personally love to see Carmel in things. I also like how TV especially drama used to have room to breathe. Maybe says more about viewers though. Thank you for the uploads.
Excellent episode with numerous but subtle underlying themes.
Yes, themes make for powerful storytelling.
*
I'm enjoying all the quirky characters, and undermining of stereotypes, and atmosphere of village / town life.
*
Would like to hear more about the themes ....
I love wexford and ruth Rendell thanks please upload more ive been binge watching all week
I wish these were uploaded LOUDER....I watch on laptop w/ speakers and its still too low to hear well? Might just be me😔
It's not just you, I struggle with it too
Only 20 videos made?
Thank you for sharing these.
God bless
Chris Ellison playing Fitzpatrick in this- played Frank Burnside ( a cop)in The Bill
The juxtaposition between the three male cop psyches, Wexford is sensible, Burton is puritanical, Drayton is sensual
Thank you for uploading
That was three.
The artist was a bit overdrawn with his vague "artistic temperament.
Didn't like Ann, felt she wasn't believable as a femme fatale! Really liked Ruby, very believable 👍
This reminded me the old joke:
"The four apostles are the following three: Peter and Paul" 😎
Just watched the first series fom South Africa. Really enjoyed and plan to watch the entire series. Thank you Paul.
This is a hoot - the actor playing Margolies enjoying every minute of his dotty character. Does it well, too.
Thanks for uploading these! Totally enjoyed this one! Honestly I thought Drayton was the killer, but I was wrong. Made it all the more interesting.
Thank you for sharing this , just brilliant Thankyou 😊👍😊
You're welcome Michelle :)
Somehow inspector Wexford and his family seem to be the predecessor of Mr. Barnaby & family. The ressmblance is striking.
Isn’t that true for most shows in the US? Most of them are rip offs of good British writing.
Just Barnaby #1 ... the "real" one ... not the one with the BORING career wife, which doesnt add anything to the series through her career and subtracts all the little "personal hobbies" which Joyce (and daughter Cully) had to hook up some stories in the episodes.
Good to see and hear the jazz background music. Well developed characters.
Nicholas Gecks plays a compelling supporting role as Ruben Margolis.. bravo! (Good Movies -group/fb)
I love sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Inspector Cribbs, and the great detective. This is really good 😊
Good quality, thanks for uploading.
Remembered when this was shown on ITV in August 1987 kicking off the whole Wexford series
Gary Bryant Yes, and this is a much better copy!
Gary: 1st episode in 1987 and the final one (no. 23 I think) in 2000. They are all absolutely brilliant, but some are more brilliant than others :-)
I love this show.. Thanks for the upload
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
We would say "sweet" the same as "cool."
Thank you Joe 😊
I thought for the entire 3 hours that the cop that had to resign was the murderer because he drove away and her car at the beginning. Sniffing her jacket and making them seem very suspicious. Then they never explain that. why did he go and take the car?
Loved Wexford and years later, still do!!!!
Me too :)
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent thoroughly enjoyable series, thank you
At 1:09:10 Wexford says Monkey Matthews might be lonely.
Thanks from Japan❣️
Wexford familyとBurden familyに映像の世界で再び出会えて、この上なく嬉しいです😂❤️
Cracking drama. Much better than America tosh.
Jolly good, what?
I'm glad you're enjoying them Laura :)
Excellent story, great series. Thanks for uploading.
thank you so muchly for sharing :)
Drayton is a good character,
With flaw....
I love all the turnings...
More actors playing too.
Music sounds very 70s or early 80s
😝
Best quality I've seen - thanks. Love a bit of Wexford...
I like the music of this show.
Very enjoyable, interesting and entertaining 👍. Thank you 🙏
So glad the ornament broke in the end. It was ugly and a safety hazard.
It did seem a tad drawn out. Who was murdered, who did the murder, and what of that woman at the very beginning with blood soaked coat?
Steven Torrey I have learned the writer for these stories can get a bit drawn out.. you wanna scream “ alight already!!!, who did the murder! “ lol
Ray was murdered. Linda did the murder and the woman with the blood soaked cat was Linda walking Ray out.
Steven: I advise you to watch this episode a second and even a third time. You get so much more from a 2nd / 3rd viewing. Ruth Rendell's plots tend to be extremely convoluted.
@@OnyaB Blood-soaked cat :-))))
i first came to enjoy George Baker when he played Tiberius in the series I Claudius -- a fine British actor
Thank you so much for this.
Lovely for once to watch a nice clean entertaining picture.Fabulous 9/10 🤗🇦🇺
