That was such a delightful video! Thank you
When I was blessed to care for my litt, little, Gabriel (a red-bellied parrot), I learned to live with broken jacket zippers and missing buttons! Oh, the mixed and funny joys of being a parrot mama 🌷🌷🌷
    Flock blessings!

I hope you can get past your parrots nipping! When you are comfortable with your parrot and you don’t feel like you’ll get bit, sometimes there’s nothing better. The bond and you can create with a parrot is just incredible, long lasting and very loving.

What lucky birds to have that kind of a setup I could probably sit out there all day with them I would never get anything done

Lol. You make me laugh. I have the same problems with my hair. It always looks disheveled from all my birds landing on my head and preening my hair 😅🤣

Seriously! It’s just crazy. Some days I feel like I look like a homeless person who can’t afford a hairbrush! And since my hair is curly, if I brush it, it just gets frizzy. The cost of having a parrot!
Hey, one of my viewers commented that he just got mountain parakeets. He’s in the UK. I’m kind of jealous because I’ve never seen them and I can’t find any for sale around me. Do you have them around you? Have you ever had one? They look gorgeous! Just curious, I love finding out about these kinds of things. I also love learning about new species that I’ve never met before.

How interesting. One of my caiques gets carried away preening and she pinches. I will gently remove her beak and gently tell her “no”. Then I refocus her attention. I’d love to say she perfect. But, being a Caique she is stubborn and persistent. That is part of what I love about her. This is also the bird that delights in rolling on to her back while in my lap and making sweet noises.☺️

I'm in a very unique situation working as a volunteer in what is essentially a small zoo in Mexico. We take in many abandoned pets, including various parrots. Our Mexican Military Macaw, as well as a couple of Amazonian parrots, have their own cages which are quite large but they don't really fly, only hop, crawl, etc. There are many staff and volunteers who feed them, bathe them, and clean their cages. Some of us are able to spend a bit more time, truly talking and/or singing to them. The macaw, in particular, will bite/nip if someone gets too close but mostly she will come up to people and stay away but, when she sticks her head through the cage inviting someone to get close, then it's more of a bite (although it may qualify as a nip, as there isn't room for a good bite in that position, lol). Anyway, my main question is how to know when it's "safe" to get close to their beak or to reach over and scratch their head? Obviously only for those of us who have become familiar to them for at least a month or more, and we have to be aware of the birds' body language, but other than that I'm not sure what else to do in this situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! Down in Mexico at a zoo! Good for you! I will make you a video helping you as best I can- I’m going through some stuff right now, so if I forget in a couple days, remind me. If I can, I’ll visit parrots I don’t know, but I might not have the time to go- it does boil down to whispering, body language and communication.

My 14 yr old BG Macaw is just the same. She is my favorite beauty shop - long blond and gray,-curly about like yours. She preens for hours. I stopped buying clothes with buttons and wearing jewelry, especially pierced earrings. I came to the conclusion that all alien "things" that are stuck to you or to your clothes needs preened off- as if they are parasites.
My 'around the house' clothes - especially tops - are all thrift so I don't have to worry about the little holes. She is good about not biting clothes now, but still. I also started early and almost instinctively to grab the beak as you do. I trained and owned horses for half my life so transitioning to a large bird wasn't hard. I think because I was used to fearlessly managing and focusing on the body language of an animal that can hurt you. Also using leverage as opposed to force. And also they are both prey animals as opposed to 'predator' animals. I've also trained many dogs, but it's a different mode of behavior. Anyway, my girl is my daily joy and I hope I am hers as well.

I’m sure you are correct Daly joy! Yes, I have given up. I feel like my ear piercings are closing up because I rarely wear anything anymore. When I think about it, I had a farm or rather where my birds than jewelry. I really enjoyed reading your post, thank you for posting. Blue and gold seem like wonderful macaws and I could see how once you know how to handle a horse, a blue and gold would be easy! Good for you what a wonderful thing. I have course, think parents are the best!
