My shifter didn't work like your video. The end of the spring on the ratchet is broken. Some Shimano products seem to have durability problems. I took out the spring, hung the unbroken side in the outer small hole, bent the other side and tucked it under the ratchet. It's working fine now. Thanks.
Had the same issue with the same xt shifter today. Only 1.5yr old. Left me 15mi out riding home single speed. Looks like I'll have to buy a replacement. Thanks for saving me some time. Have it apart on my bench trying to figure out what was wrong, and after your video I now see the same issue w the broken spring.
Mine broke today aswell - also 1.5 years old - looks new inside. I'll be contacting Shimano for a warranty claim (2 years apparently). The more I look online the more I'm discovering this is a known problem!
XT M8100 same problem at about 1500km. My shifter reliability degraded over several rides. When it became completely unreliable I tried cleaning out muck with spray solvent and lots of changing up and down. When this did not improve the situation I took the front and back covers off and saw the cable was not where I expected. In normal operation the cable passes close to the lever that fails so I speculate that it catches the spring somehow and breaks or bends it. Maybe failure caused by releasing gear cable (selecting higher gears) without wheel turning so the cable is not pulled out but instead floats into the wrong place, when tension returns it scrunches the spring? Can see the broken spring - so frustrating not being able to fix such a small piece. I'd like the tool to remove the external down lever so I could have a go at replacing the spring.
Yesterday my 2,5 year old XT shifter broke in same way. The lower end of the spring still sticks in it's hole like in your video. But on the upper end a tiny l-shaped piece broke off.
Same problem here. XT shifter broke after about 5000km in 1,5 years. Very annoying. Impossible to disassemble the assy for repair. Ended up buying a SLX shifter as a replacement.
My shifter lever the one which goes to lower gears , when I push it to change the gear it just stays where I leave it and it doesn't get back so I have to push it with my finger
2019 m9100 shifter spring issue just happened today 5 minutes into race. This is ridiculous. First a well kept m9100 brake lever diaphragm pops and is garbage and now a spring pops in the shifter and it’s toast too? What’s going on? Usually shimano is reliable. Maybe I go back to SRAM or Magura?
Did you contact the shop that sold the bike? Or is there a way to contact a different Shimano dealer? I now live in another country and not sure how to handle this...
Hey thanks for the video. I ride a Shimano XTR SL-M9100 12-speed and the trigger is such that you can push through without resistance, ie you can't shift up and this condition occurs irregularly. Is it repairable ?
Hello looks like my shifter lever (the one thats go to lower gears) its bent, but i dont see any dent or scratchs, and I think its a very difficult place to hit, beacuse the handlebar... looks like it has a little wiggle on the lever, and that silver seal it is on place without any marks of that someone tried to open it... if anyone xould help!! Thanks
Same Issue here in Germany. Thanks for the Video

Dude! Good call. Mine is still under warranty too. Didn't even think of that. Got my through REI Feb21. Hopefully they can get me a replacement quick.
Same issue on 2 x XTR shifters in the space of 2years, gave up on them and settled with a Deore which I’ve ridden since (2yrs) with no issues.

Hi, did you replay the spring in the broken Shifter? Or is that impossible to do ? I have the same issue….
I couldn't find a replacement spring and ended up replacing the entire shifter.
