    RIP Derek Prigmore who passed away today 1st september, He was a Wheel man through and through in the 60s, but had the patience to make us younger one feel good rather than a non entity in todays Twisted Wheel soul scene. I told Derek ABOUT my soul sounds, that would make a great astray said Derek lol Once Covid was over he was looking forward to coming to Princess Street , he loved the fact the place is still playing the toons and not on boots or rereleases lol He had mighty respect for Pete Roberts , whos vision has steered the club to no 1 over the past 20 years, no mean feat for any club, RIP Derek, you can sort Dave Godin out in heaven lol for getting some of your rarities released lol xxx
    I was a kid at the howard mallet, we used to wait for the pioneers to come back from their sorties on a sunday night, remember like yesterday been told about this on Fat Fish, we thought they were teasing us lol The wheel never claimed to play anything first, but it was the wheels aura that gave it to the county. We were not to know of the future...but eck for me the journey is amazing, of course the Twisted Wheel resurrected like a Phoenix in 2000, and has gone on to inspire young boppers like me, who missed the first

    Catacomb's DJ Carl Dene was responsible for 'breaking' Leon Haywood's 'Baby Reconsider' [he had the only copy in the country at that time]. But this was totally ignored until another copy was found and played at the Twisted Wheel months later. Unfairly for Carl [and the Catacombs] it then became massive and wrongly 'claimed' as a Wheel biggie!

    • @discomarathonlegend
      @discomarathonlegend 3 года назад +1

      No Billy big balls at The Twisted Wheel it was ahead of the game reference all-nighters, maybe 2 or 3 in the country? with 0 competition you dont get the lies hate, destructive comments so folks go to your do instead lol They never claimed nowt, twas the adoring fans from all over the country. the Fens even! places like Cambridges, Bedford, Norwich Peterborough, We edify the Cats on our Twisted Wheel Facebook group, as well as Pep.all the time, the history is so important to some of us.Eck the Cats all-nighter legend was to come and spawned the Casino with its amazing dancing/toons , all on another level.Both Carl and Pep are legends to me, at the very last weekender before Covid lockdown I followed Pep djing I was so in awe I insisted he did another 15 minutes, the man is class, Carl was a TW original, from 64 he encourages the TW Facebook all the time, we make sure his finds are recognised of course for them short years it was the Wheel that gave em to the country, there was no Facebook lol just word of mouth, Doris troy, the sharpers were 2 other of the massive sounds discovered by this great man, they went on to get rereleased and chart, a happening not in the thoughts, when chart music wasn't cool lol but wow yes love ya all RESPECTS XXX

      @@discomarathonlegend ....... Thanks for your comments. As a Catacombs 'regular' [started going there in 1972] it saddens me that this brilliant club always seems to be ignored whenever people talk about Northern Soul. [and especially from those that came to the 'Scene' late on and believe that Wigan was the be all and end all of the sub-culture]. If you simply consider the quality of DJ's that performed their magic at the Cats [Soul Sam, Froggy, Carl Dene, Blue Max, Pep etc] and the standard of records that were played there - often for the very first time on the 'Scene' [eg: Bob Relf, Butch Baker, Duke Browner, Jerry Williams, Alice Clark, Superlatives, Velours and Tempos etc] it's staggering that the importance of the Catacombs is so blatantly overlooked.
      My brother and I were very good friends with Nigel and Graham Gibbs - ex-Stoke inhabitants who re-located to nearby Stourbridge in the West Midlands when their father was transferred there with his job. Through our close friendship with the Gibbs we were introduced to Ian 'Pep' Pereira and began a long and equally close friendship with Ian and his lovely lady Helen. The six of us were inseparable and went everywhere together. So I know first hand the hard work and dedication Ian put into establishing himself as a 'top' DJ.
      How he had virtually his entire record collection stolen one night at the Catacombs [supposedly by a well-known Torch DJ] and had to struggle to rebuild that. Whilst Ian [who was older than my brother and I] could be 'difficult' and temperamental at times [aren't we all?] nobody should have been subjected to that crushing event. In fact, I often thought Ian was one of the unluckiest people I ever met! I remember we piled into his old Vauxhall Viva and went to the Mecca one night. Only to come out in the early hours to find that vandals had slashed all the tires!
      Of course, the tragic passing of Helen [and at such a relatively young age] is probably the ultimate setback Ian suffered. Whilst they were always a bit of an odd couple, with frequent 'spats' and arguments - there is no doubt they were madly in love with each other. Helen was utterly unique and great fun - often 'other-worldly' with her laid back demeanor and 'floater' dance style, she was Ian's 'rock' and supported his passion for Soul music completely. She is greatly missed.
      Your eulogy of Ian [Pep] is utterly deserved. He influenced myself and my brother profoundly. [when we started DJ'ing I even used to mimic him on the mic!] We often exchanged records with Ian and brought some of our 'finds' to his attention. Likewise, Ian would share his latest 'biggies' with us and we would be with him when he played them for the first time. [I will always remember his unbridled excitement over 'breaking' Joey Dee's 'It' Got You!] It's so good to see that his love of Soul music has never diminished [like mine and my brother's] and that others recognise the contribution he made.
